Start with the support deadline for each application, then assess compatibility and operational readiness before committing to a rollout.
What does the .NET support timetable mean for your decision?
Microsoft’s support-policy table, updated September 8, 2026, lists .NET 10 as an active LTS release. It lists .NET 8 and .NET 9 as reaching end of support on the same date, so teams on either version should account for the time needed to assess, migrate, test, and deploy.

| Release | Support status in Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 table | Patch listed | End of support |
|---|---|---|---|
| .NET 10 | Active LTS; original release November 11, 2025 | 10.0.12, released September 8, 2026 | November 14, 2028 |
| .NET 8 | LTS | Not stated in the table details summarized here | November 10, 2026 |
| .NET 9 | STS | Not stated in the table details summarized here | November 10, 2026 |
Use the later-updated support-policy date of November 14, 2028 for .NET 10 planning. Microsoft’s November 11, 2025 launch announcement gave November 10, 2028 as the expected end date; that earlier announcement should not be blended with the newer policy table. The .NET Team recommended that production applications upgrade to .NET 10, citing its support window, performance improvements, and new capabilities. That is the vendor team’s recommendation, not independent evidence of a particular application’s results.
Major .NET versions install side by side, and installing a new runtime does not automatically retarget an existing application. Patch updates are different: applications generally roll forward to the latest installed patch for their targeted major version by default. Microsoft says servicing updates ship monthly and include security and non-security fixes. Plan around the runtime your deployment actually supplies and the application’s deployment mode.

How should you assess an enterprise upgrade?
Make the decision application by application. Microsoft lists end of support, new operating-system support, and access to an important API, performance, or security feature as common upgrade reasons. For enterprise systems, also weigh contractual support commitments, compliance needs, dependency support, and release-window constraints.
- Record the starting point. For each service or application, capture its target framework, runtime deployment mode, operating system and architecture, hosting platform, dependencies, and support deadline. Include native libraries, build tools, platform-specific APIs, and direct and transitive packages.
- Classify the migration. Moving from a modern .NET release to .NET 10 is generally a target-framework, dependency, and compatibility exercise. Porting from .NET Framework may involve a different application model, project format, APIs, and technology choices; do not estimate it as the same kind of upgrade. Microsoft’s “Upgrade .NET apps overview” describes these distinct paths.
- Map breaking changes to application surfaces. Review the .NET 10 breaking-change catalogue alongside component-specific guidance, especially for ASP.NET Core and EF Core. Turn relevant changes into explicit code reviews and tests rather than treating a successful compile as proof of compatibility.
- Update the SDK, project, packages, and build pipeline. Install the SDK, update the target framework, build and resolve errors or warnings, restore workloads if required, pin the SDK where reproducibility matters, and update CI and developer environments. For hosted applications, coordinate runtime, container, cloud-hosting, and deployment-configuration changes.
- Validate the real deployment path. Test in the target operating system, architecture, runtime mode, and hosting environment. Exercise startup and shutdown, health checks, telemetry, security, integration contracts, and rollback procedures—not just local development.
- Pilot and stage the rollout. Start with a low-risk service or representative slice. Compare performance and load-test results with the current production baseline, then stage deployment and monitor errors, latency, resource use, and dependency behavior.
Which breaking changes deserve focused review?
Microsoft classifies .NET 10 breaking changes as binary incompatibilities, source incompatibilities, or behavioral changes. Its catalogue spans ASP.NET Core, containers, core libraries, cryptography, EF Core, globalization, interop, networking, reflection, SDK and MSBuild behavior, serialization, WinForms, and WPF.

- Solution files:
dotnet new slndefaults to the SLNX format. Confirm that IDEs and other build tools in use support the format.
These examples are not a complete inventory. Microsoft describes its .NET 10 breaking-change page as a work in progress and says it is not a complete list. Recheck it as implementation proceeds and review guidance for the specific frameworks and components your application uses.

What should ASP.NET Core teams change for a .NET 9-to-10 move?
For this specific migration, Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core guidance calls for an installed .NET 10 SDK, the net10.0 target framework, and aligned package versions. Apply the changes in a branch and verify that the SDK selector used by local builds and CI resolves to an installed SDK.

Standalone Blazor WebAssembly applications have an additional environment-configuration change: the old header and launchSettings environment variable no longer control the environment. Use WasmApplicationEnvironmentName instead.
What must change in hosting and deployment?
If the host supplies the runtime, install the .NET 10 runtime on that host. Update container FROM images and cloud-service configuration where applicable. Validate operating-system support and native dependencies: the supported lifetime of the operating system’s sponsor is part of the deployment picture, not just the .NET runtime’s own lifecycle.

Check whether the application is framework-dependent or self-contained, and verify its patch roll-forward behavior in the target environment. Test the actual container or host image, package feeds, startup and shutdown sequence, health checks, telemetry, and rollback process. Include CI version selectors and any SDK pinning in the change plan so production builds and developer builds use the intended toolchain.
How should you test before expanding the rollout?
A successful build establishes that the code compiles against the selected SDK; it does not establish that production behavior is unchanged. Choose tests that reflect the application’s contracts and failure modes.

Microsoft’s .NET 10 overview describes runtime optimization work, including JIT inlining, devirtualization, and stack-allocation improvements. It does not establish a performance gain for a particular enterprise application. Benchmark your own representative workload rather than planning around a promised percentage improvement.

Evaluate features against a concrete need in the application or roadmap. Microsoft’s overview highlights runtime and library work, expanded cryptography support, WebSocketStream, SDK and test tooling changes, ASP.NET Core enhancements, and C# 14.
- Testing and build workflows: The SDK supports Microsoft.Testing.Platform through
dotnet test, and console applications can produce container images. - Web applications: ASP.NET Core updates include changes across Blazor, OpenAPI, diagnostics, and Identity passkey support.
- Language and runtime: C# 14 and runtime improvements may matter where they address a specific engineering need, but their value depends on the codebase and workload.
Treat these as capabilities to assess, not benefits every application receives automatically. The .NET Team’s launch recommendation is a useful signal about Microsoft’s direction; the decision for an individual service still depends on compatibility, operational readiness, and measured results.

| Decision factor | Evidence to weigh | What it means for timing |
|---|---|---|
| Support urgency | Current runtime’s end-of-support date and the time required to migrate | A near deadline argues for beginning assessment and reserving rollout capacity promptly. |
| Compatibility scope | Application type, relevant breaking changes, and dependency support | A small, understood surface is easier to pilot; unresolved dependencies or a .NET Framework port can require a larger plan. |
| Operational readiness | SDK pinning, CI, package feeds, containers, host availability, and rollback | Upgrade only when the build and deployment path can be validated end to end. |
| Business value | Support and security requirements, or specific .NET 10 capabilities relevant to the workload | A concrete need can support earlier investment; generic performance expectations cannot substitute for measurement. |
| Validation capacity | Representative tests, deployment stages, observability, and performance baselines | If these are missing, establish them before broad production rollout. |
Which upgrade tools should teams consider?
Microsoft’s “Upgrade .NET apps overview” recommends GitHub Copilot app modernization for guided assessment, planning, and remediation, particularly for projects with many dependencies, Windows-specific APIs, or cloud and container goals. The overview also says .NET Upgrade Assistant is deprecated and no longer actively developed. Before adopting an AI-assisted tool, check its current requirements, data-handling implications, and fit with internal AI policies.
