Square ILM and narrow ILM are different heatsink mounting standards. “LGA2011” on a cooler box is not enough to prove compatibility: identify the motherboard’s ILM pattern and confirm that the exact cooler model (and revision) supports it or includes the required mounting hardware.
The practical difference is the mounting-hole pattern
The integrated loading mechanism (ILM) around an LGA2011-family socket determines where the heatsink’s four mounting points sit. Noctua’s compatibility guidance documents these patterns as:

| Feature | Square ILM | Narrow ILM |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting-hole spacing | 80 × 80 mm | 56 × 94 mm |
| Design context | Standard pattern used by many LGA2011 boards | Alternative pattern for boards with restricted space around the socket |
| Cooler-selection rule | Verify square-ILM support | Verify narrow-ILM support explicitly; a mounting kit may be required |
The dimensions describe hole spacing, not the size of the processor package or a guarantee that a cooler will clear nearby memory, VRMs, sockets or the chassis.

Intel describes narrow ILM as an option for motherboard layouts that cannot accommodate the wider, standard mounting points. Most ILM components are shared, but the narrow design changes the frame and hinge/active-lever arms. Intel recommends using it only when board-space constraints require it.

That space saving creates engineering trade-offs. The narrower heatsink mounting area affects the socket’s keepout region and can make routing, component placement and thermal design more difficult. Intel’s guidance is qualitative; it does not establish a universal temperature or cooling-capacity difference between the two patterns.
How cooler compatibility is actually determined
- Identify the board. Check the motherboard manual, product page or a clear photograph of the socket area for “square ILM” or “narrow ILM.” Server and workstation boards may use either format.
- Check the cooler’s exact model and revision. Read the manufacturer’s compatibility table rather than relying on a listing that says only “LGA2011.”
- Confirm the hardware supplied. Some coolers support both patterns from the box; others need a specific bracket, backplate or mounting kit. Do not assume a kit is included because the cooler family supports LGA2011.
- Verify physical clearance. Check heatsink width and height against the case, memory slots, VRM heatsinks and adjacent expansion hardware.
- Match the thermal requirement. Confirm that the cooler is appropriate for the processor and the system’s sustained workload. Mounting compatibility alone says nothing about thermal performance.

Noctua also identifies other models that can be adapted to narrow ILM with additional mounting parts. The required parts depend on the specific model and revision, so consult the current compatibility page before ordering. Compatibility examples do not confirm current stock, price or what a particular retailer’s package contains.

Do not confuse mounting geometry with socket-generation compatibility
LGA2011 covers more than one platform generation. Intel’s E5 v1/v2 thermal-mechanical documentation describes the LGA2011-0 mechanical design, while a separate guide covers LGA2011-3 for E5 v3 and related processors. Similar-looking mounting patterns do not establish electrical or processor interchangeability between generations.
This article addresses heatsink mounting geometry only. Verify the processor, socket generation, motherboard firmware and cooler’s stated platform support separately.

Common buying mistakes
- Trusting the socket name alone: “LGA2011” does not identify square versus narrow ILM.
- Assuming all Xeon boards are narrow: vendors offer both formats; the actual board must be checked.
- Assuming a universal bracket: mounting kits are model-specific and may be sold separately.
- Ignoring revision changes: a cooler’s included hardware can differ between production revisions or regional packages.
- Equating fit with suitability: a bracket that reaches the holes does not prove adequate clearance or cooling for the processor.
A quick decision checklist
- Write down the exact motherboard model and socket generation.
- Record whether its ILM is square or narrow.
- Find the exact cooler model and revision in the manufacturer’s compatibility list.
- Confirm whether narrow-ILM hardware is included or must be purchased separately.
- Measure case, memory and VRM clearance before installation.
- Use the cooler maker’s installation instructions and the board maker’s socket guidance.
