To use Netflix on an iPhone, install the app from the App Store, sign in, and choose a profile. You can stream or download eligible titles for offline viewing, but availability depends on your iOS version, device, plan, and the individual title. Here’s how to set it up and control playback without assuming every feature works on every iPhone.
Install Netflix and check iPhone compatibility
Netflix’s currently published iPhone and iPad requirements say the latest app version requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Netflix also says someone who previously downloaded the app may be able to redownload it on iOS 12 or later. That legacy option is not the same as support for the latest app or every feature. Check the App Store listing for your device before relying on it.

- Open the App Store and search for Netflix.
- Tap Get or the cloud download icon.
- Open Netflix and sign in to your account.
- Choose a profile to start browsing.
Installation and download eligibility have different requirements: Netflix’s guide says downloads generally work on iOS 12 or later, while titles in the ad-supported experience require iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. These requirements can change.
Stream a title and adjust playback
Choose a movie or episode and start playback. Tap the screen to reveal the player controls, including options for subtitles and audio. Selecting a subtitle track changes what you see during playback; it does not necessarily change the visual style of captions. Netflix directs Apple-device users to Apple Support for subtitle appearance settings, rather than providing an iPhone-specific appearance route.

Picture-in-picture
Netflix says picture-in-picture is available only on certain iPhone and iPad models and on ad-free plans. Support is not universal, so check your device and plan rather than assuming the Netflix app alone guarantees a floating video window.
Resolution and HDR
Netflix’s current help guide identifies iPhone X and later among models that support Full HD 1080p, and iPhone 8 and later among models that support HDR. These are Netflix’s published device cutoffs, not a guarantee that every title or playback session uses those formats. Low Power Mode or cellular use can prevent HDR playback even when a title is labeled HDR.

Spatial Audio
Netflix lists Spatial Audio as requiring iOS or iPadOS 14.6 or later, a compatible device, the Premium plan, and AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. Downloaded titles play in stereo rather than Spatial Audio. This is an optional listening feature, not a requirement for watching Netflix.

Turn off autoplay for the next episode
Netflix describes the setting this way: “You can set Netflix to automatically play the next episode in a series.” The control is profile-specific. Labels or routes may change as Netflix updates the app.

- Open Netflix and select a profile.
- Tap My Netflix, then tap the profile name.
- Tap Manage Profiles and choose the profile to change.
- Turn off Autoplay Next Episode, then tap Done.
If the setting does not appear to update, Netflix suggests switching to another profile and back, or signing out and back in.
Download Netflix movies and shows for offline viewing
Downloads are saved on the device used to download them, not automatically shared across your devices. They are title-specific: Netflix does not make every movie or show downloadable, and downloads can expire. Some titles also have annual download limits.

- Find a movie or episode and look for its Download icon. You can also browse the app’s download area for eligible titles.
- Tap the icon to download a movie or an individual episode.
- When offline, open the app’s Downloads area and select the saved title.
If a title has no Download icon, Netflix says it is not available for download. A download can expire after a period; check the Downloads area for the title’s status. Netflix’s download guidance describes up to 100 active downloads per device for plan-dependent terms. Do not treat that as a universal limit across plans or regions; check the current terms for your account.

- Update the Netflix app from the App Store.
- Check for the latest iOS or iPadOS version available for your device.
- If the issue remains, consider reinstalling Netflix.
Reinstalling removes downloads stored on the iPhone and signs you out. Before doing it, make sure you can sign back in. If Netflix shows an error code, search Netflix Help for that exact code rather than applying a generic fix.
Use an external display or compatible accessories
Netflix says iPhone and iPad video output is supported through certain compatible Apple connection kits, but its guide does not provide a model-by-model adapter list. Check compatibility for your exact iPhone and connection kit before buying an accessory. For Spatial Audio, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max are options only when the device, software, and plan requirements are also met.
