Netflix’s “Biggest Acquisition” Was the Roald Dahl Story Company—but the Price Was Never Revealed

Netflix announced on September 22, 2021—not in 2026—that it had acquired The Roald Dahl Story Company. The company did not disclose the purchase price, so the deal cannot be verified as Netflix’s largest acquisition by dollar value. Netflix framed it instead as a major expansion of its story and character universe across entertainment formats.

What Netflix acquired

The transaction was an acquisition of The Roald Dahl Story Company, the business responsible for protecting and commercializing Dahl’s stories and characters—not simply a license to make a handful of adaptations. Its well-known story worlds include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Twits and James and the Giant Peach, as well as characters such as Willy Wonka. Netflix’s announcement said the books had sold more than 300 million copies worldwide and been translated into 63 languages; those were Netflix and the company’s figures as of 2021, not current totals.

Netflix said the announcement was global, but that does not mean every adaptation, book, stage production, product or game became exclusive to Netflix in every territory. The company also anticipated continuing to work with existing rights holders, publishers, theater partners and other entertainment companies. Ownership of the story company and the rights for a specific production or market are not necessarily the same thing.

How much did Netflix pay, and what does “biggest” mean?

The official announcement did not disclose a purchase price, valuation, payment structure or closing date. It said the transaction remained subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Without a disclosed financial value, the claim that this was Netflix’s biggest acquisition by dollar amount cannot be confirmed.

The more defensible reading is that “biggest” describes the scope of the intellectual property and Netflix’s ambition to build a broad, multi-format story universe around it. Netflix called its 2017 purchase of Millarworld its first-ever acquisition, but it did not disclose those terms either. Netflix’s Millarworld announcement therefore offers context, not a financial comparison.

Why the deal mattered to Netflix

Netflix was pursuing more than individual screen adaptations. It said the Dahl catalog could support animated and live-action films and series, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theater, consumer products and brand partnerships. The strategy was to develop recognizable characters and stories across formats rather than treat each adaptation as an isolated title.

The catalog’s global recognition and long history across generations made it suited to that approach. That is a strategic interpretation of the company’s plans, not a promise that every property would become a recurring franchise or appear in every format. Netflix’s announcement set out an ambition, not a completed slate.

The acquisition also sat within a wider effort to own or build parts of its entertainment pipeline. Netflix acquired Millarworld for comics-based intellectual property; it announced the acquisition of game developer Night School Studio in September 2021; and it announced the Scanline VFX acquisition in November 2021 to strengthen visual-effects production. These were distinct moves involving story rights, game development and production capability, respectively. Night School Studio announcement · Scanline VFX announcement

The partnership began before the acquisition

The Dahl deal was not the start of Netflix’s relationship with the company. Netflix said the partnership had begun three years earlier, with work on animated television series based on Dahl’s writing. When the acquisition was announced, Taika Waititi and Phil Johnston were working on a series set in the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Netflix was also working with Sony and Working Title on Matilda The Musical. Those were projects in progress at the time, not evidence that every announced plan was completed or that each resulted from the acquisition itself.

What Netflix planned—and what later announcements show

Netflix described a portfolio spanning animation, live action, publishing, games, immersive experiences, theater and consumer products. This broad plan could allow stories to reach audiences beyond streaming, but a stated format or franchise ambition should not be mistaken for a released project.

In a later announcement, Netflix said the animated film The Twits was scheduled for 2025 and connected it to the company’s broader Dahl-universe plans. That shows continued development after the acquisition; it does not establish that every proposed project was made or that every Dahl property is available on Netflix. The deal’s significance—and its limits

The acquisition marked a substantial attempt to secure and develop a recognizable body of intellectual property, not proof that Netflix had become the sole rights holder for every Dahl work and use. Existing agreements, partners and territory-specific rights can shape what gets adapted, published, staged or sold, and where. Netflix’s global framing referred to the acquisition announcement, not uniform availability of every related title or product.

The stories’ family appeal also does not make Dahl’s legacy uncomplicated. The author’s public record and language in some original texts have drawn criticism; older editions, later editorial revisions and screen adaptations are separate matters. The acquisition announcement said Netflix aimed to preserve the stories’ spirit while reaching new audiences, but it does not establish that Netflix revised or censored every book or adaptation.

Ultimately, the deal is best understood as an ambitious IP strategy whose financial scale remains undisclosed. It aimed to give Netflix a deeper role in developing Dahl’s characters across media while leaving specific rights, partnerships and project outcomes dependent on separate arrangements.
