If the .com version of your preferred name is available and the full address feels clear, .com is a practical default for a broad audience. Choose a newer domain ending when it makes the complete address more distinctive or meaningful to the people you want to reach—not because you expect it to improve Google rankings. There is no universal winner: compare the actual name, ending, audience, and current registration terms.
What is the difference between .com and a new top-level domain?
A top-level domain (TLD) is the part of a web address after the final dot: in example.com, that is .com. A generic top-level domain (gTLD) is a category that includes familiar endings and newer ones. The choice discussed here is which domain name to register for a site or organization.

That is different from applying to operate a TLD registry—the organization responsible for an entire domain ending. Registry operation involves a separate ICANN process, agreements, and technical, staffing, and financial responsibilities. ICANN’s 2026 announcement describes the registry-operator program; its application preparation checklist is not a checklist for someone registering an ordinary domain.
How should you choose between .com and a newer ending?
Judge the complete address, not the extension in isolation. Check whether the name is available, whether the ending supports the brand or explains the project, and whether your intended audience can recognize, remember, and type the whole address. These are practical decision tests, not factors with a proven universal numerical weighting.

| Decision | When it may make sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Choose .com | The exact name is available, reads naturally, and works for a broad audience. | Confirm the complete address is easy to say, spell, and use consistently. |
| Choose a newer gTLD | The ending makes the address clearer or more closely connected to the brand, audience, place, or project. | Ask whether your intended visitors understand and remember the whole address, rather than relying on the ending alone to convey credibility. |
| Rework the name | The .com version is unavailable and alternatives make the name confusing or awkward. | Compare a relevant available ending with a clear variation of the name; do not assume either option is automatically better. |
Availability is live, and registrar prices and terms can change. Before registering, compare the current registration and renewal cost, privacy options, transfer terms, and DNS controls at the registrar you plan to use. No current registrar price comparison is established here.
Does a domain extension affect Google rankings?
The available Google source does not establish that a newer TLD improves rankings or that .com receives a ranking advantage. Google’s site-name guidance, last updated 10 December 2025, explains how a site name may appear in Search and what site owners can provide; it is not a comparison of ranking performance by domain extension. Do not treat a possible branding or search-result presentation benefit as proof of an SEO ranking effect.

An ICANN survey published in 2025 reported that 44% of more than 2,000 marketing leaders across Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, the U.K., and the U.S. named improved SEO as a potential benefit of gTLDs. That figure records marketer perceptions, not a measured ranking effect or a consumer preference. ICANN’s survey release also says that after gTLDs were defined, 92% of respondents saw potential benefits; 46% cited differentiation, 45% customer trust, and 44% control over online presence. These responses do not prove that consumers trust or remember one ending more than another.

What if the .com name is already taken?
First decide whether the exact name is important enough to keep, and whether the available .com address would require a confusing compromise. Then compare relevant extensions and name variations using the same tests: does the full address fit the brand, make sense to the intended audience, and remain straightforward to communicate?

A newer ending can be a reasonable alternative if it strengthens the complete address. But an extension alone cannot guarantee trust or recognition, and the reviewed evidence does not establish a universal consumer preference for .com or for newer endings. Check the exact name and current terms before making a decision.
Are new gTLDs trustworthy and easy to remember?
The evidence reviewed does not establish a universal trust or recall ranking by extension. An ending may help signal what an organization does or who a site is for, but whether that helps depends on the audience and the name. Test the full address with people similar to your intended visitors: can they understand it, remember it after hearing it, and type it without explanation? Treat the result as feedback about your audience, not a general rule about all gTLDs.

Who can apply to operate a new TLD?
Operating an entire TLD is a registry undertaking, not another way for a typical business to register its website name. ICANN’s 2026 application window ran from 30 April through 12 August 2026 and has closed. The preparation checklist describes requirements including an eligible legal entity, a proposed string and application type, consideration of blocked or reserved names and name collisions, technical, operational, and financial materials, and preparation for possible contention. Consult ICANN’s announcement and the checklist for current program information; the closed dates do not affect ordinary domain registration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesICANN’s archived overview, marked copyright 2015, describes potential registry benefits such as control over registration rules and branding, alongside investment, technical staffing, contractual duties, and competition. It is useful for understanding the difference between operating a registry and buying a domain, not for current fees or application requirements.
