The feature Apple positioned as a major part of macOS Sequoia—Apple Intelligence—was not included when Sequoia launched on September 16, 2024. The first Apple Intelligence features for Mac arrived later, in macOS Sequoia 15.1, on October 28, 2024. The delay was about Apple’s AI features, not the operating system as a whole.
What Apple Intelligence was supposed to add to Sequoia
Apple Intelligence was a collection of AI features integrated into macOS, rather than a single new Siri feature. In its June 2024 preview, Apple presented it as one of Sequoia’s headline additions. The planned capabilities included Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text; a more capable Siri; and AI features in apps such as Mail, Messages, Photos, and Notes. Apple’s overview is in its macOS Sequoia announcement.
- Writing Tools: Rewrite, proofread, or summarize selected text.
- Siri: Improved language understanding and the ability to maintain context between requests.
- Summaries: Condensed notifications and content in apps including Mail and Messages.
- Photos and image creation: Clean Up to remove distractions from photos, alongside Image Playground and Genmoji.
- Notes: Transcription summaries for recorded audio.
These capabilities did not all arrive at once. Apple described the October release as the first set of Apple Intelligence features, with additional capabilities to follow in later software updates.
What launched on September 16, 2024
macOS Sequoia 15.0 was available on September 16, 2024. Apple’s launch announcement listed substantial changes that did not depend on Apple Intelligence, including:

When Apple Intelligence arrived on Mac
The first Apple Intelligence features became available on October 28, 2024, through macOS Sequoia 15.1. Apple released the first set across Mac, iPhone, and iPad in macOS Sequoia 15.1, iOS 18.1, and iPadOS 18.1. The initial release was described as a beta, not the complete set of capabilities Apple had previewed. See Apple’s October 28 availability announcement.

Apple established the timing and staged rollout, but did not give a detailed technical reason for why the features missed Sequoia 15.0. Claims that the delay was caused by unfinished Siri work, server capacity, regulatory review, or a particular engineering problem should not be treated as confirmed explanations.
Which Macs can use Apple Intelligence?
Running macOS Sequoia does not by itself make a Mac compatible with Apple Intelligence. Apple’s current compatibility and setup guidance requires an Apple silicon Mac with an M1 chip or later. Intel Macs that support Sequoia are excluded from Apple Intelligence.

- Mac hardware: Apple silicon, M1 or later.
- Software: macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later for the first Sequoia-era features; individual capabilities can require later updates.
- Storage: Apple currently lists approximately 7 GB of available device storage for Apple Intelligence models. This is a current support requirement, not a measurement of the space Sequoia 15.1 itself required at launch.
- Language and region: Device and Siri languages must meet Apple’s supported-language conditions, and availability can vary by region and feature.
At the October 2024 launch, Apple said the first features were available in most regions when both the device and Siri were set to U.S. English. Support expanded over time, so that launch condition should not be mistaken for the current language list. Apple also notes that changing Siri’s language can temporarily make Apple Intelligence unavailable while the new language downloads and until it matches the device language.
A compatible chip and operating-system version are necessary, but not a guarantee that every Apple Intelligence feature is available in every language or region. Check Apple’s current support page for the feature you want before relying on it.

Should you upgrade or buy a different Mac?
| Situation | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| You already have an M-series Mac | Install a compatible macOS update if Apple Intelligence features matter to you, and check language, region, and available storage. |
| You have an Intel Mac that can run Sequoia | You can use Sequoia’s non-AI features, but upgrading macOS will not enable Apple Intelligence on that Mac. |
| You are choosing between an Intel Mac and Apple silicon | Apple silicon is the relevant platform if Apple Intelligence is a buying requirement. Consider memory, storage, portability, and workload too; M1-or-later compatibility does not mean every model performs the same. |
| You are outside a supported language or region | Do not assume the feature will appear just because the hardware qualifies. Check Apple’s current availability information for your language, region, and intended feature. |
| Your Mac has little free storage | Make space before enabling Apple Intelligence; Apple currently lists approximately 7 GB of available device storage for its models. |
Apple Intelligence was not a prerequisite for using Sequoia. If iPhone Mirroring, Passwords, Safari changes, or the other 15.0 additions are useful, an Intel Mac owner could still have reasons to install Sequoia—just not to gain Apple Intelligence. Apple described many Apple Intelligence models as running on-device and said Private Cloud Compute handles requests requiring cloud resources; that is Apple’s stated privacy architecture, not a claim that all processing happens locally.

“Won’t be available at launch” described the situation before Sequoia’s September 2024 release. Apple Intelligence subsequently arrived on compatible Macs with Sequoia 15.1 on October 28, 2024. As of August 2026, the useful distinction is not whether Sequoia launched without it, but whether a particular Mac, language, region, and software version support the Apple Intelligence feature you want.
