The clips were performed by actor and Cruise impersonator Miles Fisher, then digitally altered by Belgian visual-effects artist Christopher Ume (also known as Chris Umé) to replace Fisher’s face with a convincing Cruise likeness. Posted by the parody account @DeepTomCruise in early March 2021, the videos looked authentic enough to spark speculation, fool viewers and even pass some commercial deepfake-detection tools.
What happened with the DeepTomCruise videos?
The account @DeepTomCruise published short clips showing a man who appeared to be Tom Cruise golfing, performing a coin trick and joking directly to camera. Cruise was not involved in the performances. The account presented the videos as parody, but their realism made some viewers wonder whether the actor had quietly joined TikTok.

Ume created the face-swap visual effects with Fisher. Fisher supplied the underlying acting, voice, hair, gestures and physical resemblance; Ume replaced his face with a generated or trained likeness of Cruise. CBS described the process as stitching Cruise’s face onto Fisher’s real video and sound.

Who made the Tom Cruise deepfake?
Miles Fisher was the performer
Fisher is a professional actor and Tom Cruise impersonator. He acted out the scenes and provided the physical performance that made the synthetic face believable. His voice, mannerisms and resemblance reduced the amount of visual and behavioral mismatch the face replacement had to overcome.

Christopher Ume created the face swap
Ume handled the visual-effects work, replacing Fisher’s face with a Cruise likeness. The result was not a recording of Cruise secretly making TikToks; it was a composite built from Fisher’s performance and Ume’s digital manipulation.
Why did it look so convincing?
- A convincing base performance: Fisher already resembled Cruise and copied his vocal delivery, expressions and gestures.
- Face replacement rather than a fully synthetic body: The video retained a real performer’s timing, movement, hair and lighting, giving the footage natural physical behavior.
- Short, casual clips: Brief videos leave less time for viewers to inspect consistency frame by frame.
- Weak assumptions about provenance: A TikTok account framed as parody can still be mistaken for an official or newly discovered celebrity account when the footage looks plausible.
Viewers did notice possible flaws, including a reflection that appeared out of sync. But small artifacts can be overlooked when a clip matches a familiar face and arrives in an entertaining format.
Did deepfake detectors identify the videos?
Not reliably. The Guardian reported that commercial deepfake-recognition tools marked the clips “authentic,” while human viewers noticed possible visual inconsistencies. That contrast is a warning: a detector result is one signal, not proof that a video is genuine. Tools can miss a manipulated clip, especially when the source footage is high quality and the face replacement is carefully produced.

How many views did the Tom Cruise deepfake get?
Published figures refer to different dates and clips, so they should not be combined into one definitive total.
| View figure | What it measured | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 million | Views Ume said Fisher reported in a screenshot two days after the first upload | Christopher Ume, reported by The Guardian, 2021 |
| 11 million | Views for the videos as reported at the time | BFI, 2021 |
| 14 million | Views for the golf deepfake on TikTok | ABC News Australia, by June 2021 |
The numbers show rapid distribution, but they are snapshots with different scopes: an early account of the first upload, a BFI figure for the videos, and a later count specifically for the golf clip.
What did the creator say about the project?
Ume told The Guardian, “I’d like to show people the technical possibilities of these things. I don’t intend to use it in any way where I would upset people – I just want to show them what’s possible in a few years.” He also said, “I just strongly think that there should be laws to help with the responsible use of AI and deepfakes.”

CBS quoted Ume saying, “We believed as long as we’re making clear this is a parody, we’re not doing anything to harm his image.” The episode nevertheless demonstrated that a disclosure can be present while viewers still misunderstand what they are seeing.

Check provenance before trusting appearance
Look at who uploaded the clip, whether the account is official, and whether reputable reporting confirms the event. A familiar face is not evidence that the person recorded the footage.
Treat detector scores as supporting evidence
An “authentic” result from a commercial tool does not establish authenticity, just as a suspected artifact does not by itself prove manipulation. Compare multiple signals: source history, corroborating footage, audio consistency, reflections, lip movement and edits.

Separate popularity from truth
Millions of views indicate distribution, not identity, consent or factual accuracy. The DeepTomCruise clips became widely watched precisely because they occupied the gap between recognizable performance and synthetic imagery.
Why the DeepTomCruise story still matters
The videos combined a real human performance with a synthetic celebrity likeness, making the result entertaining and technically impressive while exposing a verification risk. They showed how parody can travel as apparent news, how an impersonator can make face replacement more persuasive, and why platform reach should never be treated as proof that a celebrity actually appears in a clip.
