They are the X-ray outline of MSH 15-52, a pulsar wind nebula about 16,000 light-years from Earth. The pulsar PSR B1509-58 sits at the base of the palm, while streams of high-energy particles trace the apparent wrist, fingers and thumb.
What NASA’s image actually shows
MSH 15-52 is a cloud of energized matter and antimatter surrounding a rapidly rotating neutron star. Its X-ray emission happens to form a striking hand-like pattern, which is why the image is often described as a cosmic hand or skeletal fingers.

- Object: MSH 15-52, a pulsar wind nebula
- Power source: the neutron-star pulsar PSR B1509-58
- Distance: approximately 16,000 light-years
- Visual resemblance: a human hand, including a palm, wrist, fingers and thumb
The “fingers” are therefore a visual analogy. They are regions where energetic particles produce X-rays, not solid structures floating through space.

How the cosmic hand formed
A massive star’s collapse
Roughly 1,500 years ago, a massive star exhausted its fuel and collapsed. Its core was compressed into an extremely dense neutron star. The resulting pulsar rotates rapidly and carries a powerful magnetic field.

A wind of particles and antimatter
PSR B1509-58 loses rotational energy through a pulsar wind: jets and a flow of energized particles, including matter and antimatter. Those particles stream into surrounding space and generate the nebula’s X-ray glow.
The hand shape follows the paths available to those particles. As NASA quoted Stanford University astrophysicist Roger Romani in its October 30, 2023 explanation, “The charged particles producing the X-rays travel along the magnetic field, determining the basic shape of the nebula, like the bones do in a person’s hand.”

What Chandra and IXPE each revealed
The image’s resemblance was established before scientists could map the nebula’s magnetic-field organization. Two NASA X-ray missions contributed different kinds of information.
Recommended Free Tools
| Mission | Observation | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Chandra X-ray Observatory | 2001 X-ray observations | Mapped the hand-shaped X-ray emission and revealed the nebula’s large-scale structure. |
| Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) | About 17 days of observations | Measured X-ray polarization, providing information about the orientation and order of the magnetic field. |
Chandra is primarily an X-ray imaging observatory: it shows where the emission is. IXPE adds polarimetry, measuring the direction in which X-ray waves are polarized. Because the emitting charged particles follow magnetic-field lines, that polarization acts as a tracer of the field’s geometry.

What the polarization pattern means
A turbulent region near the pulsar
Close to PSR B1509-58, IXPE found a comparatively turbulent magnetic field. The violent environment near the neutron star disrupts the field’s organization as the pulsar injects energy and particles into the nebula.
A straighter field farther out
Farther along the jet, wrist, fingers and thumb, the field becomes more uniform and straight. This contrast lets researchers follow how the pulsar accelerates high-energy particles and transports them over a much larger region.

The result is more than a memorable shape: it connects the visible X-ray structure with the invisible magnetic system controlling the particles.
Is NASA’s “ghost hand” a real object?
Yes, MSH 15-52 is a real astronomical system. “Ghost hand” and “skeleton fingers” describe its appearance in processed X-ray imagery, not its physical composition. No solid hand-shaped body exists; the form is a map of glowing plasma and particle flows around a neutron star.

Quick Recap
Why this image matters
- It shows how a dead star’s compact remnant can power a vast, structured nebula.
- It demonstrates that X-ray images can reveal particle flows invisible in ordinary light.
- Polarization measurements expose magnetic-field order that a brightness image alone cannot show.
- The changing field structure provides clues to how pulsars accelerate and move particles to extreme energies.
