Network redundancy gives traffic another route or component when part of a network fails. Failover is the process of detecting that failure and moving traffic to the alternate. It can turn a disruption into a brief blip—but only if the alternate is independent, ready, adequately sized, and activated quickly enough for the service using it. A second connection alone does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
What network redundancy and failover mean
Redundancy means adding alternate components, paths, or capacity so a service can continue when a primary part fails. It should cover the critical end-to-end path, not just one cable or device.

Failover is the changeover: detect an unhealthy primary, select a healthy alternate, and redirect traffic or requests. Failback is the later return to the original primary. Failback may require reconciling application state and can take longer than the initial switch.

What determines whether a failure feels like a blip?
There is no universal failover time. Recovery depends on the topology, health-check thresholds, routing behavior, application tolerance, and the type of failure. AWS describes failover time as the combined time to detect a failure, enable secondary connectivity, and notify the rest of the network of the change (AWS reliability guidance for hybrid connectivity).
- Detection: The system must recognize that the primary is unhealthy. AWS cites mechanisms such as DPD for VPN connections and BFD for Direct Connect.
- Activation: A standby connection or physical resource may need to be enabled or configured. An always-active alternate can be ready sooner than one that must be brought online.
- Routing: Network devices and routing protocols must learn the new path. Configuration and route convergence affect when traffic actually uses it.
- Application and client behavior: Existing sessions may not survive a path change. DNS time-to-live settings and client caching can also delay recovery after requests are redirected, as Microsoft explains in its ExpressRoute FAQ.
A switch is a blip only if the whole service recovers within the interruption its users and applications can tolerate. Do not describe failover as “instant” or “seamless” unless documentation for the specific service supports that claim.
Check whether the backup is truly independent
Two connections can still share a failure point. For example, separate links may use the same provider, fiber route, edge device, power source, building entrance, or peering location. If that shared component fails, both paths may disappear together.

Map the failure domains that matter to your service and check whether each primary and alternate actually separates them:
- Link and device: Are the connections on separate cables and edge devices?
- Power and facility: Do they depend on different power systems or buildings?
- Provider and route: Are providers and physical fiber paths diverse, or do they converge upstream?
- Location: Would a site, availability-zone, or regional failure take out both paths?
These are different levels of protection: a second link may cover a cable or device fault, while separate facilities or regions address broader failures. Geographic spread can reduce shared risk, but it does not remove the need to verify routing, capacity, and application behavior.
Choose an operating model that fits the recovery need
In an active-active design, multiple paths carry traffic during normal operation. If one fails, the others may continue serving traffic, provided routing works and the surviving paths have enough capacity.

In an active-passive or standby design, a secondary path is held for failover. Confirm whether it is always ready, what activates it, and whether it can carry the expected workload. A backup that is undersized or requires lengthy manual setup may not protect the service as intended.
These models are not interchangeable guarantees. The right choice depends on which failures you need to cover, the recovery target, the capacity available after a failure, and the cost and operational effort you can support.
Plan capacity and recovery targets for the whole service
A backup should be able to carry the traffic it is expected to handle. If the primary fails and the alternate becomes congested, users may still experience slowdowns or an outage. Check peak demand, not only typical usage, and account for any performance or latency changes caused by routing traffic across locations.

Define recovery objectives at the service level:
- Recovery time objective (RTO): the target time for restoring service.
- Recovery point objective (RPO): the amount of data loss the service can tolerate.
A network-path change alone does not necessarily lose application data, but stateful services or coordinated failover between regions can have data implications. Set objectives for the complete service rather than treating a cable switch as the whole recovery plan.

More paths and geographic spread can lower exposure to some failures, but they also add cost and management complexity. AWS recommends geographically separate facilities, dynamically routed active-active connections, BGP for automatic failover, and regular testing in its physical-location redundancy guidance. These are AWS design examples, not universal requirements for every network. Microsoft’s ExpressRoute guidance likewise gives service-specific examples such as active-active connectivity, multiple peering locations, provider diversity, a site-to-site VPN backup, monitoring, and reliability testing (ExpressRoute redundancy guidance).

What availability figures can—and cannot—tell you
AWS illustrates the relationship between availability percentages and annual downtime in its hybrid connectivity whitepaper: 99% corresponds to 3.65 days, 99.9% to 8.77 hours, and 99.99% to 52.6 minutes. These are illustrative calculations on an undated AWS page accessed in 2026, not measured incident rates or a guarantee for a particular network. The reviewed guidance does not establish how often redundancy turns an outage into a blip.
For a small network, a dual-WAN router can be one way to connect two internet services. Two WAN ports do not, by themselves, establish that the providers, power, devices, or physical routes are independent. Check the actual connections and the router’s supported failover behavior rather than assuming the port count is proof of resilience.
