If you use these apps daily, the icon change can be more than visual—it’s often tied to updated app builds that may also include minor UI tweaks and behavior changes.
Rollouts usually happen in waves, so you might not get the new look immediately even if your phone is up to date. This guide tells you what’s changing, where it shows up, how to speed up the update, and what to try when nothing changes after an update.

What the new Google Phone, Messages, & Contacts app icons are
The rollout updates the launcher icons for three Google apps: Google Phone (dialer), Google Messages (SMS/RCS), and Google Contacts (address book). The change typically arrives with updated app versions distributed through the Google Play Store.

Because icon assets live inside the app package, you normally need the updated app build—not just an Android OS update—for the new icon to appear.

Where you’ll see the icon changes
In most cases, the new icons appear wherever Android displays app launcher icons:
- Launcher app drawer (the grid/list of installed apps)
- Home screen shortcuts created from the app’s icon
- Recent apps / task switcher (sometimes, depending on the device and launcher)
If you added shortcuts long ago, you may need to re-pin the shortcut to refresh the icon image.
Prerequisites before you expect the new icons
Before troubleshooting, confirm these basics:
- Android version: Many Pixel and recent Android builds handle icon asset updates consistently, especially on Android 13, 14, and 15.
- Use the Google apps you expect to change: Make sure the icons you’re seeing correspond to the Google Phone, Messages, and Contacts apps—not a carrier variant or third-party alternative.
- Play Store auto-updates: If auto-update is off, you might simply be behind on app versions.
- Stable internet: Icon rollout delivery depends on successful app updates from Play.
How to get the new icons on your device
The fastest reliable path is updating each app from the Play Store, then forcing your launcher to refresh the shortcut visuals.
Update via Google Play Store (recommended)
Do this one app at a time so you can confirm each update completed successfully.
- Open Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Select Manage apps & device.
- Open Updates available.
- Update these apps if present: Google Phone, Google Messages, and Contacts (Google Contacts / Contacts by Google, depending on your listing).
- After each update finishes, wait 1–2 minutes before checking the icon so the launcher can cache the new asset.
Restart and re-pin app icons
If you don’t see changes on your home screen, your existing shortcuts may still reference cached icon bitmaps.
- Hold on the old icon shortcut for Google Phone, tap Remove.
- Open the app drawer, find the updated Google Phone icon, then add to home.
- Repeat for Google Messages and Contacts.
- Optional: restart the phone once after all updates.
Check the default dialer and messaging apps
If your device defaults to a different dialer or SMS app, the updated icons might not matter because your launcher shows the default app’s entry.

- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap Default apps.
- Set Phone app to Google Phone.
- Set SMS app to Google Messages.
- Return to your home screen and re-check the icons.
Confirm your launcher isn’t overriding icons
Some launchers can apply icon themes, packs, or “adaptive” icons that replace app assets. That can mask the rollout even when the app updated.
- Open your launcher settings.
- Look for options like Icon pack, Theme, or Adaptive icons.
- Temporarily disable the icon pack/theme.
- Re-pin the shortcuts after disabling so Android uses the app’s native icon.
Troubleshooting when the new icons don’t show up
Icon rollouts commonly use staged delivery. If you updated everything and nothing changed, use the checks below in order.
1) Icons are stuck for a specific launcher
If the icon looks old on your home screen but correct in the app drawer, your shortcut cache is the usual culprit.
- Remove the shortcut(s) from the home screen.
- Restart your device.
- Add the shortcut again from the updated app drawer icon.
2) Play Store shows updated apps but icons don’t change
Confirm you really updated the correct packages.
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps.
- Search for Google Phone, open it, and check the Version.
- Repeat for Google Messages and Contacts.
- Compare the version numbers to the latest available in Play Store listing (open the app listing to see the current build info when available).
If the versions match but the icon doesn’t, continue below with cache steps and rollout timing.
3) App cache glitches
Cache issues can delay UI/icon refresh. This is safe if you only clear cache (not storage).

- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache (do not select Clear storage unless you’re troubleshooting more aggressively).
- Repeat for Google Messages and Contacts.
- Re-check the icons after a short wait.
4) Staged rollout delays
Google often rolls out icons in waves based on device, region, and app build group. It can take days to weeks for everyone on the same Android version to see the change.

- Wait 24–72 hours after updating all three apps.
- Re-check Play Store for another update (sometimes icons land in a follow-up patch).
- Check in a different network (Wi‑Fi vs mobile data) if updates appear stuck.
5) Side-loaded or region-restricted app builds
If you installed these apps via side-loading, work profiles, or region-specific availability, your app build may not align with the rollout.
- Verify the source: open each app’s Play Store listing if possible.
- If you used APKs, prefer the Play Store update for the final icon asset.
- Ensure Play Services are up to date so the Play delivery pipeline functions normally.
What to watch for after the icon switch
Icon changes usually won’t alter core functions like calling, messaging, or contacts syncing—but new app builds can include small UI and behavior updates.
Notification and permissions behavior
After app updates, Android may re-check notification permissions. Confirm the apps are allowed to send alerts.

- Go to Settings > Apps > Google Messages > Notifications.
- Ensure message notifications are enabled.
- Repeat for Google Phone and Contacts if you use call/contact-related notifications.
PIN/SMS verification and account sync
For many users, Messages is part of account recovery workflows. If icons change, still make sure the app can receive verification SMS normally.
- Test a regular SMS thread.
- If RCS is active, check that RCS status is still connected inside Messages settings.
- For Contacts, verify that recent changes still sync via your Google account.
Alternatives if you can’t wait for the rollout
If the icon update matters for a reason (accessibility, organization, consistency across devices), you have a few options. Most “fast fixes” aren’t perfect, so use them with the right expectations.
Temporarily use updated app versions from Play Store-only
Sometimes waiting isn’t necessary—if you join the right Play testing track, you may get the update earlier.

- If you see Join the beta or Try it, consider joining.
- Update the apps after joining and re-check the icons.
Be aware: beta builds can be less stable, and UI changes may differ from the final rollout.

Icon packs can force a consistent look even if Google’s rollout hasn’t reached you. The downside: icon packs may not match the updated visual style, and some packs break adaptive icon behavior.
- Choose an icon pack compatible with your launcher.
- Apply only to these apps, if your launcher supports app-specific overrides.
- After applying, confirm that the app drawer and home screen show the same icon style you want.
Risk-aware APK options (use at your own discretion)
Some users try installing an APK build that already includes the updated icon asset. This can work, but it also carries risks: security exposure, broken updates, or mismatched app assets.
- Only download from sources you trust and verify signatures when possible.
- Prefer APKs that are signed the same way as the official Play build.
- After installing, you may lose clean Play Store updates for that package until it realigns.
If you’re using a work profile or device management, avoid this route—policies may block it.

Why don’t I see the new icons even though my apps updated?
Most often it’s staged rollout timing or launcher shortcut caching. Remove and re-pin the shortcuts from the app drawer after the apps update, then check again after 24–72 hours.
Will the icon change affect calls, SMS, or contacts syncing?
Icon assets usually don’t change the underlying functionality. However, the app update that brings the icon can include UI or behavior tweaks, so review any new permission prompts and notification settings.

My app icon changed in the app drawer but not on my home screen. What’s wrong?
Your home screen shortcut is likely using a cached icon. Remove the shortcut and add it again from the updated app drawer icon.
Does Android version matter?
It can. Recent Android versions handle icon updates and adaptive icon rendering more consistently. Even so, the icon image still comes from the app package, so updating the apps is the real requirement.
Can I speed up the rollout beyond updating the apps?
You can’t force Google’s staged delivery reliably, but you can reduce delays by updating via Play Store, refreshing launcher shortcuts, and verifying you didn’t override icons with an icon pack or theme.
