They target different bottlenecks, not a single shared one. NetApp says Novus is designed to scale storage throughput and metadata for AI factories; Keystone Sovereign adds controls around data location, access and support jurisdiction. The announcements describe intended capabilities, not proof that every deployment will reach the headline performance claims.
What NetApp announced at Insight 2026
NetApp Insight ran in Las Vegas from September 29 to October 1, 2026. The announcements included Novus, expanded AI Data Engine capabilities and Keystone Sovereign, a sovereignty-focused addition to the Keystone storage-as-a-service offering.

The distinction matters: Novus is aimed at the flow and management of data at scale, while Keystone Sovereign is aimed at governance and operational control. They may be relevant to the same AI program, but one does not replace the other.

What Novus is designed to change
NetApp’s premise is that GPUs can sit idle when storage cannot deliver data quickly enough. The company says GPU utilization can drop below 30 percent in that situation. That figure describes the problem NetApp identifies; it is not a reported Novus benchmark or a universal utilization rate for AI systems.
#1 Best Overall
Novus separates metadata services from the data path. NetApp says this lets metadata, bandwidth and capacity scale independently while remaining under one namespace. In principle, that targets two related constraints: moving data fast enough to keep accelerators busy and handling the metadata activity involved in very large file systems and GPU environments.
NetApp describes Novus as exceeding 100 TB/s of aggregate throughput and supporting a zettabyte-scale file system. These are vendor claims about the architecture’s scale, not evidence that a particular customer workload has achieved those results. The announcement material does not establish the configuration, workload, measurement method or deployment conditions behind those headline figures.

What Keystone Sovereign adds
Keystone Sovereign is an add-on to NetApp Keystone storage as a service. Its reported controls include European-based support and escalation, European-controlled access management, and clearer documentation of telemetry and data flows. Initial pilots were reported for Germany and France.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Those controls address questions such as where data and operational control reside, who can access systems, and which jurisdiction governs support. They do not describe a throughput architecture and should not be read as a performance upgrade to Novus. The reported pilot locations also do not establish general availability across Europe or elsewhere.

How the two offerings differ
| Decision area | Novus | Keystone Sovereign |
|---|---|---|
| Primary bottleneck | Storage throughput, metadata concurrency and scale for AI environments (NetApp launch material) | Data sovereignty, operational access and support jurisdiction (NetApp event coverage) |
| Approach described | Metadata services separated from the data path; independent scaling under one namespace (NetApp launch material) | European-based support and escalation, European-controlled access management, and clearer telemetry and data-flow documentation (reported event coverage) |
| Headline scale or geography | More than 100 TB/s aggregate throughput and zettabyte-scale file system are NetApp claims; workload and test conditions are not stated in the launch material | Initial pilots reported in Germany and France; broader availability is not stated in event coverage |
| Evidence described | Vendor architecture and performance claims; no broad independent customer benchmark was found in the event coverage | Reported controls and initial pilots; no regulator or standards-body finding was reported |
| Deployment and commercial terms | Not stated in the cited launch material | Not stated in the cited event coverage |
Are the 100 TB/s and zettabyte claims proven?
They are claims made by NetApp, not independently established production results in the event coverage. The cited Omdia work is described in NetApp’s announcement as observed testing and modeling. That provenance is relevant, but it is not the same as a broad, independent customer benchmark with published workload details and reproducible conditions.
Accordingly, the figures are useful as indicators of the scale NetApp says Novus is designed to address. They should not be treated as expected performance for an arbitrary installation. Buyers evaluating the claims need the actual test configuration, workload profile, concurrency, data and metadata mix, and measurement methodology for a deployment comparable to their own.
What to evaluate before treating them as a solution
Start with the specific constraint in the AI environment. A system waiting on storage has a different problem from one blocked by unclear access rules or unsuitable support jurisdiction. Both can matter in the same program, but the remedy should be evaluated against the relevant constraint.
- Throughput and GPU feeding: Ask how aggregate throughput was measured and whether it applies to the workload, concurrency and deployment scale under consideration. Compare observed end-to-end behavior, not just a peak aggregate figure.
- Metadata scaling: Validate performance for the file counts, access patterns and parallel activity expected in the environment. Novus’s separation of metadata services from the data path is an architectural description; the announcement alone does not quantify results for a particular workload.
- Namespace and capacity: Confirm how the single-namespace design behaves at the intended scale and what operational limits or prerequisites apply. A zettabyte-scale design claim does not itself establish that a deployment can use that capacity.
- Multi-tenancy and deployment model: Establish how separate teams or workloads are isolated and managed, and what deployment options and service boundaries apply. These details are not established by the headline announcements.
- Sovereignty controls: For Keystone Sovereign, verify the actual geography of support and escalation, who administers access controls, what telemetry is collected, and how data flows are documented for the specific service arrangement.
- Geography and availability: Treat Germany and France as reported initial pilot locations, not a complete availability map. Obtain confirmation for the required country and the applicable service terms.
- Evidence quality: Request test data or customer evidence that identifies workload, configuration, conditions and measurement method. Distinguish vendor-reported testing or modeling from independent, customer-scale results.
Where AI Data Engine fits
NetApp also described expanded AI Data Engine capabilities for discovering heterogeneous data. Data visibility and readiness can constrain AI projects even when storage throughput is sufficient: teams need to find and understand the data they intend to use. The event coverage also described a six-month no-cost data-mapping offer. Its current eligibility and terms are not established here, so organizations should confirm them with NetApp before relying on the offer.
