NestJS Ledger Mismatches: Trace Status Changes and Reconcile Payments

A mutable transaction status hides how it changed. Pair sourced event history with scheduled processor reconciliation, durable exceptions, and idempotent writes.

The fix for a NestJS fintech backend whose internal totals did not match its payment processor was to stop treating transaction status as a single mutable fact. Preserve sourced status changes, then regularly reconcile internal transactions against processor records. Store discrepancies as durable exceptions and alert the people responsible for investigating them.

Why the backend’s numbers drifted

In a DEV article, author Peace Melodi describes finding that “the internal ledger and the payment processor’s own records were off by a small amount.” The account attributes the mismatch to transaction status being overwritten without retaining a record of how it changed. The article describes a few transactions and a few dollars, but gives no independently verified totals, sample size, or measured improvement; treat it as one author’s incident, not a general statistic.

A mutable field such as status = 'settled' shows the value now, but not which actor or system caused it, what value came before, or whether competing code paths tried to change it. As Melodi puts it, “The real fix was not patching each of those three code paths individually.” The approach was to preserve event history and add reconciliation against the processor.

What event history fixes—and what it cannot

Instead of erasing the previous state, record each transition as an event with fields such as transactionId, eventType, source, and createdAt. The application can derive a current status from the latest applicable event while retaining a trace of how it got there. For example, a payment event might record that a processor webhook reported settlement; a later event could record a reversal.

This sketch describes the basic idea, not a complete ledger implementation:

TransactionEvent: transactionId, eventType, source, createdAt

Event history improves provenance and investigation. It cannot reveal an external event the service never received, repair a discrepancy that existed before history was captured, or prove that concurrent writes were applied only once. The example also leaves ordering, duplicate-event handling, reversal policy, retention, access controls, and accounting invariants unspecified. Those require explicit design rather than inference from a timestamp or the latest row.

Use reconciliation to find drift

A scheduled reconciliation compares internal transaction records with the payment processor’s records on a recurring basis. That addresses a different failure mode from event history: it can surface missing or inconsistent data even when an event was never delivered to the application. Matching rules must reflect the processor’s identifiers, settlement timing, fees, refunds, and other domain-specific behavior; the incident account does not define those rules.

Do not make the job’s only output a log line. Persist each mismatch as an exception with enough context to investigate, and route an alert to an owner-visible channel. A useful exception workflow tracks what was compared, the discrepancy, its current investigation state, and who is responsible. That turns detection into an actionable queue rather than an invisible background check.

Make retries and concurrent writes safe

Event history and reconciliation do not prevent duplicate writes. Payment endpoints and background workflows can be retried, and concurrent requests can pass a status check before either has committed. NestJS’s official reliability guidance recommends stable idempotency keys for retried side effects and durable, shared storage with atomic operations. An in-memory key is insufficient across restarts or multiple application instances.

At the write boundary, scope a stable key to the relevant operation and enforce its uniqueness atomically. Keep a business-state check as well: idempotency identifies a repeated operation, while the business rule determines whether a transition is valid. Where a payment provider supports idempotency, pass a derived stable key to it too, so a failure after charging but before recording the response does not blindly create another charge.

Be explicit about transaction boundaries. An idempotency record and a business database update are not automatically one atomic transaction. For workflows with external effects, NestJS documentation notes that steps may run at least once; pass the stable step key to the external service. If starting the workflow must be coupled atomically to a business write, create the workflow record within that business transaction. Use the current ORM’s transaction guidance rather than copying an API example from the version 7 NestJS database documentation.

Choose a money representation deliberately

The mismatch diagnosis concerns status history and reconciliation; it does not establish that floating-point arithmetic caused the reported incident. Independently, binary floating point cannot represent many decimal fractions exactly, including values such as 0.1. A NestJS.io tutorial describes integer minor units for ordinary monetary values and fixed-precision numeric values where calculations need fractional minor units.

  • Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
  • Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.
  • Integer minor units: Store amounts as the smallest relevant currency unit for the operation. Choose a type with sufficient range for expected balances and enforce bounds; the tutorial’s bounded SQL integer example is not automatically suitable for large balances.
  • Fixed-precision numeric: Use an explicitly chosen precision and scale when the domain requires fractional minor units or calculations that cannot safely remain in integers.

Currency scale, rounding, and how fees or conversions are represented are domain decisions. PostgreSQL’s MONEY formatting and precision depend on locale, so it should not be chosen casually as a substitute for a documented representation policy.

Build a ledger, not just a status log

A status event stream is useful operational history, but a financial ledger needs stronger invariants than “latest event wins.” A public individual repository illustrates ideas such as immutable journal entries corrected by reversal entries, atomic materialized-balance updates, deterministic lock ordering, BigInt monetary arithmetic, and a transactional outbox. These are design examples from that repository, not independently validated requirements or performance results.

For a production system, define how each business operation affects balances, how corrections are represented, and what database constraints or transaction logic prevent partial or duplicate postings. Keep event provenance, accounting entries, and materialized balances conceptually distinct: they answer different questions and may require different consistency checks.

A practical repair sequence

  1. Define valid transitions. Specify which business events can move a transaction between states and which sources are allowed to assert them.
  2. Persist transition events. Record transaction identity, event type, source, and time, while adding explicit ordering and deduplication rules for retries and concurrent updates.
  3. Protect side effects. Use stable, scoped idempotency keys with shared durable storage, atomic claims, and provider-side idempotency where available.
  4. Reconcile on a schedule. Compare processor and internal records using documented matching rules and an appropriate time window.
  5. Route exceptions to owners. Persist mismatches, notify responsible staff, and track investigation through resolution.
  6. Test failure cases. Exercise repeated requests, concurrent transitions, missed webhooks, reversals, restarts, and failures between a provider response and local persistence.

Applied together, these controls make status changes explainable, external drift discoverable, and retries safer. They do not remove the need to define ledger invariants or investigate each exception.
