A path missing from a build’s prerendered output is not necessarily an unavailable route. In Next.js App Router, generateStaticParams supplies dynamic route values to prerender during next build; whether paths it omits can still be served depends in part on dynamicParams and the application’s output mode. The reported 1,200-page incident cannot be independently diagnosed without its code, Next.js version, and build output, so the useful first step is to separate “not prerendered” from “not reachable.”
What “ignored” can mean in the App Router
A dynamic route uses bracketed folders, for example app/blog/[slug]/page.tsx. The segment name, slug, is the key that generateStaticParams must return for that route. Next.js documents the function as a way to statically generate routes at build time; the values it supplies determine which paths are candidates for build-time prerendering.

Those generated paths and the set of paths the app can serve are not always identical. A path omitted from the generated list may still be handled on demand when dynamicParams is enabled. With dynamicParams = false, an ungenerated dynamic path returns 404. The version 15 route-segment documentation describes this setting; check the reference for the exact Next.js version in use before relying on version-specific behavior.
| Case | Build-time result | Request for an omitted path | Should unlisted paths be accepted? |
|---|---|---|---|
Path returned by generateStaticParams |
Supplied for build-time prerendering | Its behavior after the build depends on the route and output configuration | It is explicitly listed for generation |
Path omitted; dynamicParams is true |
Not supplied by the function for build-time prerendering | May be rendered on demand | Yes, according to the documented dynamic-parameter behavior |
Path omitted; dynamicParams is false |
Not supplied by the function for build-time prerendering | Returns 404 | No |
For the details of the function’s return value and build/runtime distinction, see the Next.js generateStaticParams reference, the dynamic-segment guide, and, for Next.js 15 specifically, the dynamicParams route-segment reference.

Check the generated parameters against the route
The function returns an array of objects. Each object’s keys must match the dynamic segment names, and its values fill those segments. For app/blog/[slug]/page.tsx, a returned object needs a slug property. If the route is app/shop/[category]/[item]/page.tsx, the relevant values must correspond to category and item.
Catch-all segments use arrays of path parts rather than a single string. Compare the actual route folders with the object shape and catch-all form in the official API examples. A mismatch between a segment name and a returned key is a concrete issue to investigate; the incident details available here do not establish that this was the cause of the reported pages.

Trace where nested route values are generated
With multiple dynamic segments, identify which function supplies each segment’s values. A parent layout or page can generate parameters at its own level; child generation runs in relation to the parent parameter sets. A parent-level list alone should not be assumed to provide every combination needed by a deeper route.

Verify what the function actually returns during the build
Next.js says, “During next build, generateStaticParams runs before the corresponding Layouts or Pages are generated.” That timing makes the function’s build-time inputs important: inspect the data source and the values available in the build environment rather than assuming the deployed list matches a local or runtime list.
- Record the exact Next.js version and whether Cache Components or
output: 'export'is enabled. - During the build, inspect or log the number of returned objects and representative values. Check the project’s pagination, filters, and build-time environment data.
- Compare the returned objects to the expected slugs or IDs, including their exact spelling and segment keys.
- If incremental static regeneration is involved, do not expect revalidation to rerun
generateStaticParams; the function is not called again during ISR revalidation.
These checks can reveal whether the build input itself is incomplete, but none can be identified as the explanation for the 1,200-page report without its source code and build evidence.

Read the build output for the configured output mode
Next.js build output distinguishes App pages, App routes, prerenders, and static files. The category that matters depends on the application’s output mode. In particular, when static export is enabled, the official output-types documentation says the route arrays are empty while the staticFiles category is populated. An empty route category in that mode is not, by itself, proof that the pages were omitted.
Inspect the build summary and output artifacts appropriate to the project’s configuration, then compare them with the expected URLs. The Next.js output-types documentation describes the categories and the static-export distinction.

Check the Cache Components exception
When Cache Components are enabled, generateStaticParams cannot return an empty array: build-time validation requires sample parameters. If the function returns no values, check the specific Next.js empty-generateStaticParams guidance rather than assuming that an empty list has the same meaning in every configuration.
