Selenium 4 brought standards alignment, easier driver setup, relationship-based locators, a modernized Grid, and the developing WebDriver BiDi capability. The practical choice is not whether to adopt one uniform bundle: it is which features solve a problem in your suite, and whether your Selenium language binding and exact release support them.
What are the new features in Selenium 4?
The main changes fall into five areas. W3C WebDriver alignment strengthens standards-based interoperability; Selenium Manager can reduce manual driver setup; relative locators add spatial ways to find elements; Grid supports remote and distributed execution; and WebDriver BiDi introduces a bidirectional channel for browser commands and events. Their availability and maturity are not identical across releases and language bindings.

| Feature | What it changes | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| W3C WebDriver alignment | Aligns Selenium’s WebDriver implementation with the W3C standard. | For standards-based WebDriver automation across supported browsers. |
| Selenium Manager | Can resolve and cache a compatible driver when one is not already supplied. | For reducing manual driver installation and version maintenance. |
| Relative locators | Find elements based on their position relative to a known element. | When the spatial relationship is stable but a useful direct locator is unavailable. |
| Grid | Runs WebDriver sessions remotely across machines and environments. | For distributed execution, parallel test work, and broader browser or OS coverage. |
| WebDriver BiDi | Provides a bidirectional channel for commands and browser events. | When the exact capability is supported by your binding and Selenium release. |
What does W3C WebDriver alignment mean?
Selenium 4 aligned its WebDriver implementation with the W3C WebDriver standard. This makes standards-based protocol interoperability the baseline, rather than implying that every browser or environment behaves identically. Browser-specific behavior and differences in versions or configuration can still affect test results. See the Selenium 4 announcement.

Selenium Manager is the official driver manager shipped with Selenium releases. Beginning with Selenium 4.6, when a driver has not been supplied, the Selenium binding can invoke the manager to identify the installed browser version, resolve a matching driver using vendor metadata, download it, and cache it locally. You can continue to manage and provide drivers yourself. The official documentation describes this as a fallback, not a requirement to abandon explicit driver paths.

Driver and browser management milestones
| Capability | Documented starting release |
|---|---|
| Driver management | Selenium 4.6 |
| Chrome browser management | Selenium 4.11 |
| Firefox browser management | Selenium 4.12 |
| Edge browser management | Selenium 4.14 |
These are Selenium project milestones, not a guarantee that every setup can automatically download or launch a browser. Automated resolution needs access to vendor metadata and download endpoints. Proxies or firewalls may block it; some Linux browser builds need additional OS libraries; and downloading the Edge browser on Windows differs because its installer requires administrator rights. In restricted environments, use a preinstalled driver or explicit configuration. See the Selenium Manager documentation.
What are relative locators in Selenium 4?
Relative locators let you locate a target by its spatial relationship to an element you already know, such as finding it above, below, or beside that reference element. They are useful when the target lacks a stable ID, name, or other suitable direct attribute and the spatial relationship is itself meaningful.
Rank #2
Prefer a stable direct locator when one exists. A relationship-based locator depends on layout, so responsive changes, redesigns, or content shifts can make it point elsewhere or fail. Treat the relationship as a real part of the interface contract, not as a substitute for a robust locator in every case. Selenium’s locator strategies documentation covers the available approaches.

What is new in Selenium Grid 4?
Grid lets WebDriver clients create sessions on remote machines rather than only on the machine running the test. Teams can distribute execution and cover different browser and operating-system environments. Selenium 4 modernized Grid, but deployment is infrastructure: teams need to configure nodes and capacity for their workload. Grid does not automatically make every suite faster or simpler; outcomes depend on configuration, available capacity, and the tests being run. The Grid documentation explains its deployment and operation.

What is WebDriver BiDi?
WebDriver BiDi is a bidirectional communication channel between an automation client and the browser. In contrast with the familiar request-and-response flow of classic WebDriver, BiDi enables browser events as well as commands. It is an evolving capability area, not a feature set with uniform support across every language binding and Selenium release.
Before depending on a BiDi command, check the API documentation for your chosen language binding and the exact Selenium version you plan to deploy. Selenium 4.49, released September 9, 2026, continued work on bindings and BiDi schema and commands; consult the Selenium 4.49 release notes and verify the latest release information before adopting a specific API.

How should you choose what to adopt?
- Setup: If keeping browser drivers aligned is a recurring task, try Selenium Manager where network and OS constraints permit. Keep explicit driver configuration for controlled or offline environments.
- Locators: Use a stable direct attribute first. Reach for a relative locator when the spatial relationship is clear and likely to remain stable.
- Execution: Stay with local sessions for a simple single-machine suite; evaluate Grid when remote environments, distributed execution, or broader coverage justify its operational work.
- Protocol capability: Use classic WebDriver for established workflows; adopt BiDi only after confirming the required command exists in the binding and version you will run.

If your task is capturing website screenshots rather than testing browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It is not a Selenium replacement for interactive test suites. For a screenshot, cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
