Never Plug These Devices Into a Smart Plug Without Checking the Manual

Smart plugs have model-specific limits, not one universal blacklist. Check ratings and instructions carefully before connecting heaters, motors, refrigerators, medical equipment, or power strips.

There is no universal blacklist of appliances that must never be used with every smart plug. The safe answer depends on the plug’s exact rating and instructions, the appliance’s requirements, and whether it is safe to switch that appliance remotely. Never exceed the smart plug’s rated load; use particular caution with heaters, motor-driven appliances, equipment that needs uninterrupted power, and power strips.

Start with the ratings and both manuals

Check the smart plug’s rated current and wattage, then compare them with the appliance’s requirements. TP-Link warns not to connect an appliance whose power exceeds the plug’s maximum load, because doing so can create a safety hazard. The rating is a limit, not a target, and a higher-rated smart plug does not automatically make every appliance suitable. TP-Link’s load guidance also notes that some inductive loads can draw higher current when starting than their running power suggests.

Read the appliance manual as well as the plug manual. Check for restrictions on remote switching, unattended operation, extension cords or power strips, and whether the appliance must stay powered continuously. Confirm the plug and appliance are compatible with the electrical system and voltage in your region.

Appliances that need extra caution

Space heaters and other heating appliances

Heaters draw substantial power, so compare their stated load with the smart plug’s rating and follow both manuals. TP-Link lists space heaters, hair dryers, toasters, kettles, and irons as high-power appliances to use cautiously with its smart plugs; that is caution, not a claim that every model is categorically incompatible. TP-Link’s guidance is specific to its products and instructions.

Some manufacturers set a stricter rule. The Zooz ZEN04 manual says: “Do NOT use this Z-Wave ™ device to control electric heaters or other appliances which produce the risk of fire, burns, or electrical shock when unattended.” Follow that prohibition for the ZEN04; do not assume it is the rule for every smart plug. Read the Zooz ZEN04 manual.

Motor-driven appliances

Air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, fans, water pumps, and vacuum cleaners are examples of inductive loads that TP-Link says may have higher startup current. A motor’s normal running draw may therefore understate what it demands when it starts. Check the appliance’s starting requirements if provided and the smart plug’s instructions; do not rely on a running-watt figure alone. TP-Link explains the startup-current concern.

Refrigerators and other devices that need continuous power

For a refrigerator, the question is not only whether the plug can handle the load: an accidental schedule, lost connection, or remote switch-off could interrupt power. Panasonic advises against connecting a refrigerator or another device requiring constant power to the plug described in its FAQ. That is Panasonic guidance for the referenced product, not a universal rule for every smart plug. See Panasonic’s FAQ.

Medical and life-support equipment

Amazon’s safety instructions say its Smart Plug should not supply power to or control the on/off status of medical or life-support equipment. This is an Amazon Smart Plug restriction; check the relevant plug and medical device instructions rather than generalizing it to all equipment. Amazon Smart Plug Safety & Compliance.

Do not plug a power strip into a smart plug unless the manual explicitly permits it

Amazon says not to connect a power strip to the Amazon Smart Plug, and TP-Link also cautions against using power strips with its products. A strip can put multiple devices behind one plug, making it harder to keep the total load within the smart plug’s limit. Follow the exact model’s instructions; do not treat a power strip as a way to add outlets to a smart plug. Amazon’s safety instructions and TP-Link Türkiye’s Tapo/Kasa guidance describe these product-specific cautions.

How to decide whether your appliance is suitable

  1. Identify the exact smart plug model. Find its rated current and wattage, regional voltage compatibility, and safety instructions.
  2. Check the appliance’s stated load and use requirements. For a motor, look for starting-current information; for an appliance that must remain powered, check whether remote switching is prohibited or could interrupt essential operation.
  3. Compare the requirements with the plug’s limits. Do not connect a load above the rating, and do not assume that a compatible running-watt figure covers motor startup.
  4. Check for explicit prohibitions. Follow any model-specific warning about heaters, unattended use, continuous power, extensions, or power strips.
  5. If the instructions leave a safety-critical question unanswered, do not use the smart plug for that appliance. Consult the plug or appliance manufacturer for guidance on the exact models.

TP-Link Türkiye’s guidance gives “Heater | 10A | 2300W” as an example in its product-use context. Those figures are not a universal smart plug rating or a general limit for heaters; use the specifications for your own model and electrical region. TP-Link Türkiye’s Tapo/Kasa FAQ.
