Researchers can compare Artemis II’s lunar images, video, crew-observation audio, annotations and reports with Apollo imagery, recorded voice and transcripts—but only when they identify what each record is and how it was produced. NASA’s October 7, 2026 release places more than 800 gigabytes of Artemis II lunar science data in the Planetary Data System (PDS). Apollo’s records come in several forms, including scanned transcripts and later annotated journals, so the archives are complementary rather than interchangeable.
What Artemis II data can researchers compare with Apollo?
The strongest comparisons match evidence by type and purpose: images with images, crew voice records with crew voice records, and observation planning with relevant mission documentation. Artemis II’s released lunar science collection includes more than 11,000 full-resolution images and video, 8.5 hours of audio recordings of crew scientific observations, crew-annotated images, and supporting reports, according to NASA’s October 7, 2026 release.

- Visual observations: Compare Artemis II imagery with Apollo photographs or other visual records, while accounting for differences in cameras, formats, processing and mission circumstances.
- Crew observations: Compare Artemis II audio or notes with Apollo onboard voice records and air-to-ground transcripts. These can illuminate what crews noticed and said, but a recording, a transcript and an annotation are distinct evidence.
- Observation organization: Use the Artemis II science operations report alongside relevant Apollo records to study how observations were organized. Do not infer identical protocols unless the relevant technical documentation establishes that.
NASA describes the Artemis II material as a dataset that complements decades of Apollo and robotic-explorer data. That framing supports cross-era analysis without implying the missions collected or archived identical records.

Start with the Planetary Data System
NASA’s October 2026 release says the lunar science data are available through the Planetary Data System, NASA’s long-term archive for planetary mission data and other flight and ground-based data acquisitions. The release includes the Artemis II Preliminary Lunar Science Report, Artemis II Lunar Science Operations Report and Artemis II Lunar Science Data User Guide. Consult the guide and the documentation for the individual record when selecting or interpreting files.

Use the image collection for browsing and item-level downloads
NASA’s Artemis II Collection presents Earth, Moon and eclipse image galleries. Its default images are converted, lossy JPEG files. Original camera raw files, such as Nikon NEF, are available by request on individual image pages as processing continues. Check the download options for the specific item; do not describe a gallery JPEG as raw or assume every original file is already available.
Use media pages for orientation
NASA’s Artemis II Media Resources page offers mission imagery, video, audio, briefings and related materials. It is useful for orientation and public-facing assets; the PDS release and user guide are the more appropriate starting points for scientific analysis.

Where can I find Apollo records?
Identify the transcript type
NASA’s mission-transcript collection provides scanned transcripts from recorded air-to-ground transmissions and onboard recordings. NASA notes that most Apollo missions produced four transcript types: command-module onboard voice recorder transcripts, lunar-module onboard voice transcripts, Public Affairs Office commentary and technical air-to-ground transcripts. These are not equivalent records: for example, a technical air-to-ground transcript documents a different channel than an onboard voice recording.
Use the Apollo Journals as contextual aids
The Apollo Lunar Surface Journal is an annotated and corrected record of lunar-surface conversations, supplemented by commentary, photographs, maps, background documents, audio and video. The Apollo Flight Journal covers crewed flight phases away from the lunar surface. Journals help readers navigate and contextualize the mission record, but their editorial annotations and commentary should not be mistaken for the underlying scanned transcript.

Are Artemis II and Apollo data directly comparable?
They are comparable for carefully framed questions, not as if they were products of one standardized collection system. Artemis II’s archive includes digital imagery, audio, annotations and reports; Apollo’s historical record includes multiple transcript types, scans and journal material. A comparison should state the medium, provenance, mission phase, processing and research question for each item.

- Medium: Identify whether the evidence is image or video, audio, transcript, annotation, report, telemetry or editorial commentary.
- Provenance: Say whether it is a crew-created record, vehicle or spacecraft instrument output, official report, scanned historical record or later editorial aid.
- Time and mission phase: Establish when the record was created and which flight or surface activity it documents.
- Processing: Distinguish an original or converted image, a scan or transcription, and any annotation or editorial intervention.
- Research question: Specify whether the comparison concerns lunar visual or geological observations, crew perception and decision-making, observation planning or vehicle performance.
NASA’s cited material does not establish precise cross-era instrument calibration, equivalent image resolution or matching observation protocols. Those claims require item-level documentation and technical support; the existence of records in both archives is not enough to demonstrate equivalence.
How should a researcher make a defensible comparison?
- Define the question. Decide whether the target is a visual feature, a crew observation, the organization of observations or vehicle performance. Keep those questions distinct.
- Select like records. Match images to images or crew voice evidence to crew voice evidence where possible. If the comparison crosses record types, name the difference and explain why the records still bear on the question.
- Record provenance and timing. For each item, note who or what created it, when it was recorded, the mission phase, and whether it is a primary record or later editorial material.
- Check processing and versions. For Artemis II images, inspect item-level download choices and distinguish converted JPEGs from requested raw files. For Apollo, identify the transcript type and distinguish a scan from journal annotations.
- Consult mission documentation. Use the Artemis II user guide and relevant reports, plus the corresponding Apollo records, before making claims about collection methods or technical comparability.
- Keep unrelated data streams separate. SLS vehicle instrumentation data concern operations, engineering and development, not the lunar science imagery, audio and crew observations. NASA’s reference guide reports more than 27,000 SLS data sources and more than 20,000 operational and engineering channels; neither number is a count of Artemis II lunar science records. See NASA’s SLS instrumentation and vehicle telemetry reference guide.
Which Artemis II data counts should be used?
For the released lunar science collection, use NASA’s October 7, 2026 figures: more than 800 gigabytes, more than 11,000 full-resolution images and video, and 8.5 hours of crew science-observation audio. NASA’s earlier June 12, 2026 update described an approximately 11,500-file estimate for Earth and Moon image and video and more than 100 science-related audio recordings before publication. Those were a pre-release estimate with a different stated scope, not a replacement count for the October release. The earlier update is available at NASA Science.
