NEMA 17 identifies a stepper-motor frame-size class, not a universal motor specification. The name points to a flange of approximately 1.7 inches (about 42 mm), but it does not guarantee matching motor length, shaft, wiring, current, torque, or controller compatibility. Before substituting or buying one, check the exact model’s mechanical dimensions, datasheet, motion requirements, and driver setup.
What does NEMA 17 mean?
NEMA 17 is a frame-size designation used for stepper motors. ASPINA describes the flange size as approximately 1.7 inches, while Oriental Motor lists NEMA 17 among standard stepper-motor frame sizes. Those references describe a frame class; they do not mean every motor has identical external dimensions or mounting and shaft features.

The label alone therefore cannot tell you whether a motor will physically fit a machine or perform as needed. Two NEMA 17 motors may differ in length, shaft dimensions, winding characteristics, current rating, torque, wiring, and feedback features.

What to check before choosing or replacing one
- Confirm mechanical fit. Check the motor’s mounting pattern, body length, shaft diameter and length, and how the shaft connects to the load. Do not assume the frame label guarantees these details.
- Identify the exact model. Find the full model number on the motor or product listing, then use that model’s datasheet or manufacturer page. This is where to confirm wiring and electrical ratings.
- Match electrical and motion requirements. Compare phase current, winding resistance and inductance, step angle, and torque—especially torque at the speed your mechanism needs. Holding torque by itself does not describe performance throughout motion.
- Check the driver and control system. Confirm that the driver supports the motor’s winding and current requirements and works with the system’s supply and control approach. There is no single driver or supply requirement for every NEMA 17 motor.
- Verify optional hardware. If the motor uses an encoder, cable, extension, or damper, check that the accessory matches the exact product family, connector, and shaft arrangement.
Why model specifications matter
Published NEMA 17 examples show how much specifications can vary. The figures below belong to the named products only; they are not class-wide values.
| Motor or product | Published specifications | What the example illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Nanotec SC4118L1804-ENO05K | 1.8 A per winding; 1.8° per step; 4000 CPR incremental encoder; 3.3 mH inductance per winding, according to Nanotec’s product page, accessed in 2026. | A specific motor variant can include encoder feedback as well as defined winding and step-angle data. |
| 42HB34F08AB-01 | 0.84 A/phase; 1.8° per step; 5.75 ohms/phase; 9.3 mH/phase; 2.8 kg·cm holding torque, according to the datasheet distributed by Kjell & Company. The publication date is not stated in the datasheet result. | Current, winding properties, and holding torque can differ substantially from another motor in the same frame class. |
| Analog Devices PD-1370 | 9–28 V DC supply range and up to 2 A RMS motor current for this product family, according to Analog Devices’ product page, accessed in 2026. | This is a smart stepper product with an integrated controller/driver; its supply and current figures are product-specific, not general NEMA 17 requirements. |
Other product pages underscore that the category spans different configurations and intended uses. Nanotec describes the SC4118 as a high-torque NEMA 17 motor, and notes that particular ENO variants have high-resolution encoders for precise positioning and closed-loop applications. Joy-IT describes its NEMA17-04 for automation and CNC, including 3D printers and milling machines, as well as robotics. These are examples for those products, not evidence that any NEMA 17 motor suits every machine.

How to match the motor to a driver and machine
Choose the motor and driver as parts of one motion system. Use the precise motor documentation to confirm wiring and ratings, then verify that the driver can operate the windings within the motor’s requirements and that the supply is appropriate for that driver-and-motor combination. A motor’s current rating should not be mistaken for a universal power-supply voltage or a promise of a particular torque at every speed.

For performance, compare the torque needed by the actual mechanism at its operating speed with the motor’s documented torque behavior. Also confirm the step angle and decide whether the application needs encoder feedback or can use open-loop control. A motor with a matching frame may still be unsuitable if its shaft does not fit, its torque is insufficient at speed, or its electrical and control requirements do not match the existing system.

Nanotec directs customers to “Find a matching motor controller/drive here” on its SC4118 page. Its product pages also list motor and encoder cables, extensions, and dampers for particular motor families. Treat these as model-series accessories: check connector, motor, and controller details before ordering or wiring them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is another NEMA 17 a drop-in replacement?
Only when the details—not just the frame label—match the existing installation. Check the mounting and shaft dimensions, body clearance, wiring and connector, winding current, driver compatibility, and the torque required by the load. If the replacement adds an encoder or integrated controller, confirm that the rest of the system supports those features. When a key specification is missing, consult the manufacturer’s documentation rather than inferring compatibility from “NEMA 17.”
