Start by reseating both ends, then test a different cable and network port before changing drivers or resetting Windows. These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; some Settings labels vary by version.
What “Network cable unplugged” means
The warning means Windows is not seeing an active wired connection on that network adapter. It does not prove the cable is bad: the connector, computer jack, router or switch port, adapter, or driver could be involved. Check the cable and ports first
Reseat both ends
- Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer and the router, modem, or switch.
- Check the plugs and jacks for debris, visible damage, or a loose fit. Make sure the connector’s retaining clip is not broken.
- Reconnect both ends firmly. If you use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter or dock, check that connection as well.

Swap one physical part at a time
- Try a known-good Ethernet cable, leaving the same computer and network port in place.
- If the warning remains, reconnect the cable and try another router or switch port.
- If your computer has more than one Ethernet jack, test the other jack.
- When possible, test the original cable with another device. Change only one item per test so you can tell which change affects the link.
Visible damage or a failed cross-test can implicate a cable, but testing a different port also checks whether the network equipment is involved. (ASUS Support; Dell Support)

Use another device to narrow down the cause
Connect another computer or device to the same network equipment, ideally using the same cable and port. Interpret the results as clues, not proof:
- More than one device fails through the same network equipment: check the router, modem, or switch, and contact your internet provider if the equipment or service may be at fault.
- Other devices work on the same cable and port: focus on the affected computer’s Ethernet adapter, jack, or driver.
- The result changes when you swap only the cable or port: investigate the part you changed rather than assuming the computer is faulty.
Check Ethernet and the adapter in Windows
Confirm the wired connection is enabled
Check Windows’ network settings to make sure Ethernet has not been disabled. Settings organization and labels can differ between Windows 10 and 11, so search Settings for “Ethernet” if you do not see the option where expected.

Look for the adapter in Device Manager
Open Device Manager and check whether the Ethernet adapter appears. If it is listed but has a problem, the driver may need attention. If it is missing, that alone does not establish hardware failure: the device might be disabled or its driver may be missing. Dell also advises checking whether onboard LAN is enabled in BIOS when appropriate for the computer. (Dell Support)

Search Windows Settings for “Network troubleshooter” or “Network Adapter troubleshooter.” Menu paths change across Windows versions. A Microsoft Q&A volunteer suggested Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters on March 4, 2025; treat that as community guidance, since the exact path may not match every installation. Update or reinstall the Ethernet driver carefully
If the adapter is present but the physical checks did not restore link, get the Ethernet driver from the computer manufacturer’s support page for your exact model. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different model. If the issue began after a Windows or driver update, note when it started and use the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance.
Manufacturer instructions may offer an uninstall-and-reinstall route. ASUS describes uninstalling the adapter and scanning for hardware changes; Dell describes uninstalling the device and restarting Windows so it can reinstall. When to use Network reset
Keep Network reset for after you have checked the cable, ports, adapter, and driver. It restarts the PC and resets network configuration, so it changes more than a cable swap or reseat. Windows labels and navigation can vary; search Settings for “Network reset” to find the option available on your version. (ASUS Support; Dell Support)

When to consider an adapter or repair
If the same PC still shows no link with a known-good cable and a known-good router or switch port, the computer’s jack, onboard adapter, dock, or USB-to-Ethernet adapter may need further diagnosis or service. Persistent failure across those tests is a reason to contact the computer manufacturer or a repair professional, not definitive proof of a particular failed part.

A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can help test a suspected built-in port or provide Ethernet to a computer without a jack. It will not fix a faulty router port or an unrelated driver issue; check that the adapter’s connector type and Windows compatibility suit your computer. (ASUS Support; Dell Support)
