New Outlook app -How to have separate window for calendar?

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The new Outlook for Windows changes how Mail and Calendar are presented compared with classic Outlook. Instead of the older multi-window desktop experience, the new app is built around a web-style interface where Calendar is available from the left navigation bar and often opens within the same main Outlook window.

For users who like keeping email in one window and their calendar in another, this can feel limiting. The new Outlook does support some separate-window behavior in certain places, but it does not fully match the classic Outlook option to freely open Calendar as an independent module window.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The available choices depend on whether you are using the built-in Calendar view, a pop-out option, the web version of Outlook, or a workaround such as browser windows, pinned apps, or reverting to classic Outlook when a true separate Calendar window is required.

How Calendar Works in the New Outlook App

In the new Outlook for Windows, Calendar is integrated into the same app shell as Mail, People, To Do, and other Microsoft 365 features. Instead of behaving like a fully separate desktop module, Calendar opens as a view inside the new Outlook interface. You switch to it from the left navigation bar, and the main content area changes from your inbox to your calendar grid, agenda, or event editor.

This design is closer to Outlook on the web than classic Outlook for Windows. The new Outlook app is built around a web-based experience, so many actions happen inside one primary window. When you select Calendar, Outlook does not always create a second independent desktop window automatically. In most cases, it replaces the Mail view in the current window with your calendar view. You can then move between day, work week, week, month, and schedule views, open meetings, create events, and manage shared calendars from that same window.

What happens when you open Calendar

Calendar access depends on how you open it and what part of Outlook you are using. The main Calendar button in the navigation bar is intended to switch views, while certain event-related actions may open a separate pop-out window. For example, composing or editing a meeting invitation may appear in a dedicated window depending on your settings and the current version of the app. However, the full Calendar module itself usually remains tied to the main Outlook window.

  • Navigation bar Calendar icon: switches the current Outlook window from Mail to Calendar.
  • Event or meeting editor: may open in a separate pop-out window for creating or editing an appointment.
  • Outlook web calendar: can be opened separately in a browser tab or browser window.
  • Pinned web app: can provide a separate Calendar-like window if you install or pin Outlook on the web.

The new Outlook also keeps account and calendar lists inside the Calendar view. If you have mulle Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Gmail, or shared calendars connected, they appear in the calendar pane and can be toggled on or off. This lets you overlay calendars, show coworker availability, and manage multiple schedules without leaving the new Outlook app. The experience is useful for quick switching, but it is not the same as having Mail and Calendar as two independent Outlook desktop modules by default.

For users moving from classic Outlook, the biggest change is window behavior. Classic Outlook allows more flexible multi-window use, including opening Calendar in a separate Outlook window while keeping Mail open in another. The new Outlook is more restrictive: it focuses on a single-window app layout with selective pop-out support. As a result, keeping Mail and Calendar visible side by side usually requires a workaround, such as opening Outlook Calendar in a browser window, using the web app, or arranging a popped-out item next to the main Outlook window.

Opening Calendar from the Outlook Navigation Bar

In the new Outlook for Windows, Calendar is accessed from the navigation bar rather than from a separate module window by default. The navigation bar usually appears on the left side of the app and includes icons for Mail, Calendar, People, and other Microsoft 365 apps or pinned items. Selecting the Calendar icon switches the main Outlook workspace from your mailbox view to your calendar view within the same app window.

To open Calendar from the navigation bar, click the Calendar icon, which typically looks like a small calendar page. If the navigation bar is collapsed, you may see only icons without labels. Hovering over an icon can show its name, or you can expand the navigation area if your layout allows it. Once selected, the app displays your calendar grid, including day, work week, week, month, or board-style views depending on your settings and account configuration.

  1. Open the new Outlook app for Windows.
  2. Look at the left navigation bar.
  3. Select the Calendar icon.
  4. Use the view selector in Calendar to choose Day, Work week, Week, or Month.
  5. Select the Mail icon to return to your inbox.

This navigation behavior is different from classic Outlook, where Mail, Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks feel more like separate desktop modules inside the same program. In the new Outlook, switching from Mail to Calendar is closer to changing pages in a web app. The current window is reused, so your inbox is no longer visible unless you switch back, use another Outlook window where available, or apply a workaround such as opening Outlook on the web in a browser window.

If you do not see the Calendar icon, check whether the left navigation bar is hidden, narrowed, or customized. You may need to select an app launcher or More apps option to find Calendar. In some managed work or school environments, administrators can control which apps are visible, and the exact layout may differ. Also confirm that you are signed in with an account that has calendar access, such as Outlook.com, Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, or a supported work or school mailbox.

Opening Calendar from the navigation bar is the standard built-in method in the new Outlook app. It is fast for switching context, creating meetings, and checking availability, but it does not automatically create a second independent Calendar window. If your goal is to keep Mail and Calendar visible at the same time, you will usually need to use the app’s pop-out behavior where available, open another Outlook window, or use Outlook on the web alongside the desktop app.

Using Pop-Out or Separate Window Options

In the new Outlook for Windows, the Calendar does not behave the same way as classic Outlook when it comes to separate windows. You can switch to Calendar from the left navigation bar, but the app is still designed around a single main Outlook window. Microsoft has added pop-out behavior for certain items, such as messages, events, and compose windows, but there is not always a dedicated command that opens the entire Calendar module as a fully independent second Outlook window.

The most common built-in option is to open an individual calendar event in its own window. To do this, go to Calendar, select an appointment or meeting, and choose the option to open or edit it. Depending on your version and update channel, the event may open in a separate pop-out window automatically, or you may see a pop-out icon near the top-right of the event pane. This is useful when you want to review a meeting invitation, edit attendees, check the location, or compare event details while still keeping the main Outlook window available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are creating a new event, select New event from the Calendar view. In many builds of the new Outlook, the event editor can be expanded or popped out so it is no longer confined to the side pane or embedded view. This gives you a separate window for the event form, but it is still not the same as opening the full Calendar grid in a second standalone window. You can keep the event editor open while returning to Mail or another part of Outlook in the main window.

What you can usually pop out

  • Email messages: open a message in a separate reading window.
  • New email compose windows: write a message in a detached window.
  • Calendar events: open or edit a meeting or appointment in a pop-out window when supported.
  • Meeting invitations: view the invitation details separately from the main Outlook pane.

What you generally cannot do in the new Outlook app is right-click the Calendar icon and choose a classic-style Open in New Window command for the whole Calendar module. In classic Outlook, users could often keep Mail in one Outlook window and Calendar in another by opening an additional Outlook window. The new Outlook is closer to Outlook on the web in design, so its separate-window support is focused more on individual items than on duplicating full app modules.

If your goal is simply to view Calendar while working with Mail, the built-in pop-out tools may be enough for editing a meeting or checking an invite. If you need the complete calendar board, day view, or week view visible at the same time as your inbox, you will usually need a workaround, such as opening Outlook on the web in a browser window alongside the new Outlook app, or using another browser profile or installed web app window dedicated to Calendar.

Workarounds for Keeping Mail and Calendar Side by Side

If the new Outlook for Windows does not give you the separate Calendar window behavior you were used to in classic Outlook, the most practical approach is to run two Outlook experiences side by side: one focused on Mail and the other focused on Calendar. The new app is more web-style in how it handles navigation, so Calendar often opens within the same app frame rather than as a fully independent module window. With a few window-management workarounds, you can still keep your inbox visible while reviewing appointments, accepting meetings, or planning your day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Outlook on the web as the second Calendar window

The most reliable workaround is to keep the new Outlook app open for Mail, then open Calendar in a browser using Outlook on the web. Go to https://outlook.office.com/calendar and sign in with the same Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com account. You can then place the browser window beside the Outlook app and work with both at the same time. This gives you a true separate window without depending on whether the new Outlook app supports popping Calendar out in your current version.

  • Left side: Keep the new Outlook app open to Mail, such as Inbox or a shared mailbox.
  • Right side: Open Outlook Calendar in Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or another supported browser.
  • Optional: Pin the Calendar browser tab or install Outlook on the web as an app in Edge for a more app-like window.

Install Outlook on the web as a separate app window

In Microsoft Edge, Outlook on the web can be installed as a progressive web app. Open Outlook Calendar in Edge, select the browser menu, then choose Apps and install the site as an app if the option is available. Once installed, it opens in its own window without the normal browser tabs and address bar. This can feel closer to a separate Outlook Calendar app, especially if you pin it to the taskbar next to the new Outlook icon.

After installing it, you can launch Mail from the new Outlook desktop app and launch Calendar from the pinned web app. Windows Snap layouts are useful here: drag one window to the left edge of the screen and the other to the right edge, or hover over the maximize button and choose a split-screen layout. On a larger monitor, this setup is often better than constantly switching between Mail and Calendar in the Outlook navigation bar.

Use multiple browser profiles or accounts when needed

If you manage more than one mailbox or tenant, separate browser profiles can help. For example, you can keep your primary account in the new Outlook app and open another Calendar in a dedicated Edge or Chrome profile. This avoids repeated sign-in prompts and reduces account switching confusion. It is especially useful for consultants, admins, or users who need to monitor a personal calendar and a work calendar at the same time.

Workaround Best for Limitation
Outlook app for Mail plus web Calendar Simple side-by-side viewing Uses two Outlook sessions
Install Outlook web Calendar as an app App-like separate Calendar window Depends on browser support and organization settings
Windows Snap layouts Keeping both windows visible Requires enough screen space
Classic Outlook Users who need native multi-window module behavior May not be the default or preferred client in your organization

These workarounds do not fully recreate classic Outlook’s separate Calendar window model, where Mail, Calendar, People, and other modules could be opened as distinct Outlook windows more naturally. In the new Outlook, the most dependable solution is to combine the desktop app, Outlook on the web, and Windows window snapping. If your daily workflow depends heavily on mulle Outlook module windows, you may still prefer classic Outlook where available, at least until the new Outlook adds more complete multi-window support.

Differences Between New Outlook and Classic Outlook

The biggest difference is that classic Outlook for Windows is a full desktop application, while the new Outlook for Windows is built around the Outlook on the web experience. That design affects how windows, panes, and modules behave. In classic Outlook, Mail, Calendar, People, Tasks, and other folders can be opened in separate desktop windows more freely. In the new Outlook, Calendar is integrated into the same app shell, and separate-window behavior is more limited and more dependent on pop-out features or browser-style workarounds.

In classic Outlook, you can right-click Calendar in the navigation pane and choose options such as opening it in a new window, depending on the version and configuration. This makes it easy to keep your inbox on one monitor and your calendar on another as two independent Outlook windows. You can also open mulle folders or calendars in separate windows and arrange them with standard Windows snapping, taskbar previews, or multi-monitor layouts.

In the new Outlook app, switching from Mail to Calendar usually changes the current view inside the same main window. Some items, such as email messages, event compose windows, or meeting details, may support pop-out behavior, but the Calendar module itself does not always behave like a fully independent second Outlook window. For many users, clicking the Calendar icon replaces the Mail view instead of opening a separate persistent Calendar window.

Common differences in window behavior

Feature New Outlook for Windows Classic Outlook for Windows
Open Calendar as a separate main window Limited or unavailable as a built-in module-level option Generally supported through navigation or folder window options
Keep Mail and Calendar side by side Usually requires a workaround, such as Outlook on the web in a browser Can be done directly with multiple Outlook windows
Multiple independent Outlook windows More restricted and web-app-like More flexible desktop window management
Pop-out support Mostly focused on messages, events, and compose forms Available for more Outlook folders and item windows

This difference can be frustrating if your workflow depends on constant calendar visibility. For example, an assistant scheduling meetings, a manager reviewing availability, or anyone using two monitors may expect Calendar to remain open while processing mail. Classic Outlook handles that workflow more naturally because each window acts like a separate desktop view. The new Outlook is more streamlined, but it does not yet match the same level of multi-window control for every module.

There are also differences in how pinned apps and taskbar shortcuts behave. With classic Outlook, separate Outlook windows may appear as separate previews under the same taskbar icon, and they can usually be restored independently. With the new Outlook, even if an event or message is popped out, the main Calendar area may still be tied to the primary app window. If you need a truly separate Calendar view, opening Outlook on the web in a browser window or installing it as a browser app can often feel closer to the classic multi-window experience.

Users who rely heavily on separate Calendar windows may prefer to keep classic Outlook installed if their Microsoft 365 plan and organization still allow it. The new Outlook is improving over time, but its current behavior is closer to a modern web client than the older desktop Outlook model. Before switching permanently, it is worth testing whether your daily scheduling tasks, multi-monitor setup, shared calendars, and meeting workflows can be handled comfortably in the new app.

Troubleshooting When Calendar Will Not Open Separately

If Calendar will not open in a separate window in the new Outlook for Windows, first confirm what you are trying to open. The new Outlook does not always treat the main Calendar module like classic Outlook did, where Mail, Calendar, People, and other modules could be opened as independent full Outlook windows. In the new app, separate-window behavior is more limited and is most commonly available for individual items, such as an event, meeting invitation, or message, rather than the entire Calendar view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking whether the issue affects all separate-window actions or only Calendar. Open an existing meeting or create a new event, then look for an option such as Open in new window, Pop out, or a diagonal-arrow icon. If an individual event opens separately but the main Calendar view does not, the app is working within its current design limitations. In that case, use a workaround such as opening Outlook on the web in a browser window, pinning that window beside the Outlook app, or using the browser’s install-app option to create a separate calendar-style window.

Checks to try in the new Outlook app

  • Update the app: Open the Microsoft Store, go to Library, and install any updates for Outlook and WebView2-related components. The new Outlook depends heavily on web-based rendering.
  • Restart Outlook: Close the app completely, including any background window, then reopen it and try Calendar again.
  • Try the web version: Go to outlook.office.com, open Calendar, and test whether it works correctly there. If it works in the browser, the issue may be with the Windows app shell rather than your mailbox.
  • Check account type: Some features vary depending on whether you are using a Microsoft 365 work or school account, Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo, or another connected account.
  • Disable conflicting browser extensions: If you use Outlook on the web as a workaround, ad blockers, script blockers, or privacy extensions can interfere with pop-out behavior.

If the Calendar button does nothing, opens a blank page, or returns to Mail immediately, remove and re-add the affected account in the new Outlook. You can also toggle back to classic Outlook, if available in your installation, to determine whether the problem is specific to the new Outlook interface. For work or school accounts, also check with your Microsoft 365 administrator, because organizational policies can affect connected experiences, web access, and preview features.

When the separate-window option is missing entirely, it is usually not a local fault. Microsoft is still aligning the new Outlook for Windows with features from classic Outlook, and full multi-window module support is not identical. For users who rely on a dedicated Calendar window all day, the most reliable setup is to keep classic Outlook installed where permitted, use Outlook on the web in a separate browser window, or arrange the new Outlook and a browser-based Calendar side by side with Windows Snap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open Calendar in a separate window in the new Outlook for Windows?

The new Outlook for Windows does not offer the same full separate Calendar window behavior as classic Outlook. In many cases, selecting Calendar from the left navigation switches the main Outlook view from Mail to Calendar instead of opening another desktop window. If a pop-out option is available in your version, it is usually limited to specific items such as events or compose windows rather than the entire Calendar module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I keep Mail and Calendar visible side by side in the new Outlook?

The most reliable workaround is to open Outlook mail in the desktop app and open Outlook Calendar in a browser at outlook.office.com/calendar, then place the two windows side by side. You can also install the Outlook web app as a separate app from Microsoft Edge or Chrome, which makes the calendar feel more like a standalone window. This does not exactly match classic Outlook, but it gives you separate windows for multitasking.

Is there a pop-out button for Calendar in the new Outlook?

The new Outlook may show pop-out controls for individual messages, meeting invites, or event editing windows, depending on the account type and current app version. It generally does not provide a universal “open Calendar in new window” button like many classic Outlook users expect. Microsoft updates the new Outlook frequently, so available window controls can differ between tenants, builds, and account configurations.

Can I switch back to classic Outlook to get a separate Calendar window?

If classic Outlook is still available on your device and your organization allows it, you can switch back and use its separate window support. In classic Outlook, you can open Calendar, right-click the Calendar icon or use window options, and keep Mail and Calendar open at the same time. This is one of the feature gaps users often notice when moving from classic Outlook to the new Outlook.

What should I do if Calendar will not open or keeps replacing my Mail view?

First, confirm that you are using the Calendar icon in the left navigation bar and that your account has Calendar enabled. Restart the app, check for updates in the Microsoft Store or Office update channel, and try Outlook on the web to see whether the issue is app-specific. If you need a separate Calendar immediately, use the browser version as a temporary separate window while troubleshooting the desktop app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

The new Outlook for Windows lets you access Calendar from the left rail, and some calendar items or compose windows can pop out, but it does not fully match classic Outlook’s ability to keep Mail and Calendar open as separate, independent Outlook windows.

If you need a dedicated calendar view, use the web version in a separate browser window, install it as a PWA, or keep classic Outlook available where supported. For users who rely heavily on side-by-side mail and calendar workflows, classic Outlook remains the more flexible option for now.
