Google Messages has already gained features that once belonged on every “still waiting for” list, including scheduled sending, search, custom chat colors and backgrounds, RCS group controls, Gemini, and Messages for Web. The remaining gaps are less about basic messaging and more about uneven rollouts, cross-platform limits, and tools that have not been confirmed for general release.
Here’s what is still missing or inconsistent, what has only been reported in testing, and what you can use today. A feature spotted in a beta or limited rollout is not a promise that it will reach every phone.

Google Messages features that are already available
Some older wishlists are out of date. Google currently documents the following features, though access to particular options can still vary by app build, account, country, device, or server-side rollout.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Scheduled messages: In a conversation, type a message and touch and hold Send. Choose a suggested time or a custom date and time. Google says this works on Android 7.0 and newer; if the phone has no Wi-Fi or mobile data at the scheduled time, the message sends when connectivity returns. You can manage a scheduled message afterward. Google’s Messages help
- Message search: Tap Search, enter a term, and use available filters to narrow results. Exact filters and labels can differ as the interface changes. Google’s Messages help
- Custom bubbles and backgrounds: Google advertises conversation backgrounds and bubble colors, but their presence on the product page does not mean every user has the same controls yet. Google’s Messages overview
- RCS group controls: Google lists group naming and the ability to add, remove, or leave people in RCS group conversations. These controls depend on the conversation being RCS rather than SMS/MMS. Google’s Messages overview
- Gemini: Google describes Gemini in Messages as a way to draft, brainstorm, plan, or chat. Availability depends on eligibility, including factors such as country, language, account, and device. Google’s Messages overview
- Messages for Web: Pair an Android phone with the web client at messages.google.com. It is a web-based companion experience, not proof of an independent cloud messenger; SMS still depends on the phone and carrier connection. Google Messages product page
Google distinguishes these documented capabilities from features it is still testing or rolling out. Because Messages can activate features server-side, updating the app alone does not guarantee access.

Google Messages features still missing or inconsistent
1. RCS message editing — reported in testing or rollout coverage
Editing a sent message would let someone fix a typo without sending a correction or deleting and rewriting the message. Late-2025 coverage described editing among features appearing in testing or rollout, but that is not confirmation of universal stable availability. 9to5Google’s December 2025 report
Until Google documents the behavior, key details remain unsettled: whether editing is limited to RCS, how long the edit window lasts, whether recipients can view an edit history, and what happens when a group member’s device or carrier does not support it. Do not assume it works in SMS/MMS or Android-to-iPhone conversations. Check the message’s own menu for an edit option rather than relying on a beta screenshot.
2. Live location sharing — reported as being prepared, not broadly confirmed
A February 2026 report described a location-sharing upgrade associated with Find Hub that appeared more prominently in the app but was not broadly live. That supports “reported as in preparation or testing,” not a guaranteed launch or date. TechRadar’s report

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
The useful version would let you share a live position for a chosen duration, see whether sharing is active or expired, and stop it from the conversation. That would be different from sending a static Google Maps link: a link can show a place, but it is not necessarily an ongoing, time-limited location feed managed inside Messages. Google Maps is the practical alternative when you need live location sharing now.
3. End-to-end encryption for Android-to-iPhone RCS — dependent on both platforms
“RCS” does not automatically mean every conversation has the same encryption. Google says Google Messages conversations with other Google Messages users can have end-to-end encryption; its product overview also describes RCS messaging between Android and iPhone. Those are separate claims, and the first should not be generalized to the second. Google’s Messages overview
In March 2026, MacRumors reported that Apple was testing end-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS, without a broad launch at that point. The status depends on the current implementations on both platforms, so check current Google and Apple documentation before treating Android-to-iPhone RCS as end-to-end encrypted. SMS/MMS is not equivalent to encrypted RCS. MacRumors’ report

4. Native polls and richer group collaboration — a strong request
Google Messages can manage RCS groups, but a native poll would help people make group decisions without a long run of replies. Useful details would include live vote totals, multiple-choice options, expiration, and a clear fallback when a participant is on SMS/MMS or an iPhone without compatible support.

Apple added polls to Messages in iOS 26, but that does not establish that Google is building polls or that cross-platform groups can participate consistently. Treat polls as a high-value request, not a confirmed Google feature. October 2025 feature roundup
5. More complete chat personalization — partly live, still uneven
Google now advertises custom bubble colors and conversation backgrounds, so it would be inaccurate to say all customization is missing. The remaining gap is breadth and consistency: users may want to pick a personal photo, control wallpaper separately from bubble colors, and have clearer per-conversation theme options. Reports and user posts indicate that access to newer customization can be uneven. Google’s feature overview and user discussion

Google has not established that a change on one phone changes what the other participant sees. Treat themes as local presentation unless Google says otherwise. More complete customization would bring Messages closer to apps that offer personal-image backgrounds or finer visual controls, but it is a polish issue rather than a missing core messaging function.
6. Unsubscribe controls for unwanted texts — useful, but not a scam shield
Coverage has described an unsubscribe action for some SMS and RCS messages as being tested or rolled out. It is intended for legitimate recurring senders that support opt-outs; availability and effectiveness can depend on sender formatting, message type, region, and carrier support. 9to5Google’s report
Keep the three actions distinct: unsubscribe asks a compliant sender to stop recurring messages; block prevents messages from a sender; report spam moves a conversation into spam reporting controls and may provide abuse signals. An unsubscribe option cannot reliably stop criminal campaigns. Do not click suspicious opt-out links or reply to obvious scams; block and report them instead. Google has separately announced scam-detection and protection measures for Messages. Google’s security announcement

7. Group icons and more reliable mentions — lower-priority rollout details
Custom group icons have appeared in reporting about features in Google’s rollout pipeline. It is not established here whether users can choose an emoji, photo, or generated image, whether every member can change it, or whether the feature works consistently in mixed Android/iPhone groups. A group icon would be separate from the already documented ability to name an RCS group. 9to5Google’s report
Mentions have also been reported as arriving or rolling out, so they should not be described as wholly absent. The unresolved question is consistency: whether everyone has them, whether they notify muted members, and whether they work across platforms and older group threads. TechRadar reported that mentions could notify a specific member despite muted chat notifications; treat that as reported behavior, not a universal Google guarantee. TechRadar’s report on group features
8. A more independent desktop and multi-device experience — a quality-of-life gap
Messages for Web already gives users a paired browser experience, and Google describes Messages as usable across phone, tablet, and computer. What is not established is that the web client is a fully independent, cloud-synchronized service. Google’s Messages overview
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPower users may still want a true desktop app, more dependable tablet synchronization, less repeated pairing, stronger media and notification handling, and an experience that relies less on the handset being available. Those are reasonable requests, not a specific confirmed feature roadmap. Google’s product page points users to web pairing rather than promising offline, phone-independent delivery. Quick Recap
What Google should prioritize
| Priority | Why it matters | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable editing and delivery controls | Fixes mistakes and gives users clearer control over sent messages. | Editing has been reported in testing or rollout coverage; universal release is not established. |
| Cross-platform privacy parity | Android and iPhone users need to know whether their RCS conversation is protected end to end. | Depends on compatible implementations across platforms; do not assume encryption parity. |
| Location sharing and group tools | Reduces app switching and makes planning with a group easier. | Live location is reported as in preparation; polls remain a request. |
| Spam management | Legitimate opt-outs should be easier, without encouraging risky interaction with scams. | Unsubscribe is reported in testing or rollout; not a universal anti-spam solution. |
| Customization and desktop polish | Improves everyday comfort for users who personalize chats or work at a computer. | Customization is partly documented but uneven; desktop independence is not a confirmed roadmap item. |
How to check whether a feature has reached your phone
- Check the Play Store: Open Google Play, find Google Messages, and check whether an update is available. Updating is sensible, but it does not force a server-side rollout.
- Check the conversation itself: Open the relevant chat and inspect its menus for options such as editing, location sharing, group mentions, or customization. Availability can differ between conversations, especially where RCS support differs.
- Confirm the conversation type: RCS-only capabilities will not necessarily appear in SMS/MMS conversations. A participant’s device, carrier, region, or platform may affect group support.
- Separate beta sightings from releases: A beta screen, code discovery, or limited user report shows that something may be under development or trial; it does not confirm a stable public launch.
- When comparing reports, note context: Record the phone, country, Android version, app version, and whether the chat is RCS. Two people on the same app version can still see different features.
