If you want active games at home without a Nex Playground, the best-supported mainstream alternative is a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 with movement or fitness games. It uses a different setup: many games rely on motion controllers or game-specific accessories, rather than Nex’s camera-based, controller-free tracking. If you already have a compatible phone, Nex Active Arcade is another lower-equipment option; Xbox Kinect is best treated as used legacy hardware that needs careful compatibility checks.
What is similar to Nex Playground?
Nex Playground is a useful benchmark, not an alternative: Nex describes it as an HDMI-connected system with a wide-angle camera and AI-powered motion engine that tracks natural gestures without gameplay controllers. Its official US page listed the system at $299 when checked. The box contents included a magnetic privacy cover, navigation remote, power and HDMI cables, and a five-game starter pack: Fruit Ninja, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, Party Fowl, Go Keeper, and Starri. The starter pack does not require Play Pass. Nex lists Play Pass separately as an optional way to access a larger catalog; its FAQ listed 60+ games, $89 for 12 months, or $49 for three months at the time checked. These are vendor-listed prices and catalog figures that may change, not a like-for-like comparison with other systems.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: the clearest console alternative
Nintendo maintains an official US category for fitness games on Switch 2 and Switch, making these consoles the strongest mainstream console path supported by the available product information. Check the specific game’s requirements: motion controls and accessories vary by title, so this will not necessarily feel like Nex’s controller-free camera tracking. #1 Best Overall
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Nintendo advises players to allow adequate room and wear wrist straps. It also says a leg strap is required for some soccer gameplay. Follow the instructions for the game and accessories you choose rather than assuming every active game has the same setup.
If you already own a Switch or Switch 2, it may be a convenient route because the console is already in the home; that does not establish that it will cost less overall. A fair price comparison would need current prices for the console, games, accessories, and any subscriptions, which are not settled by the product information here.

Nex Active Arcade: try movement games with a phone

It may suit a household that already has a compatible phone and wants to try movement games without buying a dedicated console. Nex Active Arcade
Do not assume it is a TV replacement. The available product information does not establish a universal phone-to-TV casting method or device support. Check whether your specific phone and display setup can show the game on the television before choosing it for shared living-room play.

Xbox Kinect: only consider a verified used setup
Kinect remains a familiar comparison for camera-based motion games, but it is legacy hardware rather than a clearly supported current alternative. Compatibility can depend on the exact Xbox console, Kinect sensor, game, and required connection hardware. Confirm those pieces work together before purchasing used equipment; the available information does not establish current official support across setups.

Check the play area and ages
Nex recommends a play area of about 6 ft by 6 ft and recommends Playground for ages 5 and up. For children ages 3–4, Nex says a grown-up or older sibling can help them enjoy more of the games. Nintendo’s guidance is to allow adequate room around players and use wrist straps; do not assume its games have the same space requirements as Nex.

Consider camera privacy
Nex says motion tracking happens locally on the device and video data is not processed in the cloud. Its FAQ also says some games temporarily capture video for local replay and that these clips are not saved. These are Nex’s statements about Playground; they should not be treated as claims about Kinect, phones, or other camera-based systems.
Compare the real cost and game access
Nex’s checked US listing showed $299 for Playground, with Play Pass listed separately at $89 per year or $49 per three months. Those prices may change. For Switch, Switch 2, Active Arcade, or used Kinect, current total costs depend on the hardware, individual games, accessories, subscriptions, and compatibility needs; the sources here do not provide enough live pricing to establish a complete cost ranking.
Can you play active games at home without buying Nex Playground?
Yes. Choose a Switch or Switch 2 if you want a mainstream console with an official fitness-game category and are comfortable with game-dependent motion controls and accessories. Try Active Arcade if you have a compatible phone and can confirm how you want to display it. Consider Kinect only if you can verify the exact used hardware-and-game combination. None of these options has an established, directly comparable health or fitness outcome in the information cited here.
