A reported set of recent Swift and Chandra cosmic images has drawn attention to the mission; the available reporting names the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1097, though those image details have not been verified against a primary NASA release. Separately, NASA confirms that a servicing spacecraft photographed Swift during a close pass.
What is NASA’s Swift spacecraft?
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is a NASA astrophysics spacecraft launched in November 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts and other cosmic objects. By 2026, it had completed 21 years of science operations. Its low-Earth orbit has been gradually shrinking, putting the observatory on course to re-enter the atmosphere.

Swift’s science work has not necessarily ended simply because its orbit is decaying. NASA’s August 28 mission status said the observatory resumed science observations after the effort to boost its orbit was scaled back.

What cosmic images were reported?
A September 10 report described new images from joint Swift and Chandra observations and cited the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1097 as examples. Those specifics come from reporting reproduced by an aggregator, not a primary NASA image release located for this account. They should therefore be treated as reported examples rather than independently confirmed details of a NASA release. The available information does not establish an image count or show that these were Swift’s final science observations.

When is Swift expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere?
NASA’s August 19, 2026 update said Swift was likely to re-enter later in 2026 without intervention. NASA’s September 28 retrospective likewise expected re-entry by year’s end. These are forecasts, not a confirmed date; NASA’s cited updates do not specify a day or month.
NASA has not provided a debris-survival prediction or an impact zone in the cited updates. The forecast of atmospheric re-entry alone does not establish whether any part of the observatory would reach the ground.

Why is Swift falling back toward Earth?
Increased solar activity heated and expanded the upper atmosphere, increasing the drag on Swift as it moved through low Earth orbit. That drag steadily reduced the observatory’s altitude and accelerated its orbital decay.
NASA said the team kept Swift at least 185 miles (300 kilometers) above Earth during preparations, where the planned boost mission had its best chance. That altitude did not stop the long-term decay or guarantee a successful orbit raise.

What happened to the attempt to boost Swift’s orbit?
NASA contracted Katalyst Space in September 2025 to try to raise Swift’s orbit with LINK, a robotic servicing spacecraft. The original plan aimed to capture Swift and boost it, but LINK developed communications and attitude-control problems. NASA and Katalyst scaled back the mission, and Swift’s orbit was not raised.
NASA characterized the original effort as high-risk and high-reward. After the plan changed, LINK was still intended to demonstrate its propulsion system and robotic arms. LINK itself re-entered Earth’s atmosphere on September 25, 2026.
