Netflix Screen Fit: Fix Zoom and Cropping on Your TV

Use your TV’s picture settings to correct a zoomed Netflix image. Learn when black bars are intentional and what to check for small or off-center playback.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Netflix looks zoomed in or cuts off the edges on your Smart TV, open the TV’s picture settings and look for Aspect Ratio, Picture Size, Zoom, or Screen Fit. Choose the normal or original picture setting, or a fit-to-screen option if your TV offers one. Menu names and paths vary by TV model, so there is no universal sequence for every Smart TV. Netflix recommends checking the TV’s picture settings when its image appears zoomed (Netflix Help Center).

First, identify what the picture is doing

The right fix depends on whether Netflix is cropped, has black bars, appears small or off-center, or will not open at all. Also note whether you are using the Netflix app built into the TV or an external player connected by HDMI.

What you see What to check
Picture is enlarged or edges are missing TV aspect ratio, picture size, zoom, or screen-fit setting (Netflix Help Center)
Black bars, but the full picture is visible Whether that title was filmed in a wider format than the TV screen (Netflix Help Center)
Picture is small or off-center Device-specific Netflix troubleshooting steps (Netflix Help Center)
Netflix plays through a separate Roku or streaming player HDMI connection, port, and cable, as well as the TV picture setting (Netflix Help Center)
Netflix app is unavailable Whether the TV or streaming device model is still supported (Netflix Help Center)

Fix a zoomed or cropped Netflix picture

  1. While Netflix is showing the affected picture, open the TV’s Settings or Menu.
  2. Go to the picture or display controls. Look for a setting named Aspect Ratio, Picture Size, Screen Size, Zoom, or Screen Fit; the label and location depend on the manufacturer and model.
  3. Switch from a zoomed or enlarged mode to the normal/original aspect ratio, or choose a screen-fit option if available.
  4. Return to Netflix and check whether the edges and full image are visible. If the setting is unclear or unavailable, use the TV manufacturer’s instructions for that model.

Netflix notes that a TV’s aspect ratio, screen size, or other picture settings can make Netflix appear zoomed in (Netflix Help Center). If Netflix is running on a Fire TV or Fire TV Stick and the whole interface or image is magnified, check Settings > Accessibility and turn off Screen Magnifier if it is enabled.

When black bars are normal

If the picture is centered, the entire scene is visible, and black bars appear only on certain movies or shows, the TV may be displaying the title in its original wide format. Netflix explains that the bars can preserve the full image rather than stretch it to fill the screen. Zooming in to remove them may cut off the left and right sides (Netflix Help Center).

If the picture is small or off-center

A small or displaced image is different from a zoomed picture. Netflix says this can mean stored information on the device needs refreshing, and directs viewers to follow the troubleshooting steps for their specific device (Netflix Help Center). Use the instructions for your TV model rather than applying a reset sequence intended for another device.

If Netflix runs through a Roku or another external player

These connection checks apply when Netflix is playing on an external device connected to the TV, not when you are using the TV’s built-in Netflix app. For Roku, Netflix recommends checking the HDMI path:

If the Netflix app is unavailable

A screen-fit adjustment cannot restore an app that the device no longer supports. Netflix says it may no longer be available on some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015. Check Netflix’s supported-device information for your exact model and region (Netflix Help Center).
