A Node.js host routes messages to isolated agent sessions; channels, providers, and tools can be added as needed. It is aimed at people comfortable with terminal-based setup and customization, not just users looking for a ready-made chat app.
What is NanoClaw?
NanoClaw is software for running a messaging-connected AI assistant under your own management. You choose the integrations and customize the project by forking it, rather than relying on a single fixed package of channels and tools. The official project describes it as lightweight; its README emphasizes a small codebase and integrations installed on demand. NanoClaw’s official site and project README describe its design and setup.

The software is open source under the MIT license, according to the project FAQ. The software itself is free, but using a hosted AI model may incur provider charges. The official FAQ covers licensing and costs.

How NanoClaw handles a message
A messaging app does not communicate directly with an agent container. The host receives and routes messages, with SQLite queues connecting the host and agent. The project’s official description summarizes the arrangement as “One Node host. One Docker container per active session. A pair of SQLite queues moves messages across the boundary.” NanoClaw’s architecture overview describes the flow.

- A message arrives through a configured messaging-channel adapter.
- The Node host routes it through an inbound SQLite queue.
- An agent running in a Docker container processes the message.
- The agent sends its response through an outbound SQLite queue, and the host delivers it through the channel adapter.
Each active session has its own container and message databases. Sessions in the same agent group share that group’s workspace and memory; separate groups have separate state. The project describes the container runtime as Bun plus the selected provider. Claude is the README’s default provider, while alternatives can be installed or selected for agent groups. The README and official architecture overview explain the components.
Channels, providers, and tools are modular
NanoClaw materials list possible channels such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Signal, Matrix, and Google Chat. That list does not mean every integration is included in a fresh checkout: channels and other integrations are installed on demand, and availability or instructions can change. Consult the current README and project documentation for the options available to your setup. The project README describes its integration approach.

Providers and tools are modular in the same way. This lets a user keep a customized fork focused on the channels, model providers, and capabilities they intend to use, but it also means setup is not simply a matter of opening an account in a finished hosted service.
What you need to run NanoClaw
The official site lists macOS, Linux, and Windows through WSL2, with Docker as the supported container runtime. Its stated requirements include Node.js, pnpm, Docker, and an AI-provider credential path. The README’s quick start is to clone the official repository and run bash nanoclaw.sh; the installer can install missing dependencies, prepare the container, and pair a first channel. Check the current project instructions for exact version requirements and steps because they can change. The README and official site provide the current setup guidance.

Is NanoClaw secure?
NanoClaw’s security documentation describes Docker as the primary isolation boundary. Agents run unprivileged, receive explicitly mounted paths, and have session-specific state. Additional host directories are subject to an allowlist and blocked-path checks. The documentation also treats incoming messages as potentially malicious or prompt-injected, regardless of who sent them. The project’s security document details this model.
The site and security document describe routing outbound credentials through OneCLI Agent Vault by default so raw provider credentials do not enter agent containers. The security document characterizes this as an integration seam installed through a separate skill, rather than a credential gateway implemented by NanoClaw itself. Verify the current installation and behavior before relying on that arrangement. The security document provides the project’s details.

These are documented design choices, not proof of security or the result of an independent audit. Container isolation depends on configuration and implementation. Before handling sensitive data, review the current security documentation, check exactly which folders are mounted, keep host secrets outside agent-visible folders, and control who can send messages to the assistant.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Who is NanoClaw for?
NanoClaw is a better fit for someone who wants to manage and customize an assistant than for someone seeking a no-setup messaging bot. The project expects users to work with a terminal and Git and to manage Docker and provider credentials. You do not necessarily need to write every integration yourself, but you should be comfortable following technical setup instructions and maintaining a customized project.
- Consider it if you want to run the assistant on your own machine, choose integrations, and inspect or modify the project.
- Think carefully first if you need a turnkey service, are not comfortable with command-line tools, or cannot manage provider credentials and updates.
What to weigh before choosing it
NanoClaw’s documented strengths are local management, customizable integrations, and per-session Docker containers with explicit mounts. Those come with setup and maintenance responsibilities. To assess whether it suits you, look at the isolation boundary, the channels and providers currently available, the amount of customization required, credential storage and network access, and the likely cost of model use. The project materials do not establish a universal performance or security winner over other agent frameworks.
