Keep the instance in maintenance mode while you identify the failed stage, make a complete backup, verify that the target release is supported, and then repair only the reported cause. If code replacement finished but migration did not, run occ upgrade manually as the web-server account and use the exact exception in the Nextcloud log to guide the repair.

Start by identifying where the updater stopped
Do not begin by repeatedly clicking “retry” or switching maintenance mode off. Nextcloud’s updater performs several distinct operations, and an error in one phase requires a different recovery path from an error in another. Save the complete updater message, any command output, and the corresponding entries from the Nextcloud log before changing files or database settings.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Failure stage | Typical evidence | What is affected | First response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release and requirement checks | The target version is not offered, the upgrade path is rejected, or a required PHP, database, extension, or operating-system condition is missing. | No production code should have been replaced yet. | Check the target release’s supported upgrade path and system requirements before retrying. |
| File and permission checks | The updater reports that files are not writable, ownership is wrong, or expected files are missing or modified. | Installation files cannot be safely changed or do not match the expected release. | Correct ownership and permissions, then restore or replace the specifically identified files. |
| Updater backup | The internal code backup cannot be created or stored. | The updater’s rollback snapshot is incomplete or unavailable. | Check storage and permissions, and create your own full backup before another attempt. |
| Code replacement | Extraction, copying, or replacement of the new Nextcloud files fails. | The code tree may contain a mixture of old and new files. | Do not delete files at random; follow the supported manual-upgrade procedure for the identified path. |
| Database or app migration | The updater reaches migration, then displays an exception or exits during schema or app updates. | Code may be updated while the database schema or enabled apps are not fully migrated. | Read the Nextcloud log, correct the named migration or app problem, and run occ upgrade again. |
The stage matters because a migration error is not fixed by changing file permissions, while a non-writable installation should not be “repaired” by running database commands. Treat the updater message as a boundary: investigate the operation it names and avoid unrelated changes.
Protect the installation before making another change
Nextcloud recommends maintaining regular backups and making a fresh backup before every upgrade. A failed update is exactly when that discipline matters most. The updater’s own code snapshot is supplemental: it does not include the data directory or database, so it is not a complete restore point.

What a usable pre-retry backup contains
- Database: Capture the complete Nextcloud database, including schema, records, and permissions, using the backup method appropriate to your database server.
- Data directory: Preserve users’ files, file versions, trash, and other data stored outside the application code.
config.php: Keep the instance configuration, database connection details, trusted domains, salts, and data-directory location secure.- Application code and custom changes: Retain the current code tree and document any manually edited files or deployment-specific changes.
- Backup verification: Confirm that the backup completed and can be read. A job that reported success but produced an incomplete database or inaccessible files is not a recovery plan.
Store the backup on a separate device or location from the server. An external hard drive or SSD can provide a practical destination, provided it is protected from accidental deletion and has enough capacity for the database and data directory. Do not overwrite your last known-good backup until the new copy has been checked.
Why the updater backup is not enough
The updater creates an internal code backup under its updater backup path. That snapshot is designed to help with the code portion of the operation; it does not contain the data directory or database. If the migration changed the database, or if users’ files are damaged, the internal code copy alone cannot restore the service. Keep it as an additional safety net rather than treating it as your only backup.

Check whether the upgrade path is supported
Major Nextcloud releases have version-specific system requirements and supported upgrade sequences. A direct jump that appears convenient may be unsupported even when the server has enough disk space. Before retrying, identify the currently installed version, the exact target version, and the deployment method: package, container, Snap, or a manually managed installation.
Questions to answer before a major-version upgrade
- Is the current version allowed to upgrade directly to the target, or must one or more intermediate major releases be installed first?
- Does the target release support the installed PHP version, database engine and version, required PHP extensions, web server, and operating system?
- Does the deployment method impose its own upgrade sequence or immutable paths?
- Are there enough free resources for the new code, the updater backup, temporary extraction files, and database migration work?
- Have you read the target release’s upgrade notes for removed, renamed, or incompatible apps?
If the supported path requires intermediate releases, restore the backup or return to the known-good state and proceed one supported step at a time. Do not force a skipped major version by replacing files manually; an apparently successful code copy can leave an unsupported database state that is harder to recover.
Fix “files are not writable” and permission failures
The updater checks that every path it must modify is writable. A failure normally indicates a mismatch between the web-server account, file ownership, directory permissions, or the way the installation was copied. The exact path in the error is more useful than a blanket permission change.

Trace the account and paths
- Record the path named by the updater and determine which account runs PHP for your deployment. On a typical Ubuntu installation this is often
www-data, but use the account configured on your server. - Check ownership and permissions on the Nextcloud code directory, its subdirectories, and any updater or temporary path named in the error.
- Look for read-only mounts, filesystem quota exhaustion, access-control rules, or container volume mounts that override ordinary Unix permissions.
- Correct only the affected ownership or permission boundary, then rerun the updater’s prerequisite check.
A web-server process needs to write the paths that the updater replaces, while your administrative account still needs a secure way to perform backups and maintenance. Avoid making the entire server or every file world-writable: that hides the ownership problem and creates a security risk. Package, container, Snap, and manual installations may expose different paths and accounts, so apply the fix within the deployment’s documented model.

Handle unexpected or modified files safely
Nextcloud checks for expected files because leftover files, altered core files, or files from another release can interfere with replacement. The updater should identify the path that differs. Treat that path as evidence, not as an invitation to delete everything in the directory.
When a core file was changed
- Determine whether the change was an intentional local customization, a stale file from an older release, or an accidental edit.
- If it is a core file that should match the installed release, restore the expected version from the matching release package or use the documented manual-upgrade process.
- If the file belongs to an app or a deployment overlay, check that component’s compatibility before replacing it.
- Keep a copy of intentional customizations outside the code tree and document how they will be reapplied after the upgrade.
Never remove unidentified files merely to make the check pass. Deleting a configuration, app, or data-related path can turn a recoverable updater warning into data loss. If the updater cannot safely reconcile the tree, stop and use the supported manual procedure after taking the complete backup described above.
Recover from an updater backup-stage failure
A backup-stage error means the updater could not create or retain its temporary code snapshot. Common causes include a full filesystem, an unwritable updater directory, insufficient quota, or a path that is unavailable inside a container or restricted package environment. The message should tell you which location failed.
- Check free space and inode availability on the filesystem that holds the Nextcloud code and updater backup path.
- Verify that the process running the updater can create, read, and remove files in that path.
- Check whether a stale or partial updater backup is consuming space or blocking a new snapshot; preserve it until you know it is safe to remove.
- Create and verify the independent database, data-directory, and configuration backup before another attempt.
- Retry only after the updater can complete its own code snapshot.
The updater’s internal backup cannot replace your full backup. If the backup stage repeatedly fails in the current deployment method, use the supported manual upgrade route for that method rather than bypassing the safety check without a restore point.

Review and disable incompatible third-party apps
Third-party apps can fail during a core upgrade even when Nextcloud itself is healthy. Before upgrading, review every non-core app for compatibility with the target release and disable apps that are unsupported or known to conflict. This reduces the migration surface and prevents an app’s schema or code from stopping the core migration.
App review checklist
- Separate built-in or officially maintained apps from third-party apps.
- Check each third-party app’s compatibility with the exact target Nextcloud release, not merely with the current release.
- Disable incompatible apps before replacing core code.
- After the core upgrade and migrations complete, re-enable only apps confirmed to work with the new release.
- If an app caused the exception, leave it disabled while you complete the core migration and decide whether to update, replace, or remove it.
Do not re-enable every disabled app immediately after a partial upgrade. Restore them in a controlled order and review the log after each group, so a new failure can be attributed to a specific app.
Run the database and app migration with occ upgrade
The migration phase updates the database schema and upgrades apps. Nextcloud documents that occ upgrade runs only this migration phase; it does not replace the code. That distinction is important when code replacement completed but the web updater stopped before migration.
When to run it manually
Run the command manually when the updater indicates that the new code is in place but the migration prompt was skipped, timed out, or failed before completion. Use the actual installation path and the account that runs the web server. On a typical Ubuntu installation, the command is:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ upgrade
Execute it from the Nextcloud installation directory, or invoke the correct path to occ for your deployment. Replace www-data with the configured web-server account; do not assume that account applies to a package, container, Snap, or hosted arrangement.

Use the exception as the diagnostic key
- Run the migration once and capture the complete terminal output.
- Open the Nextcloud log and locate entries at the same time as the failure.
- Identify the exact exception, database table or column, app name, and operation named by the log.
- Correct that specific cause—for example, an incompatible app, missing database capability, or prerequisite problem—without making unrelated schema edits.
- Run
occ upgradeagain and confirm that it reaches completion.
The log is the authority for migration exceptions. A generic browser message such as “Internal Server Error” is not enough to choose a repair. Some long-running database changes, including adding missing columns, indexes, or primary keys, can be run separately after the upgrade when Nextcloud indicates that this is appropriate. Do not interrupt such work merely because it takes longer than an ordinary request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand and clear maintenance mode safely
Maintenance mode is a safety state, not proof that the update succeeded. The updater enables it while changing code and running migrations. Nextcloud documents that it can remain enabled when code replacement or occ upgrade fails, which prevents users from writing to an instance whose code and database may be out of sync.
Keep maintenance mode enabled while the upgrade is incomplete
Leave the instance unavailable to normal users until you know whether code replacement and database migrations finished. Turning maintenance mode off too early can expose a mixed installation and create new writes against an unfinished schema. Continue investigating with administrative access and your verified backup.

Enable it explicitly when needed
On a typical Ubuntu installation, Nextcloud documents this command:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --on
Use the actual web-server account and installation path for your server. This command changes only the maintenance state; it does not repair files or migrate the database.

Return to normal service only after verification
After the underlying error is fixed and migrations complete, use the documented maintenance command for your release to disable maintenance mode. Then verify the reported Nextcloud version, inspect the log for new errors, test an administrative login and a representative file operation, and re-enable only compatible third-party apps. If you cannot establish that code and database states match, keep maintenance mode on and restore the known-good backup or obtain deployment-specific migration assistance.
Choose the recovery route by failure stage
| Route | Best fit | Changes made | Reversibility and backup coverage | Access and downtime considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fix prerequisites, then rerun updater | Unsupported path, missing requirement, permissions, expected-file, or updater-backup error. | Corrects environment, ownership, storage, or code-tree issues; does not intentionally alter the database. | Highly reversible when a full backup exists; the updater’s code snapshot remains supplemental. | Requires filesystem and service administration; maintenance mode may remain enabled during the retry. |
| Manual code upgrade | Code replacement cannot complete through the web updater but the supported manual procedure applies. | Replaces application code according to the deployment method; migration still has to be run. | Requires a complete database, data, and configuration backup before changing code. | Needs deployment-appropriate administrative access and downtime while files and migrations are handled. |
Run occ upgrade |
New code is present and the failure is in database or app migration. | Changes database schema and app state; it does not install new core code. | Database changes may require restoring the pre-upgrade database and code together if recovery is necessary. | Run as the web-server account with maintenance mode enabled until completion. |
| Restore and retry along a supported path | The release jump is unsupported, the database is inconsistent, or the code tree cannot be trusted. | Returns code, database, data, and configuration to a known-good point. | Most reversible, provided the backup is complete and verified. | Requires sufficient downtime and tested restore access; deployment method must match the backup. |
Package, container, Snap, and manual installations differ in how code, volumes, services, and permissions are managed. Select the route that matches your deployment rather than copying commands from another installation type.

Nextcloud documents the repair command family, but repair actions should be chosen for the error actually recorded in the log. On a typical Ubuntu installation, the command entry point is:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:repair
Use the repair action appropriate to the logged issue and the version’s documentation. Do not run broad, speculative repairs as a substitute for identifying the failed migration. A repair command cannot correct an unsupported release path, a non-writable filesystem, or a missing full backup.
Validate a successful update
- Confirm that the instance reports the intended Nextcloud version, not merely that the updater page disappeared.
- Review the Nextcloud log after migration and after the first normal requests.
- Verify that maintenance mode is off only after code and database migrations are complete.
- Test login, file listing, upload, download, sharing, and any critical integration used by your users.
- Re-enable compatible third-party apps deliberately and watch the log for app-specific exceptions.
- Keep the pre-upgrade backup until the upgraded instance has operated normally long enough to establish confidence.
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Blind retries: Repeating the same failed operation can leave more partial files or repeated migration attempts without addressing the cause.
- Disabling maintenance mode immediately: This can expose an installation whose code and database versions do not match.
- Deleting unexpected files: The named path may be a needed configuration or app file, not harmless debris.
- Using only the updater snapshot: Without the database and data directory, you cannot perform a complete restore.
- Skipping major releases: An unsupported jump can produce a database state that the target release never expected.
- Running commands as the wrong account: A root-owned migration can create new ownership problems for web requests, while an unprivileged account may lack required access.
- Re-enabling all apps at once: This obscures which app introduces a post-upgrade failure.
When to involve a specialist
Escalate to an administrator experienced with Nextcloud when the backup cannot be verified, the database migration fails repeatedly with a persistent exception, the code tree contains extensive local modifications, or the supported release path conflicts with your deployment constraints. Managed Nextcloud hosting or migration assistance can be appropriate when permissions, system requirements, database operations, or backup restoration exceed your team’s operational access. Keep maintenance mode enabled and preserve logs and backups so the specialist can work from evidence rather than a changing installation.
