Neptune: Facts About the Solar System’s Farthest Planet

Neptune is the eighth and most distant planet: an ice giant with no solid surface, 16 known moons, faint rings, and just one spacecraft visit.

Neptune is the eighth and most distant planet from the Sun, about 4.5 billion kilometers (2.8 billion miles) away on average, or 30 astronomical units, according to NASA Science. It is an ice giant roughly four times Earth’s diameter, it has no solid surface, and only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 in 1989, has ever visited it. Below are the details, with measured facts kept separate from what scientists infer.

Neptune at a glance

Property Value Source
Position Eighth planet from the Sun NASA Science
Average distance from the Sun About 4.5 billion km (2.8 billion miles), or 30 AU NASA Science
Equatorial diameter 49,528 km (30,775 miles), about four times Earth’s NASA Science
Known moons 16 NASA Science
Rings At least five main rings, plus four prominent arcs NASA Science
Spacecraft visits One: Voyager 2, August 25, 1989 NASA Science

An astronomical unit (AU) is the average Earth–Sun distance. The moon and ring counts are NASA’s current figures, and they can change if astronomers confirm new discoveries.

What is Neptune made of?

Neptune is classed as an ice giant, not a gas giant like Jupiter or Saturn. NASA describes at least 80% of its mass as a hot, dense fluid of water, methane and ammonia, sitting over a small rocky core. “Ice” here refers to these compounds, not frozen material you could stand on.

Keep in mind that this interior structure is a scientific model. Nothing has sampled Neptune’s deep interior; the layers are inferred from measurements made from a distance.

Neptune has no solid surface. Its atmosphere, mostly hydrogen and helium with a smaller amount of methane, blends gradually into the deeper fluid layers.

Why is Neptune blue?

Methane in the atmosphere absorbs some colors of sunlight, which contributes to Neptune’s blue appearance. One caution from NASA: Voyager 2 images were processed to bring out clouds and other features, so the deep blue in many famous pictures is not a straightforward view of what a human observer would see.

Weather and temperature

Neptune gets little sunlight yet is active. During the Voyager 2 encounter in 1989, the spacecraft recorded winds of about 1,100 kilometers per hour (680 miles per hour) and large dark atmospheric spots (NASA Science). Those are observations from that flyby, not a live weather report.

The NASA/NSSDC fact sheet gives a temperature of 72 kelvins at the 1-bar level, the pressure roughly equal to Earth’s sea-level air pressure. Because Neptune has no surface, this is a reference-atmosphere value at a chosen pressure, not a surface temperature.

A long year and a late discovery

Neptune was found in 1846 after astronomers used mathematics to explain irregularities in Uranus’s orbit. Urbain Le Verrier sent a predicted position to Johann Gottfried Galle at the Berlin Observatory, and Galle spotted the planet. John Couch Adams made independent predictions too, so the discovery was not the work of one mathematician. Earlier, Galileo had recorded Neptune as a fixed star in 1612 and 1613 without recognizing it as a planet (NASA).

NASA notes that Neptune completed its first 165-year orbit since that 1846 discovery in 2011 (NASA exploration page). That gives a feel for how slowly it circles the Sun; “165 years” is a rounded figure, not an exact Earth-year count.

Neptune’s rings

NASA lists at least five main rings: Galle, Leverrier, Lassell, Arago and Adams. The Adams ring contains four prominent arcs named Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité and Courage. NASA describes the arcs as clumps of material, and reports the hypothesis that the gravity of the moon Galatea helps keep them from spreading out. That is an explanation scientists propose, not a directly observed mechanism.

How many moons does Neptune have?

NASA reports 16 known moons. The largest is Triton, discovered 17 days after Neptune itself. Triton orbits retrograde, opposite to Neptune’s rotation, which supports the hypothesis that Neptune captured it rather than forming alongside it (NASA).

Voyager 2 found geyser-like plumes on Triton, and NASA gives its surface temperature as about -235 °C (-391 °F) (NASA Triton page). The activity is notable, but Triton is extremely cold, not warm or Earth-like.

Has a spacecraft visited Neptune?

Only once. Voyager 2 flew past on August 25, 1989, about 4,800 kilometers (2,980 miles) above the cloud tops. The encounter revealed moons and rings and returned atmospheric observations. NASA’s mission page says: “Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to study all four of the solar system’s giant planets at close range.” (NASA Science). Much of what we know therefore rests on a single flyby plus telescope observations.

Can you see Neptune without a telescope?

No. NASA says Neptune is not visible to the naked eye. The NASA/NSSDC sheet lists a mean apparent visual magnitude at opposition of 7.7, fainter than the roughly magnitude 6 limit usually quoted for naked-eye viewing under dark skies. That suggests binoculars or a telescope are needed; that is an inference from the figures, and no specific instrument has been tested here. Expect a tiny bluish dot, not a Voyager-style image.

Could there be life on Neptune?

NASA says Neptune’s temperatures, pressures and materials are most likely too extreme and volatile for life as we know it. That is an assessment of known conditions, not proof that every possible niche has been ruled out.
