It is a network-visibility tool—not a password cracker or a general-purpose wireless attack detector. Its documentation distinguishes it from packet analyzers and firewall appliances, describing its focus as asset discovery, change detection, historical tracking, and automation. NetAlertX documentation describes the project’s purpose and capabilities.
What can NetAlertX tell you about your Wi-Fi network?
NetAlertX builds a device inventory and tracks changes over time. Depending on your configuration and what your network makes visible, it can help answer practical questions such as:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Which devices have been detected on the network?
- Has a new or unfamiliar device appeared?
- When was a device last seen, and is it currently present?
- Has a device’s IP or MAC address changed?
- Are monitored services offline?
Discovery and imports can use methods and sources including ARP, DHCP, SNMP, and compatible controllers. The documentation also describes importing device information from DHCP servers, Pi-hole, and UniFi controllers, along with notifications and automation integrations. What appears in your inventory depends on the chosen discovery method, network topology, and configuration. See the feature documentation for the supported visibility and integration capabilities.

Can it identify an unknown device on your home network?
It can flag a device that has appeared in the monitored network inventory, which gives you a lead to investigate. An unfamiliar entry is not proof of an intruder: it may belong to a device you forgot about, a device with a changed address, or a device detected differently after a configuration change. Likewise, an empty or unchanged inventory does not prove that every device has been found.

- Cutting-Edge, latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology. Dual-Band 2.4GHz(150Mbps) and 5GHz(433Mbps) Performance to prevent network freezing and lags when streaming and gaming online
- High-Sensitivity Dual-Band external antenna optimizes signal for more coverage
- Compact design, saving space without blocking other USB peripherals on your laptop/desktop computer
- Driver support for Windows XP/ Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10, Apple MacOS 10.4 to 10.12 and Linux
Use the inventory as one source of visibility, then check your router or controller’s connected-device list and compare entries with the devices you recognize. A missing device can be caused by the scan method, permissions, configuration, or network layout—not necessarily by the device being offline.
Can NetAlertX detect a rogue access point?
The official plugin overview lists WIFICANARY for passive Wi-Fi rogue-AP and evil-twin detection. That description supports a specific defensive use case, but it does not establish that the plugin cracks Wi-Fi passwords, audits encryption, or detects every wireless attack. Consult the NetAlertX plugin list for the current plugin listing and details.

Why might a device be missing from a scan?
ARP discovery is limited by the network boundary
ARP discovery normally finds devices within the local Layer 2 broadcast domain. A device may respond to ping and still be invisible to an ARP scan if it sits behind a router, VPN, VLAN, Wi-Fi extender, or another separate broadcast domain. Reachability by ping and visibility to an ARP scanner are not the same thing.
Match the discovery source to the topology
When ARP does not cover the network you need, consider whether a DHCP server or SNMP-capable router can provide the relevant device data. NetAlertX’s remote-network guidance also describes subnet configuration and, for some separated networks, running multiple instances with synchronization. Which approach works depends on the router or controller, the available data, and the segments you need to monitor. Review the project’s remote-network guidance and choose a method that can actually see the devices in your layout.

The project also notes that Wi-Fi-only networks may need alternate scanners. Do not treat an ARP scan—or any single inventory—as a guarantee that no unknown device is present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you deploy it safely?
Use NetAlertX only on a network you own or have explicit authorization to monitor. Its security guidance says it is designed for private LANs, not the open internet. Protect access to its web interface and API, secure any remote access, keep the software updated, and do not expose the service directly to the internet without protection. Read the project’s security guidance before making it accessible beyond your local network.

The official Docker instructions describe a container deployment, but networking mode, subnet configuration, and scanning permissions vary with the discovery method. Follow the current installation instructions for your host and understand the permissions a scanner needs before deploying it; a copied command may grant more network access than you intend. The project says data is stored locally by default unless you configure external notifications or integrations. See the Docker and installation instructions for current setup details.

What NetAlertX is—and is not—for
- Useful for: building a network inventory, tracking device presence and address changes, reviewing last-seen history, and triggering notifications or integrations.
- Not a substitute for: a complete wireless security assessment, a packet analyzer, or a firewall.
- Best practice: combine its view with router or controller information, and investigate unfamiliar entries rather than treating a scan result as definitive.
