Google Workspace icon updates are rolling out in phases, and you’ll typically see them first inside the Google app ecosystem on Android and in web experiences like the Google apps launcher.
If you’re managing a workspace rollout for a team—or you simply want to know why your icons changed overnight—this guide covers what’s likely happening, how to check whether you’re included, and what to do if the new icons don’t appear correctly.

What’s rolling out: new Google Workspace icons on Android and web
Google’s icon refresh updates the visual identity of common Workspace entry points (apps and surfaces) so the icons look more consistent across devices and form factors. Because rollouts are staged, different accounts and devices may show different icon sets at the same time.

Where you’ll notice the change
You’ll typically spot the new icons in high-visibility navigation surfaces rather than in every single page element.
- Android: Google apps and Workspace entry points in app lists, home navigation patterns, and in-app switches.
- Web: Google apps launcher (9-dot grid), account switcher menus, and top-level navigation elements within Google properties.
- Cross-product: When you jump between Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Chat, Meet, and Docs-like experiences, the app tiles/icons may look updated.
What stays the same (and what might not)
Icon updates change how apps are represented; they shouldn’t change how the underlying services work (mail delivery, calendar sync, document editing, etc.).
However, you can still see minor knock-on effects that feel like “behavior changes” because navigation is tied to UI assets.

- May change: icon shapes, tile sizes, icon alignment in dense lists, and how quickly the UI refreshes after sign-in.
- May be temporary: cached icon sets that persist until you refresh or clear cached data.

Confirmation is mostly visual. Use the same surfaces across devices to compare.

- ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.
- On web, open a Google property (for example, Gmail or Google Drive).
- Click the 9-dot app launcher in the corner.
- Scan the tiles for Workspace apps you use daily (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Chat, Meet).
- Repeat the same check in an incognito window to reduce the impact of old cached assets.
- On Android, open the Google app entry point and check the app list/switcher for the updated tiles.
If the new icons appear in incognito but not in normal mode, caching is the likely culprit.
How to get the new icons faster (when rollout is staggered)
There’s no guaranteed “force update” for rollout waves, but you can reduce delays caused by outdated app builds and stale cached UI assets.
Android: update Google apps and the OS components
Icon assets are delivered through Google app bundles and webview components, so updates matter.

- Restart the phone once after the updates finish.
Rollouts can still be phased by account, but this typically removes the most common blockers.

Web: update your browser and refresh sessions
On web, icon files are cached aggressively. A browser update and a clean refresh often resolves mismatches.
- Update Chrome, Edge, or Firefox to the latest stable version.
- Sign out of your Google account and sign back in (only if you’re troubleshooting).
- Hard refresh the page: press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (macOS).
- Re-open the 9-dot app launcher and verify the icon set.
If the icons look wrong or don’t update
When the new icons fail to appear—or the icons display as placeholders—use a checklist that targets caching, account state, and rendering layers.
Android troubleshooting checklist
- Check connectivity: Toggle Wi‑Fi and mobile data once, then retry.
- Force stop and reopen: Settings → Apps → (Google or the affected Workspace app) → Force stop → reopen.
- Clear cache (not data): Settings → Apps → (affected app) → Storage → Clear cache.
- Remove and re-add the account: Settings → Accounts → Google → remove the account, then add it back.
- Update WebView/Chrome: Confirm Android System WebView and Chrome are updated.
If you rely on offline access (Drive offline files or Gmail offline patterns), clearing cache may temporarily disrupt UI-only elements, but your documents and messages should remain intact.

- Try incognito: Open an incognito/private window and check the 9-dot app launcher.
- Clear site data: Browser settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → select cached images and files (keep cookies if you want to avoid re-auth).
- Disable extensions temporarily: Ad blockers and privacy extensions can block icon assets.
- Check multiple accounts: Sign into a different Google Workspace account (if you have one) and compare.
- Verify correct profile: Ensure you’re in the right browser profile on multi-user systems.

Most icon issues come down to a few predictable reasons.

- Staggered rollout: Different devices/accounts can be on different icon versions. If it works on one device but not the other, it’s usually expected.
- Cached assets: The UI may keep old icons until a refresh or cache clear.
- Partial app updates: Updating Gmail but not Google Chat (or vice versa) can make some tiles appear out of sync.
- Multiple Google accounts: Workspace icon sets can vary per account configuration and rollout bucket.
- Custom browsers and enterprise policies: Managed devices (MDM) may delay Chrome/Android WebView updates.
- Network filtering: Some enterprise networks proxy or filter requests, which can delay or block icon delivery.
Accessibility and readability considerations
An icon refresh should improve visual consistency, but users with specific accessibility preferences may notice changes in spacing, contrast, or touch targets.
- Android display size: If you use a larger display size, icons may wrap differently in app lists. Check Settings → Display → Display size if tiles look cramped.
- High contrast / dark theme: Toggle dark mode and verify that the icon palette remains readable in both themes.
- Screen readers: Icons are decorative; labels should still be accessible. If labels appear missing, clear cache for the affected app and retry.
Practical workflow tips for teams
Icon updates can create momentary confusion (“Where did Chat go?”). Team habits can reduce that friction.
- Create a quick reference: Share a one-page internal note listing the icon/tile locations for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Chat, and Meet.
- Use consistent entry points: Encourage users to start from the 9-dot launcher on web and the main Workspace app list on Android.
- Verify critical shortcuts: If you distribute shortcuts (bookmarks, home screen widgets), verify they still route correctly after updates.
If you administer devices, confirm that Android updates and Chrome/Android System WebView are allowed on managed endpoints.

FAQs about Google Workspace icons rollout
Why do I have the new Google Workspace icons on web but not on my Android phone?
Icon rollouts are staged. Your web session may have picked up updated assets while your Android device is still on the previous icon bundle, often due to app build version or caching.
Do new icons change where apps open or how sharing works?
No. The icon refresh should not change destinations (URLs) or Workspace permissions. If an app opens incorrectly, that’s more likely a shortcut/bookmark or account issue than the icons themselves.
Can I force the rollout to show immediately?
You can’t reliably force Google’s rollout bucket, but you can reduce delays by updating Google apps, Chrome/Android System WebView, and clearing cached site/app data.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
My icons show placeholders or broken tiles—what should I do first?
First try incognito (web) or clearing cache and force-stopping the affected app (Android). If it still fails, check extensions, network filtering, and sign-in state.
Does this affect Google Workspace admin settings?
Icon updates are primarily client UI changes. Admin controls typically don’t govern the icon artwork, though managed-device update policies can affect when users receive the updated assets.
Bottom Line
New Google Workspace icons on Android and web are a phased UI update, not a change to Workspace functionality. If you don’t see the update right away, it’s usually rollout timing plus caching.
Update your Google apps, refresh web sessions, and use incognito/private mode plus cache clearing to confirm what’s happening. If icons still misrender, focus on app/webview versions, browser extensions, and account state.
