New observations from NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite show that some river models struggle to represent real river behavior—especially in heavily developed, multichannel, arid and Arctic regions. The findings do not mean river models are universally wrong: performance varies sharply by location, and the study maps where models agree with observed dynamics and where they need improvement.
What the study measured
In “SWOT, Empiricism, and River Modeling,” published online August 24, 2026, in Geophysical Research Letters, Colin J. Gleason and co-authors compared SWOT observations with ensembles of river models. Their analysis covered 68,347 river reaches, representing approximately 38% of global discharge. The paper is available at Geophysical Research Letters.

SWOT launched in December 2022. Its radar interferometry measures water-surface elevation and extent; NASA describes the mission as observing major lakes, rivers and wetlands. That combination gives researchers a broad observational basis for examining river dynamics across many regions, rather than relying only on local gauges. See NASA Goddard’s SWOT mission description.

This tests whether observed and modeled changes move consistently. It is not a verification of every modeled discharge value, nor a single score declaring a model good or bad everywhere. The analysis also accounts for expected SWOT measurement errors.

Where river models have the most difficulty
The paper reports weaker performance in areas of heavy economic development, multichannel rivers, arid regions and many Arctic rivers. It identifies parts of Siberia and China as particularly challenging. These settings can differ substantially from the simplified conditions built into many models: channels may split, human infrastructure may alter flows, and sparse observations can make calibration and validation harder.
Model skill generally improves as rivers get wider, after accounting for expected measurement errors. But this broad pattern does not erase the large differences from one river reach to another. The paper’s central result is spatial heterogeneity: model performance depends on the river and its setting.

Why simplified river assumptions matter
Many models are built around idealized rivers: a single channel, no dams, no estuary and no glacial influence. The paper estimates that rivers meeting that full set of assumptions make up only about 11% of the rivers monitored by SWOT. Even some rivers that do fit those assumptions are poorly modeled in China and the Arctic.
The 11% figure describes how often the simplified conditions apply; it is not the same as the University of Massachusetts Amherst release’s separate finding that fewer than 10% of reaches fall into a “serious error” category. The release says those reaches are important for water resources. Its account of the study is at EurekAlert!’s University of Massachusetts Amherst release.

What this means for water, climate and hydropower decisions
River models inform questions such as whether enough water is available, how climate change may affect flows, and how to operate hydropower facilities. A model that misrepresents a river’s dynamics can make those estimates less dependable in the places where the mismatch occurs. The study identifies where model development and local evaluation deserve attention; it does not establish that every forecast based on a river model is wrong.
The university release illustrates the challenge with the Connecticut River, where a pumped-storage reservoir can change river depth by more than a meter per day—more than natural water-cycle fluctuations, according to the release. That example shows why human operations can matter to river behavior, but it should not be read as a measurement reported for all rivers or as a universal model error.

What researchers recommend next
The authors argue for using SWOT observations to improve river models and for model structures that represent realistic hydraulics. Satellite observations can help reveal where a model’s assumptions fail, while models remain important for interpreting processes and exploring scenarios beyond the observations available.
