Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If NFC is missing or will not turn on, your phone cannot read tags, or Google Wallet tap to pay fails, treat those as different problems. Start with the exact phone’s official LineageOS device page and its firmware requirements; then test tag reading separately from payment eligibility. A Wallet rejection alone does not show that the NFC hardware is broken.
First identify what “NFC not working” means
Before changing settings or flashing anything, note which outcome you see. The distinction determines which checks are relevant.

- NFC is missing from Settings or will not turn on: investigate device support, the installed build, and model-specific prerequisites.
- NFC turns on, but the phone does not read a known tag or respond to a reader: investigate general NFC operation.
- Tags work, but Google Wallet tap to pay does not: check Wallet setup and security eligibility; this is not the same as a tag-reading failure.
- Card emulation fails only with the screen off or locked: check the Android version and Secure NFC behavior, which can affect host-based card emulation.
Write down the exact phone model, LineageOS build and date, whether the issue began after installation or an update, and whether NFC worked on that phone with its stock operating system. These details are essential before attempting a device-specific fix.
Check the exact phone’s LineageOS support and prerequisites
Open the official LineageOS device page for your exact model and follow its installation instructions and known-issues notes. Confirm any required stock firmware version or other prerequisites. Requirements differ by device, so do not use firmware intended for another model. LineageOS warns that missing required firmware can cause installation failure or unexpected crashes, and that installation mistakes can cause permanent damage. See the device-specific LineageOS installation instructions for hotdogb as an example of how such requirements are documented; it is not a guide for other phones.

- NFC Forum-certified PC-linked reader/writer
- NFC Support: NFC Reader/Writer Mode, Peer-to-Peer Mode, Card Emulation Mode
- Supports ISO 14443, MIFARE, FeliCa, and all 4 types of NFC (ISO/IEC 18092) tags
LineageOS’s device support requirements state: “All devices with NFC supported in their stock OS MUST support NFC.” The charter also directs maintainers to report hardware deviations on the device wiki. This is a project support requirement, not proof that every unofficial build, firmware combination, or individual phone is working correctly. Read the LineageOS device support requirements for context.
Some device builds also depend on proprietary components. The official LineageOS build page for beyond2lte, for example, documents extracting proprietary blobs. That example supports checking your own model’s official build or installation requirements; it does not establish that a missing blob is the cause of your NFC problem.

Test tag reading separately from contactless payment
With NFC enabled, test a known NFC tag or reader before troubleshooting a wallet. If the phone detects tags but payment fails, basic NFC operation is working at least for that test; concentrate on payment setup and eligibility instead of assuming an antenna fault.

Consequently, toggling NFC, reinstalling Wallet, or trying to hide root is not a guaranteed way to restore payment support. Check Google’s current Google Pay guidance for tap-to-pay transaction issues before changing the phone’s software state.

For a payment-only failure, check the basics
Google Wallet’s troubleshooting guidance includes these checks:
- Confirm that the phone supports NFC and that NFC is enabled.
- Check that the intended app is selected as the default payment app.
- Confirm that a payment card is set up.
- Make sure a screen lock is configured and the phone meets the service’s current security and device-certification requirements.
- Unlock the phone before attempting a payment, if required by the device or payment flow.
Use Google’s Google Wallet tap-to-pay troubleshooting steps for the current instructions. Passing basic setup checks does not override the service’s security eligibility rules for a modified device.

Check screen state only for card-emulation symptoms
Host-based card emulation (HCE) is a specific way an Android device can present a card-like service to a reader. Android documents that screen state and Secure NFC settings can affect whether HCE operates while the display is off or the device is locked. If the failure depends on those conditions, check the relevant Android version and Secure NFC configuration using the Android HCE overview.
This branch applies to screen-state-dependent HCE behavior. It does not explain why NFC is absent from Settings or why the phone cannot detect ordinary tags.

If NFC still fails, gather device-specific details before escalating
If NFC is absent, refuses to enable, or detects no known tag after you have confirmed the exact model’s official requirements, report the issue through the device-specific support channel with useful diagnostic context.
- Exact phone model and whether the build is official or unofficial.
- LineageOS version, build date, and when the symptom began.
- The required or installed firmware baseline, if the device instructions specify one.
- What you tested: a known tag or reader, whether NFC could be toggled, and whether the phone worked on stock software.
- Relevant logs requested by the device-specific support channel.
Do not flash a package for another model or replace an NFC antenna based only on a payment failure. Without the phone model and a diagnosis, there is no universal reset, firmware flash, or hardware repair that can safely be prescribed.
