The finding may help explain cognitive resilience, but it does not show that their brains literally grew younger, or that new neurons caused their memory advantage.
What did the study find?
Ahmed Disouky and colleagues reported a distinct profile of neurogenesis-related molecular activity in SuperAgers. The authors say it may reflect a “resilience signature”—a pattern associated with unusually strong memory in later life. The study also found early changes in chromatin accessibility in neurogenic cells among people with preclinical Alzheimer’s pathology; those changes were more evident in the Alzheimer’s disease group. The researchers reported additional alterations in astrocytes and CA1 neurons associated with cognitive function.
The study authors wrote that they identified a profile in SuperAgers that “may reflect a ‘resilience signature’.” That cautious wording matters: the findings show a molecular association, not a demonstrated mechanism that protects memory.
How was the research conducted?
Published online in Nature on 25 February 2026, the study examined donated postmortem hippocampal tissue from five groups: young adults with intact memory, older adults with no cognitive impairment, older adults with extraordinary memory (SuperAgers), adults with preclinical intermediate pathology, and adults with Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers used single-nucleus RNA sequencing and single-nucleus chromatin-accessibility sequencing to profile 355,997 nuclei. That figure refers to cells’ nuclei analyzed, not to the number of people or donated brains. Nature: “Human hippocampal neurogenesis in adulthood, ageing and Alzheimer’s disease”.

The analysis identified neural stem cells, neuroblasts and immature granule neurons—cell types relevant to the study of adult hippocampal neurogenesis. The hippocampus is important to memory, but identifying these cells and their molecular profiles does not by itself establish how much new-neuron production occurred or what effect it had on memory.
Why does “age in reverse” need a qualification?
“Age in reverse” is a headline metaphor, not the study’s measured result. The researchers compared molecular profiles in brain tissue collected after death; they did not track individuals’ brains becoming younger over time. Nor was the study an intervention trial. It cannot show that neurogenesis caused exceptional memory, that ageing was reversed, or that a particular activity or product can recreate the observed profile.

The authors note that “the existence of human hippocampal neurogenesis has long been disputed and its relevance in cognition remains unknown.” Their findings add evidence about neurogenesis-related cells and molecular patterns, while leaving the functional significance for cognition unsettled.
How many SuperAgers were included?
Men’s Health reports that the study involved 38 donated brain samples across the five groups, including six SuperAger brains. These sample counts are separate from the 355,997 nuclei profiled. The SuperAger group is small, which limits how confidently the pattern can be generalized to other people with exceptional memory. Can you become a SuperAger?
This study does not establish a way to become a SuperAger. It did not test memory training, exercise, diet, supplements, devices or other interventions, and it cannot tell readers which actions produce the molecular profile found in the donated brains.
Men’s Health discusses genetics, vascular health, physical activity, cognitive and social engagement, and immune biology as possible contributors to cognitive resilience. Those are contextual possibilities, not interventions shown by this study to create a SuperAger profile. The paper’s authors conclude that their work points to a molecular signature distinguishing resilience and deterioration with ageing; it does not establish how to generate that signature.

What the findings do—and do not—show
- They show: a distinct neurogenesis-related molecular profile in the SuperAger donor group, alongside differences in other cells and in groups with Alzheimer’s-related pathology.
- They do not show: that the brain literally becomes younger, that neurogenesis caused SuperAgers’ memory, or that any known intervention can reproduce the profile.
- They leave open: whether the observed neurogenesis-related patterns contribute to cognitive resilience, reflect other protective factors, or are connected in a more complex way.
