NASA’s Webb Reveals Clues to Planet-Shattering Collisions

James Webb Space Telescope observations, combined with archival Spitzer data, have revealed two distinct chemical signatures in 21 extreme debris disks around young stars. The dust points to different kinds of violent collisions: impacts between Mars-sized bodies in silica-rich disks and less energetic collisions between Moon-sized bodies in silica-poor disks. Those impactors were not observed directly; their sizes and collision energies are inferred from the debris.

What Webb studied in extreme debris disks

As a young star system develops, its gas-rich protoplanetary disk can give way to a gas-poor debris disk. Extreme debris disks are a rare subset with unusually large amounts of warm dust close to the star, in a region comparable to the zone of rocky planets in our solar system. NASA estimates that roughly 1% of young stars show observable signs of this phase in the data collected so far; that is an estimate, not a complete census. NASA’s October 1, 2026, overview explains the category and findings.

The sample combines 21 disks: five identified in Spitzer archival data and 16 observed with Webb. Of the Webb observations, 12 were newly observed disks and four were follow-ups of disks previously seen by Spitzer. NASA classifies eight as silica-rich and 13 as silica-poor. These are counts in the studied sample, not estimates of how common either collision type is throughout the galaxy. NASA’s composition graphic displays the two groups.

Mid-infrared spectra from Webb and Spitzer show three traits shared across the sample: relatively small dust grains, abundant warm dust, and irregular changes in infrared brightness. The spectra also reveal composition, which lets researchers interpret how the dust may have formed.

What silica suggests about the collisions

Observed group What the debris suggests Age and brightness pattern in this sample
Silica-rich (8 disks) High-energy impacts between Mars-sized bodies, with a substantial amount of material vaporized. All are around stars younger than 300 million years.
Silica-poor (13 disks) Less energetic collisions between Moon-sized bodies, including grazing impacts. Found across a broader range of stellar ages; often shows greater brightness variability.

The impact descriptions are interpretations of dust composition, not direct observations of the bodies colliding. In particular, “Mars-sized” and “Moon-sized” describe the inferred scale of the original bodies, not objects Webb resolved inside these disks. The ESA/Webb account also describes the composition-based interpretation.

Why the disks’ changing brightness matters

The silica-poor disks often vary more in infrared brightness. The researchers propose that changes in orbits and further impacts could rapidly reshape fresh debris, producing some of that variability. This is a proposed explanation, not a confirmed account of every brightness change. The age spread in this group may help researchers investigate how long collision-driven activity can continue as planetary systems evolve.

What this could mean for our solar system

The observations offer a way to compare other young planetary systems with the early solar system, but they do not reconstruct our own history. NASA estimates that Earth and the Moon formed around 100 million years after the Sun formed; the Moon likely arose from a collision between Earth and a Mars-sized object. That provides a familiar example of a giant impact, not proof that the disks in Webb’s sample followed the same sequence.

One possibility is that our solar system passed through more than one extreme debris-disk phase. NASA notes that older silica-poor disks could be broadly consistent with a connection to the Late Heavy Bombardment if their brightness changes reflect orbital instability. This remains conditional: only three disks in the sample meet the older-age criterion relevant to that idea, and more observations are needed. As coauthor Attila Moor put it, “Of course, there’s many things we still don’t know about these disks.”

What the results establish—and what they do not

  • Established in this sample: Webb and Spitzer spectra show warm, fine-grained dust, composition differences, and irregular infrared variability across 21 extreme debris disks.
  • Inferred from the evidence: Silica-rich and silica-poor debris points to collisions at different scales and energies.
  • Not established: The sample proportions do not show universal rates for either kind of collision, and the observations do not directly show impacts occurring.
  • Still uncertain: How the brightness variability develops over time, how many debris-disk phases a system can have, and whether the older disks illuminate the Late Heavy Bombardment.

Lead author Kate Su described the work as “the first time we have gathered enough systems to truly understand this subclass that we call extreme debris disks.” That larger sample gives astronomers a clearer basis for comparing the systems, while the age and variability hypotheses remain open questions.
