NFL Injury Report Terms Explained: Full, Limited and Did Not Practice

NFL practice labels measure completed repetitions, not game availability. Here’s how full, limited and did not participate differ from game status.

On an NFL injury report, “did not participate,” “limited participation” and “full participation” describe how much of a player’s normal practice work he completed—not whether he will play in the next game. The NFL defines them as zero percent, less than 100 percent and 100 percent of normal repetitions, respectively. Game availability is reported separately.

What do the three practice participation labels mean?

The NFL measures participation against a player’s normal repetitions, including both individual drills and the team portion of practice. The labels do not specify a universal number of snaps or minutes.

Practice designation Share of normal repetitions What it tells you
Did Not Participate (DNP) 0 percent The player completed none of his normal repetitions. The label does not, by itself, establish whether he was physically absent from every team activity.
Limited Participation Less than 100 percent The player took part in some, but not all, of his normal practice work. For example, doing individual drills but not the team portion still counts as limited.
Full Participation 100 percent The player completed all of his normal repetitions. This describes practice participation, not a guarantee he will play.

These definitions come from the NFL’s injury-reporting policy, which states that normal repetitions include individual drills and the team portion of practice.

Does full participation mean a player will play?

No. Full participation means the player completed 100 percent of his normal repetitions at that practice. It is not a game-availability designation. The NFL’s Week 4, 2026 injury report illustrates that the fields can differ: a player may be listed as full for practice and Questionable for the game.

The Dime Lab Football Playbook - Coaching Notebook, 50 Double-Sided Pages
  • Quarterback Design: Designed by an NFL Quarterback Kurt Benkert, using insights from his professional football preparation and film study. This notebook will help you design plays that can be easily understood and executed on the field.
  • 50 Double-Sided Play Design Pages: The playbook is designed with plenty of room to sketch formations, routes, coverages, and game plans.
  • Premium Hard Cover: The notebook's durable construction is built to hold up through practices, meetings, and travel. Unlike paperback playbooks, this notebook will help coaches and players all season long.
  • Tear-Out Pages: The pages are designed to be ripped out for easy sharing with players and other coaches. Bring your play designs to the field or film room.
  • Players and Coaching Staff: The playbook is a perfect fit for coaches, QBs & football fans. From Pop Warner and flag football to high school and weekend leagues, the playbook can help with strategy building, quarterback training, film study, or designing your own team's playbook.

Likewise, limited participation does not mean a player is certain to miss the game, and did not participate does not alone establish his final availability. The participation label is a record of that practice report; it is not a standalone forecast of Sunday’s decision.

How are practice status and game status different?

Practice participation reports how much of a player’s normal work he completed. The separate game-status designation describes his expected availability for the game:

  • Out: will not play.

Those meanings are distinct from the practice labels. The NFL announced in 2016 that it removed “Probable” from its game-status categories. In that announcement, the league said approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years played; that was a historical figure cited in 2016, not a current-season rate. Why does “normal repetitions” matter?

A player’s participation is judged against the work normal for his role, not simply by whether he appeared at practice or took part in some activity. The NFL reported that Baltimore initially listed Lamar Jackson as full, then corrected the report to limited after considering that he practiced with the scout team rather than taking starter repetitions. The league reported fining the club $100,000 for the policy violation. That case illustrates the normal-repetitions standard; it is not a standard penalty for every reporting error. Read the NFL’s account of the correction.

How to read an injury report

  1. Read the practice designation literally. DNP is zero percent of normal repetitions, limited is less than 100 percent, and full is 100 percent.
  2. Check the game-status field separately. Use Questionable, Doubtful or Out to understand the listed game designation rather than treating a practice label as a substitute.
  3. Note when the report was issued. A practice entry describes that report, while a later report may show a different participation or game status.

The NFL’s definitions establish how participation categories are assigned; they do not provide a validated probability of playing for each practice label. Avoid turning “limited” into a fixed number of repetitions, or assigning an exact chance of playing from practice status alone.
