Microsoft’s built-in tools can copy personal files, create recovery media, or restore a PC from a system image, but the guidance reviewed does not describe a simple way to make a bootable, like-for-like clone of your current Windows installation and its installed apps onto a new SSD. The right option depends on whether you need your current setup or only your files.
What “cloning Windows” means—and what Windows’ built-in tools do
A drive clone is generally a bootable copy of the existing system, including Windows, installed applications, settings, and files. Copying documents to another drive is not a clone, and recovery media is not a clone either.

Microsoft documents several backup and recovery paths, but the pages reviewed do not establish a native, one-step cloning workflow for moving the current Windows installation to a replacement SSD. In particular, System Image Recovery restores a PC from a system image backup; it does not itself create that image or prove that a usable image is available for your PC. See Microsoft’s backup, restore, and recovery guidance and its description of the Windows recovery environment.

| Windows option | What it carries or restores | What it does not provide | Best fit |

| Windows Backup or PC transfer | Supported files and settings, depending on the feature and account or device setup. | A byte-for-byte or bootable system-drive clone. Microsoft’s PC-transfer page excludes operating-system files and installed applications and says that feature is no longer available. | Supported backup or transfer needs, not preserving a complete installed setup. |
| Copy files to external storage | Files and folders you select, which you can then copy to the destination PC. | Windows system files, installed apps, or bootability. | Moving personal files only. |
| Recovery Drive | USB recovery media for restoring Windows to the device’s factory state, including after hard-drive replacement. | Personal files or preservation of the current Windows installation. | Recovering the device using its factory recovery configuration. |
| System Image Recovery | Restores a PC using a system image backup through Windows Recovery Environment. | Proof that a system image exists, instructions establishing every image-creation scenario, or a guarantee that a changed-hardware restore will work identically. | Restoring from a suitable system image you already have. |
Microsoft’s current PC transfer guidance says the transfer feature is no longer available and directs readers to Windows Backup and Restore. For Recovery Drive details, see Microsoft’s Recovery Drive instructions.

If you need the same Windows installation and apps on the SSD
Do not treat file copying, a Recovery Drive, or a restore point as a substitute for a bootable clone. The Microsoft documentation covered here does not provide a complete built-in cloning procedure for preserving the current installation on a new SSD. System Image Recovery is relevant only if you have an appropriate system image backup to restore; the recovery feature alone does not create one.
Before changing drives, back up important personal files. Microsoft warns that recovery choices can cause data loss and recommends backing up important files. If your device is encrypted, some Windows Recovery Environment tools may require the BitLocker recovery key. Follow your PC manufacturer’s instructions for SSD installation and boot configuration; drive compatibility depends on the specific computer, and the Microsoft sources do not establish one universal size, form factor, or interface.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
If you only need your personal files
- Connect an external storage device with enough free space for the files you intend to move.
- Copy the selected files and folders from the old PC to the external device.
- Check that the copied files are present on the external device, then eject it safely before unplugging it.
- Connect the device to the destination PC and copy the files to the folders where you want them.
These steps move selected files, not Windows or installed applications. Microsoft’s external-storage transfer guide covers copying and verifying files and safely ejecting the device.
If you need recovery media rather than a clone
A Recovery Drive is intended to help restore Windows on the device, including after a hard-drive replacement. Microsoft describes it as a tool for backing up essential system files needed to restore a PC to its original state. It returns Windows to factory settings rather than preserving your current installation, and it does not contain personal files; keep a separate file backup.

- SEQ Performance Read up to 500MB/s, Write up to 400MB/s
- 4K Aligned Random Write: up to 30K IOPs
- Use an empty USB drive for Recovery Drive creation: the process erases the selected USB drive.
- Do not expect the recovery USB to contain your documents, photos, or other personal files.
- Check the PC maker’s manual for the replacement SSD’s compatibility and the device-specific installation and boot steps.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended. If the replacement SSD is part of a Windows 10 recovery or migration, check Microsoft’s recovery options information and backup-solution guidance for the options relevant to your setup.
