The startup behind the “dopamine headphones” was Nervana, a Florida company that demonstrated a headset combining ordinary music playback with low-power electrical stimulation through the ear canal. Nervana said the signal stimulated the vagus nerve and promoted dopamine release, producing pleasurable or relaxing sensations. Those were company claims and demonstration reports from 2016—not proof that the device reliably got users high or worked as a medical treatment.
What were Nervana’s headphones?
Nervana presented a dedicated unit and special headphones rather than ordinary earbuds. Music played normally while an integrated stimulator sent a low-power electrical signal through the ear canal. The startup marketed the combination as a way to influence mood without exercise.
Contemporary coverage in January and February 2016 identified Nervana as the company behind the product now remembered as “dopamine headphones.” The reporting describes a prototype or early product demonstration, not a documented consumer product with established long-term availability.
How was the system supposed to work?

The headphones delivered music in the conventional way. Nervana’s pitch was that the sound could be paired with stimulation rather than being the active ingredient by itself.

Electrical stimulation through the ear canal
According to ScienceAlert, the integrated device delivered a low-power electrical signal through the ear canal while music played, with the stated target being the vagus nerve. Engadget likewise described current being pushed through the ear canal while the user listened to music.
The dopamine claim
Nervana CEO Ami Brannon told Nerdist, “We have a device that sends an electrical signal through the ear canal to stimulate the release of dopamine in your brain.” That sentence is a company description, not an independently established account of what the device did in people. The contemporary reports do not establish that the stimulation reliably raised dopamine levels, produced intoxication, or delivered a clinically meaningful effect.

Did journalists say they felt anything?
Yes, but the accounts were anecdotal demonstrations. Engadget’s Daniel Cooper described a hands-on session in which Nervana connected a music player to a dedicated unit and special headphones. ScienceAlert relayed Futurism journalist Amanda Gutterman’s description of tingling during a demonstration followed by a pleasurable feeling.
Individual sensations during a product demonstration cannot show that dopamine caused the experience. Expectation, music, the electrical sensation itself and the setting could all influence how a participant feels. No controlled clinical result in the cited reporting demonstrates a repeatable “high.”

Was it safe to use?
Nervana’s own warning was conservative. ScienceAlert quoted Brannon saying, “We’re not going to recommend driving, certainly not while using it,” and advising users to stay off the road for at least 30 minutes afterward.
That advice indicates that the company anticipated a possible effect on alertness or perception, but it does not define a validated impairment threshold. Do not treat the 30-minute period as a scientifically proven safety clearance. The available 2016 reporting does not establish a complete risk profile, appropriate users, contraindications, or long-term effects.

Can you still buy Nervana headphones?
Current availability, pricing, regulatory status and company status are unresolved by the reporting available for this topic. A verified current retailer or official product page is not established here, so an online listing should not be assumed to be genuine, supported by Nervana or equivalent to the demonstrated device.
Generic earbuds do not provide Nervana’s ear-canal electrical stimulation. Listening to music through ordinary headphones is not the same technology.
