Neko lets multiple people use one remotely hosted browser session together. It streams the session’s video and audio to participants and gives them interactive access, making it useful for collaborative browsing, remote web-app access, private cloud browsing and watch parties. Neko is self-hosted software—not a managed browser service—so you run it on a machine or server you control and configure its network access.
What Neko does
The m1k1o/neko community edition is an open-source, self-hosted virtual browser: one browser instance runs on your host, while participants connect remotely through a web interface. The project describes multiuser collaboration and real-time audio and video streaming among its capabilities. Those are project-stated features, not independent performance measurements. See the Neko v3 introduction and the m1k1o/neko repository.
That shared session can suit tasks where people need to look at or interact with the same browser, rather than simply view a screen broadcast. Neko’s documented scenarios include collaborative browsing, access to web applications, private cloud browsing and watch parties. The project also describes uses such as teaching, support and interactive presentations.
How Neko differs from a browser in the cloud
Neko is software you deploy and operate yourself. The browser session runs on your chosen host; users connect to that host. This gives the operator control over deployment and browser state, but also makes installation, updates and network configuration the operator’s responsibility. It is not a hosted subscription service that supplies a browser instance for you.

The official v3 introduction lists configurable bookmarks, extensions and persistent data, as well as GPU acceleration. These describe project capabilities; they do not establish a particular level of speed, hardware support, or performance for a given deployment.
Which Neko project should you use?
“Neko” can refer to more than one repository. This article focuses on the m1k1o/neko community edition and its v3 documentation. The repository states that the community edition is licensed under Apache-2.0.

A separate project, demodesk/neko, says it began as a fork of m1k1o/neko. It describes itself as a virtual desktop environment backend and WebRTC renderer intended to support applications that stream desktop environments to browsers. Its README lists backend-oriented capabilities, some marked experimental. Those claims should not be assumed to describe the m1k1o community edition.
How installation and network access work
The official v3 installation guide recommends Docker because it bundles dependencies and isolates Neko from the host. It provides both Docker Run and Docker Compose examples, and describes Compose as preferable for production because it helps manage the container, updates and configuration. Follow the v3 installation guide for the current commands and settings.

There are two network paths to plan for: the web interface and WebRTC media traffic. The guide’s example maps a web-interface port and a UDP port range, and configures environment variables for the WebRTC endpoint range and the address clients should use. It also separates user and administrator passwords. WebRTC can fail even when the web page opens if the UDP range is not reachable or the advertised address is wrong.
Choose the address for where clients connect
- Local testing on the host: The guide’s one-to-one NAT example advertises
127.0.0.1. That loopback address is an illustration for local access, not a general value for other devices. - Clients on your private network: Advertise the host’s LAN address so those clients can reach it.
- Public access: Configure router port forwarding for the required web and UDP traffic, and follow the guide’s direction to remove the local-address variable. Use the networking reference for the actual deployment rather than copying local example values unchanged.
The web interface being reachable does not by itself prove that interactive audio/video connectivity is correctly configured. Confirm that the mapped UDP range and advertised server address match the route clients will use.

Can you run Neko on a Raspberry Pi?
The official v3 introduction lists Raspberry Pi and ARM devices among its platform categories, alongside Linux, Docker and cloud services. That supports considering a Raspberry Pi or another ARM device as an optional host; it does not guarantee compatibility with a particular board generation or configuration.
The reviewed official materials do not specify minimum CPU or memory, expected concurrent-user capacity, or measured performance by board. Before buying hardware, check that a Neko image is available for the exact architecture and verify the current requirements for your intended workload. No particular Raspberry Pi model is established as required or tested here.

When Neko is a good fit—and what to weigh
- Consider it when you want to host a browser yourself and let several people collaborate in one session, including for browsing, web-app access, teaching or watch parties.
- Plan for administration if you are not already comfortable running Docker containers and configuring a reachable server address and WebRTC UDP ports.
- Compare alternatives by deployment model, where browser state lives, whether participants can interact in one session, the target browser or desktop, supported host platforms and networking effort.
- Do not treat feature descriptions as benchmarks. The available project materials do not establish comparative latency, resource use, user capacity or uptime.
