Need More USB Ports on Your Desktop? Four Ways to Add Them

A USB hub is the simplest way to add desktop ports. For an internal upgrade, consider a PCIe card; docks and front-panel modules depend on your PC’s supported features and connections.

The quickest way to add USB ports to a desktop PC is to connect a USB hub. If you want an internal upgrade, install a PCIe USB expansion card in a compatible open slot. A USB-C dock or a front-panel module can also help, but each depends on features and connections your PC actually supports.

1. Connect a USB hub for the quickest fix

A hub adds ports externally, with no need to open the PC. Before choosing one, check its upstream connector—the cable that connects to your computer—and confirm that it matches an available PC port. Also check the hub’s downstream port types, supported data speed, and whether it needs a separate power supply for the devices you plan to connect.

A hub does not make every connected device run at its maximum advertised speed. USB products communicate at the lowest common speed supported by the PC port, hub, cable, and device. USB 3.2 identifies three transfer rates: 20 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and 5 Gbps, and USB 3.2 products are backward compatible. USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview explains the standard and its hub specifications.

2. Install a PCIe USB expansion card

A PCIe card adds USB ports inside the desktop by using a compatible expansion slot on the motherboard. It is a good option when you want an internal upgrade and have a suitable slot available. Check the card’s slot requirement, case bracket, port types, supplemental power connection, and operating-system support before buying.

Example: StarTech.com PEXUSB312A2

The manufacturer datasheet for this specific card lists two USB-A ports rated up to 10 Gbps per port. It calls for a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot; PCIe 2.0 operation is supported at lower performance. The card also has a SATA power header for supplemental power and lists Windows, Linux, and macOS compatibility. These details apply to this model, not to PCIe USB cards generally. Check the current documentation for the exact product before purchase. StarTech.com’s PEXUSB312A2 documentation provides the model specifications.

3. Use a USB-C dock when you need more than USB ports

A dock can combine USB ports with functions such as device charging or display outputs. But a USB-C connector’s shape alone does not guarantee video, charging, or other advanced features. The computer’s USB-C port and the dock both need to support the capability you want.

Microsoft’s docking-station guidance treats host-side USB data, USB Power Delivery, and DisplayPort Alternate Mode as separate capabilities, and includes recommendations for the dock connection. Check the specifications for both your PC and the dock for each function you intend to use. USB4 supports multiple data and display protocols and compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices, but the PC must support the capability you need; a connector that looks like USB-C is not proof that it does. See USB-IF’s USB4 overview.

4. Add ports to the front of the case

A front-panel assembly or drive-bay module can make USB ports easier to reach. Compatibility depends on the case opening and the motherboard’s internal USB headers. Check the manuals for both components to confirm the physical fit and the header type; do not assume a particular speed or connector will work across all cases and boards.

How to choose the right option

Option Best fit What to verify
USB hub More accessible external ports without opening the PC Upstream connector, downstream port types, speed, and power needs
PCIe USB card An internal desktop upgrade when a compatible slot is free Slot, bracket, port types, supplemental power, and OS support
USB-C dock More ports plus charging or display functions, if supported Specific capabilities of both the PC port and the dock
Front-panel module Ports that are easier to reach from the front of the case Case fit and motherboard header compatibility

Check these details before buying

  • Available connection: Identify a free PC port for an external hub or dock, or a compatible PCIe slot or motherboard header for an internal option.
  • Connector types: Match the computer’s upstream connection to the hub or dock, then make sure its downstream ports fit your devices.
  • Speed across the connection: Check the PC port, expansion product, cable, and peripheral. The slowest supported link sets the connection’s speed.
  • Power: Consider whether the connected devices need more power than the hub can provide without its own supply. For docks, verify the specific charging support on both sides.
  • Operating-system support: Microsoft says Windows includes native support for USB host controllers, hubs, and devices that comply with the official USB specification. That general platform support does not establish compatibility for every third-party expansion card; check the product’s listed operating systems and driver requirements. See Microsoft’s USB driver-stack guidance.
