NAS SSD Cache Changed Nothing? Diagnose the Workload Before You Change Drives

SSD cache is workload-specific, not a universal NAS speed upgrade. Diagnose the task, cache hit rate, settings, and drive compatibility before making changes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSD cache is not a general-purpose NAS speed boost. It is most likely to help when a workload repeatedly accesses a relatively small set of data through random reads or writes. If your slow task is a large sequential transfer—or the data is rarely revisited—cache may make little or no difference.

Because the NAS model, software version, cache mode, workload, and measurements are unknown, there is no basis to identify one cause here. Work through the checks below before changing hardware or settings.

Why didn’t SSD cache make the NAS faster?

Cache is designed to reduce latency for frequently accessed data in random I/O patterns, not to accelerate every operation. Synology describes SSD cache as enhancing performance when I/O requires frequent access to randomly placed data: Synology Knowledge Center: What is SSD cache?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A database, virtual machine, mail workload, or file service handling many concurrent small-file requests may be a better candidate than a single large file copy. These are workload examples, not guarantees: the result depends on the NAS, configuration, and actual access pattern. Synology’s workload guidance explains the distinction: Synology: Which applications benefit from SSD cache?

Does SSD cache help with large file transfers?

Usually, it is a poor fit for sustained sequential work such as streaming or transferring large files. Those tasks do not necessarily revisit the same small set of blocks often enough for a cache to serve many requests. Synology specifically identifies large sequential workloads and data read only once as poor cache candidates in its SSD cache guidance.

That does not prove every transfer will be unaffected: the storage layout and bottleneck matter. A transfer may be limited by network speed, the disks, or another part of the system rather than by the access latency cache is intended to reduce.

How to check whether the cache is helping

1. Identify the slow operation

Write down the task that feels slow and whether it involves repeated small, random accesses or a long sequential stream. Also note whether the same data is accessed again. A cache can only help requests that fit its behavior; a one-off workload may not benefit even when the SSD is functioning normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the hit rate and allow for warm-up

Use the hit-rate metric and definition provided by your NAS vendor. Synology defines read-only cache hit rate as accelerated random reads divided by total random reads. A newly created cache can initially miss while frequently accessed data accumulates; Synology calls this a warm-up period. See its explanation of cache hit rate and warm-up: Synology Knowledge Center.

  • Easily monitor the health of drives using the integrated IronWolf Health Management system and enjoy long-term reliability with 1M hours MTBF
  • Three-year limited product warranty protection plan and three year Rescue Data Recovery Services included

A low hit rate means a smaller share of eligible requests is being served from cache. Possible explanations include a workload that does not repeat, a hot set larger than the cache, or a cache that has not warmed. One reading cannot establish which explanation applies, and there is no universal target hit rate supported by the cited guidance.

3. Verify what the cache is assigned to

Check which volume or LUN is associated with the cache and whether that is where the slow workload actually runs. A cache attached elsewhere cannot improve the task you are measuring. Review the vendor’s interface and documentation for the exact NAS and software version; labels and available options differ.

How do cache modes and settings affect the result?

Do not assume cache-mode names mean the same thing across brands or software versions. For example, QNAP’s QTS 4.5.x documentation distinguishes Random I/O and All I/O. It describes Random I/O for workloads such as virtualization and databases, and All I/O for uses including video streaming and large-file access. These are QTS 4.5.x labels and examples, not universal definitions: QNAP QTS 4.5.x cache settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your NAS exposes cache capacity or block-size settings, consult its version-specific documentation before changing them. QNAP identifies capacity and block size as possible factors when its cache hit rate is low: QNAP: What should I do if the cache hit rate is low? A larger cache is not automatically a fix; whether it helps depends on the workload and the amount of frequently accessed data.

Should you buy a different SSD?

First confirm that the SSD is supported for the exact NAS model and intended cache type. Synology recommends compatible SSDs and warns that an unlisted drive may affect system stability and result in data loss. Check the model-specific compatibility information before purchasing or replacing a drive: Synology Compatibility List.

No universal SSD model or upgrade is established as the remedy for an ineffective cache. A drive change will not turn a sequential or rarely repeated workload into a good cache candidate.

What information is needed for a specific diagnosis?

To narrow down why a particular NAS showed no improvement, gather these details before prescribing a configuration change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • NAS make and exact model, plus operating-system version.
  • HDD and SSD layout, cache type, and read-only or read-write mode.
  • The volume or LUN assigned to the cache.
  • The specific workload and whether it revisits data.
  • How long the cache had been active before measuring.
  • Cache hit rate, using the vendor’s definition, and the method used to measure performance.
  • Any identified bottleneck, such as network throughput, disk activity, or application response time.

Without those facts, the available vendor guidance supports a workload-based diagnosis but cannot establish why an unidentified NAS saw no improvement.
