Neither Nexus Mods nor ModDB is the best choice for every game or mod. Start by searching for the exact mod you want on both sites, then choose based on where its current files are hosted and how you want to install them. Nexus Mods has a documented integration with its Vortex manager and Collections; ModDB organizes a broader mix of mods, games, news, files, and downloads.

Which site should you use?
Choose Nexus Mods first if you want Vortex or a Collection
If the mod you need is available on Nexus and you want a manager-supported install, Vortex is the clearest reason to start there. Nexus documents Vortex support across more than 500 games and offers Collections as a way to install a referenced set of mods through the manager. A Collection does not itself bundle the mod files, so check its linked requirements and resources.

Search ModDB when you are exploring a project or its community
ModDB’s sections span mods, games, news, files, and downloads. That layout can be useful when you are looking beyond a single download—for example, to find a game’s project page or related community updates. Its structure alone does not establish that it has more mods for a particular game.

Check both for older games or large community projects
For an older game, a total-conversion project, or a mod whose current official files are unclear, search both platforms and follow the project’s own maintained page or instructions. This is a practical way to find the right source, not evidence that one site is universally more complete.
How to check a mod before downloading
- Confirm the exact game and version. Read the mod page for supported game editions, updates, and any compatibility notes.
- Check prerequisites. Look for required frameworks, other mods, or installation tools, and verify that their versions match.
- Read the install instructions and file details. Make sure you know which file to download and whether installation is through Vortex, another tool, or manual steps.
- Review the author’s history and support information. Look for recent updates, change notes, and author-maintained answers to reported problems.
- Use the platform’s stated process, but do not treat hosting as approval. Nexus explicitly says a file’s presence does not by itself mean it complies with site rules or has been approved. Its Moderation Policy explains that qualification.
These checks help you assess whether a file fits your setup; they do not amount to a comparative security ranking of the two sites.

The figures and feature descriptions come from the platforms’ own pages, not independent audits or hands-on comparisons. They do not establish which site has the strongest catalog for a specific game, faster downloads, fewer malicious files, better uptime, or better customer support. Features, catalog counts, policies, and membership terms can change, so verify the live page for the game and file you plan to use.
