If Netflix subtitles won’t turn on, first open Audio & Subtitles in the playback controls and select an available language. If your language is missing, check the profile and whether the title is downloaded; if it is selected but invisible or intermittent, test another device and follow the troubleshooting steps for that device.
First, identify what is going wrong
Different subtitle symptoms have different causes. Check whether you cannot find the playback controls, your preferred language is missing, subtitles are selected but invisible, or they appear only sometimes. Also note whether the problem affects one title or several, one language or all languages, and one device or multiple devices. Netflix says selected subtitles that are invisible or intermittent during otherwise successful playback may indicate a device issue (Netflix Help Center: “Subtitles won’t turn on”).

Open the subtitle controls
- Start playing the title.
- Open the player controls: tap the screen on a phone or tablet, or click the screen on a computer; on most TVs and streaming devices, press the remote’s up or down arrow; on Apple TV, swipe up or press the up arrow.
- Choose Audio & Subtitles, then select a listed subtitle language. Choose Other if it appears and you want to see additional choices. On some TVs, language choices appear along the bottom of the screen without the same icon.
The exact control layout varies by device. See Netflix’s instructions for using subtitles, captions, and audio languages.

If your preferred language is missing
Check the profile’s language preferences
Netflix language preferences are set by profile, so make sure you are using the profile whose settings you want to change. The route varies across the website, phone or tablet, and TV. Netflix’s language settings guide provides device-specific directions. On a TV, Netflix’s guide says to start a title, pause it, open the player controls, select Other, and choose languages for audio and subtitles.

Check whether the title is downloaded
Netflix shows the two most relevant languages for a downloaded title. If you are connected to Wi-Fi and the title is downloaded, delete that download and reopen the language chooser; more options may then appear. This is particularly worth checking if the language is available for the title when streamed but absent from its download.
Allow for title, location, and licensing limits
A language may be unavailable because of your location, profile preferences, the specific title, device support, content licensing, or agreements with the show’s creators. A language track may also be missing from an episode or season that is still being released on a rolling or weekly schedule. Check another title in the same language: if it has subtitles, the issue may be limited to the title or release rather than your general settings. Netflix explains these availability factors in its language availability guidance.

If the language is listed but subtitles do not appear
Play the same title and language on another device. If subtitles work there, the first device may not support that language. Netflix notes that some devices manufactured before 2014 may not support Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, or Vietnamese subtitles. Netflix describes 2014 as a general guide, not a firm cutoff; a newer device may also lack support (Netflix Help Center).

On an Android device
Netflix’s Android troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether your network can play Netflix, restoring any changed connection settings to their defaults, and improving Wi-Fi signal. Custom modem settings, VPN or proxy settings, and DNS settings can affect the connection. Try moving the device closer to the router and placing the router in an open, elevated spot. If the problem remains, ask your internet service provider to check for outages, router or modem problems, or network settings. Follow Netflix’s subtitle troubleshooting steps.

- Reconnect the modem. Wait until its indicator lights stop blinking.
- If you have a separate router, reconnect it and wait for its indicator lights to settle.
- Turn the TV on, reopen Netflix, and try the title again.
These are Netflix’s restart instructions for smart TVs; they are not a universal sequence for every device (Netflix Help Center). For other device types, Netflix directs users to contact support rather than giving the same device-specific steps.
If subtitles are on but hard to read
Appearance settings affect readability and style, not whether a language is available. In a web browser, go to Account > Profiles > [your profile] > Subtitle appearance, adjust the font, size, shadow, or background color, and save. Then reopen Netflix. On a TV or streaming device, Netflix says to use Settings > Get Help > Reload for changes made on the web to take effect. Some devices provide fewer appearance controls, and some do not support appearance changes for certain languages. See Netflix’s subtitle appearance instructions.

When profile preferences seem to reset
Subtitle and audio preferences are not saved for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile. If a preferred audio language keeps resetting, Netflix suggests playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes so the preference can be saved. These profile behaviors are described in Netflix’s subtitle and audio instructions.
