The new game is described as a separate project intended to coexist with RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. Its engine, platforms, release window, gameplay and account policies have not been confirmed in the accessible announcement.
Is a new RuneScape MMO actually happening?
Yes. Jagex announced the project during its RuneFest livestream on October 3, 2026. The studio calls it RS4 for now, but explicitly describes that as a working title rather than a final name. The announcement is posted by Jagex in the official RuneScape subreddit.

Jagex also cautioned that the game is early in development: “We know you’ll have a million questions, but it’s too early to answer anything at this point in development.” The official reveal page linked from the announcement could not be accessed, so details beyond those in Jagex’s post remain unverified.

- Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
Jagex has named Unreal Engine 5 for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, but that is a separate survival game, not this MMO. The engine statement appears in the studio’s Dragonwilds launch announcement and does not establish what technology the new RuneScape MMO uses.
Will RS4 be on PC, console or mobile?
No supported platforms are specified in the accessible announcement. Jagex has not confirmed PC, console or mobile versions, nor cross-play or cross-progression. The linked reveal page redirected to play.runescape.com/4, which could not be accessed; that redirect does not provide platform information.

How may it differ from Old School RuneScape?
The confirmed difference is that Jagex describes the new MMO as a separate game made by a separate team, intended to coexist with both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. The announcement does not describe its art direction, world, combat, progression or monetization, so there is not yet a factual basis for saying how those parts will differ.

RuneScape and Old School RuneScape remain distinct existing games, as reflected on their official RuneScape site and official Old School RuneScape site.
