Yes—you can run n8n on your own computer, homelab, VPS, or private cloud today. The most practical route is Docker Compose with a persistent volume, a protected encryption key, and a reverse proxy for any public webhook. From there, you can self-host notification bots, scheduled reports, lead routing, private AI retrieval, and maintenance automations while keeping credentials and execution data under your control.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click n8n, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
n8n is a fair-code workflow automation platform that connects applications through APIs with little or no code. The official directory listed 13,300 workflow automation templates in 2026; use those templates as starting points, then check every trigger, credential, approval step, and operational requirement before deploying one continuously.

What n8n does and why self-hosting matters
n8n (pronounced “n-eight-n”) connects apps with APIs and lets you manipulate data through visual nodes, expressions, and optional JavaScript or Python. A workflow has one or more trigger nodes, processing steps, integrations, and an outcome such as a message, database update, file, or ticket.
With self-hosting, the n8n editor and execution engine run in infrastructure you administer instead of a vendor-managed workspace. That can be useful when inbound payloads contain customer information, when credentials must remain inside a private network, or when you need to choose your own update and backup schedule. It also means you are responsible for the database, storage, TLS, monitoring, upgrades, and recovery.

What self-hosting does not automatically provide
- It does not make a workflow secure by itself. A publicly reachable webhook still needs authentication, validation, rate limiting, and TLS.
- It does not guarantee uptime. A laptop that sleeps is not an always-on automation server.
- It does not remove third-party dependencies. A workflow calling Gmail, Slack, Telegram, a CRM, or an AI model still depends on those services and their credentials.
- It does not grant unrestricted commercial rights. The Sustainable Use License and edition-specific terms still apply.
Choose a self-hosting route
n8n documents several deployment paths. Docker Compose is usually the clearest repeatable option because the application, environment variables, and storage mapping can be kept in one version-controlled project. npm and the one-line setup are alternatives for administrators who already maintain Node.js services. Cloud-provider deployments can simplify infrastructure, but you still need to understand persistence and access control.
| Route | Best fit | Important responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Docker Compose | Homelab, private server, VPS, reproducible production setup | Persist /home/node/.n8n, protect the compose file and encryption key, and patch the image. |
| npm | Operators who already manage Node.js and process supervision | Maintain a compatible Node.js runtime, service manager, logs, and upgrade process. |
| One-line setup | Quick evaluation on a disposable machine | Convert the temporary setup into a persistent, secured deployment before handling real data. |
| Cloud-provider deployment | Teams that want managed virtual infrastructure | Confirm disk persistence, firewall rules, backups, and the provider’s update model. |
Without a license key, n8n runs as the free Community edition. Paid self-hosted Business and Enterprise editions add licensed features, so select an edition only after checking the current licensing and pricing documentation.

The following sequence describes a repeatable deployment. It is an illustrative configuration pattern, not a claim that a particular server command has been executed.
1. Prepare the host
- Use a supported 64-bit Linux server or desktop with Docker Engine and Docker Compose installed.
- Give the service a stable hostname or local address. For public webhooks, plan a DNS name and a reverse proxy that can obtain TLS certificates.
- Create a directory owned by the account that will maintain the deployment, and restrict access to its environment files.
2. Create a Compose file
A minimal service maps a durable volume to n8n’s data directory:
services:
n8n:
image: docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n
ports:
- '5678:5678'
environment:
- GENERIC_TIMEZONE=Etc/UTC
- TZ=Etc/UTC
- N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY=generate-a-long-random-secret
- WEBHOOK_URL=https://automation.example.net/
volumes:
- n8n_data:/home/node/.n8n
volumes:
n8n_data:
Replace the example hostname and secret with values appropriate for your environment. Keep the encryption key stable: changing it can make previously stored credentials unreadable. Do not commit the key to a public repository or paste it into screenshots.
3. Start and verify the service
- From the directory containing the Compose file, run
docker compose up -d. - Open the editor on the host and complete the initial owner-account setup.
- Check the container logs with
docker compose logs -f n8n. Look for a successful startup rather than assuming that a running container means every integration is configured. - Create a throwaway test workflow, execute it manually, and confirm that executions appear in the editor.
4. Put public endpoints behind TLS
Do not expose an unauthenticated editor directly to the internet. Place a reverse proxy in front of n8n, forward HTTPS traffic to the internal service, and allow only the ports you need through the firewall. Set the webhook base URL to the public HTTPS address so external services generate callbacks that reach the proxy. Keep the editor restricted by VPN, identity-aware access, or an additional network policy when possible.
Persistence, credentials, and backups
The Docker image stores n8n’s local workflow data and SQLite database under /home/node/.n8n. A container without a named volume or bind mount can lose that data when it is recreated. Persistence is therefore a design requirement, not an optional optimization.

What to back up
- The mounted n8n data directory or volume, including the SQLite database and workflow metadata.
- The encryption key used to protect credentials.
- Your Compose file and environment configuration, with secrets stored separately and encrypted.
- Any external database, object storage, or vector database used by a workflow.
Take backups while you understand n8n’s write activity, retain more than one restore point, and periodically perform a restoration test on an isolated instance. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Timezone and scheduling
Set GENERIC_TIMEZONE and the container’s TZ consistently with the business location that owns the schedule. A daily trigger at 09:00 can run at an unexpected hour if the host, container, and workflow use different timezone assumptions. Document daylight-saving behavior for reports that cross regions.
Self-hostable workflow examples
Webhook-to-notification
Pattern: Webhook trigger → authentication and schema validation → filtering or transformation → Slack, Telegram, or email notification.
This is a strong first project because the trigger and result are easy to observe. Self-hosting keeps the inbound payload and webhook logs on infrastructure you control. Add a shared secret, HMAC signature, or equivalent verification before processing the body. Reject malformed requests, limit payload size at the proxy, and avoid placing full sensitive records in chat messages.
- Create a Webhook node with the HTTP method required by the sender.
- Validate required fields and reject unexpected values with an IF or Code node.
- Normalize timestamps and identifiers so downstream messages are consistent.
- Send only the minimum necessary fields to the notification service.
- Add an error branch that records the event ID and alerts an operator without retrying endlessly.
The workflow directory’s app filters can help locate current Slack, Telegram, Gmail, and Outlook examples. Treat a template as a starting point: authentication fields and API permissions may differ between accounts.
Scheduled spreadsheet or database report
Pattern: Schedule trigger → Google Sheets or database read → row filtering and aggregation → report creation → email or link delivery.
Use this pattern for daily inventory summaries, support queues, finance extracts, or operational dashboards. Store credentials in n8n’s credential system instead of hard-coding tokens in expressions. Decide whether the schedule should run in the business timezone or UTC, and record the last successful execution so a missed run can be detected.

- Make the output idempotent: a rerun should update the same report or carry a unique run identifier rather than create duplicates.
- Send a success notification only after the report has been written and verified.
Issue or lead routing
Pattern: Form, mailbox, CRM, or webhook trigger → classify and enrich → create a ticket or CRM record → notify an owner → wait for human approval when needed.
Routing workflows benefit from explicit exception handling. Keep an unclassified queue for records that do not match a rule, and include the original ID in every downstream record so an operator can trace the decision. If an AI classifier is used, require human approval for high-impact actions such as changing account status, issuing refunds, or sending legal communications.
When comparing templates, check the trigger application, destination system, number of credentials, deduplication strategy, and whether a human approval step already exists. A template that creates a ticket but has no retry or duplicate protection may be suitable for a prototype but not for an always-on queue.
Private AI retrieval workflow
The official Self-hosted AI Starter Kit is a Docker Compose pattern that combines n8n orchestration with Ollama for local models, Qdrant for vector retrieval, PostgreSQL for structured data, and preconfigured AI workflows. It is designed to demonstrate retrieval-augmented generation while keeping the model and indexed documents in your environment.
Separate the software pattern from hardware expectations. The kit description does not prescribe one particular computer, processor, graphics card, memory size, or model. Actual requirements depend on the Ollama model, context length, embedding model, document volume, and concurrency you choose. Start with a small document set, measure response time and memory use, and scale only after confirming that the host can keep all services healthy.
- Deploy the kit’s Compose services on an isolated host or private network.
- Download an Ollama model appropriate for the available memory and licensing requirements.
- Ingest documents with stable IDs and metadata such as source, date, and access group.
- Generate embeddings and store them in Qdrant; keep PostgreSQL for workflow and application records that need relational queries.
- Retrieve a limited number of relevant chunks, pass them to the model, and return citations or source metadata to the user.
- Restrict document ingestion and retrieval credentials, and back up both the source documents and vector index strategy.
Local inference can reduce data movement, but it does not automatically make answers accurate. Add evaluation documents, prompt-injection defenses, access filtering, and a human review path for consequential outputs.

- Retries with bounded attempts and increasing delays for transient API failures.
- A dead-letter or quarantine path for records that repeatedly fail.
- Failure notifications that include workflow name, execution ID, node, and a redacted error message.
- Execution retention rules that balance troubleshooting value against storage and privacy requirements.
- Periodic backup checks, image-update review, and a documented rollback path.
Avoid retrying non-idempotent actions blindly. Sending an email, charging a customer, or creating a ticket twice can be worse than a visible failure. Use an idempotency key or check for an existing record before repeating the side effect.

The directory’s filters are useful, but popularity alone does not tell you whether a workflow fits your environment. Evaluate each candidate on five axes:
| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Trigger | Is it a webhook, schedule, app event, polling loop, or manual run? What happens if the trigger is delayed? |
| Integrations and credentials | Which accounts, scopes, API keys, databases, and paid services are required? |
| Data sensitivity and locality | Where do payloads, logs, files, embeddings, and backups travel? |
| Human approval | Can an operator review exceptions before an irreversible action? |
| Operational burden | Does it require persistent storage, a queue, monitoring, retries, backups, or a reverse proxy? |
Quick local prototype versus always-on VPS
| Characteristic | Quick local prototype | Always-on VPS deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Available while the computer is awake and connected | Designed for continuous operation, subject to your provider and maintenance |
| Networking | Usually private or tunnelled; public webhooks need extra setup | Public DNS, reverse proxy, firewall, and TLS are normally required |
| Storage | Named volume or bind mount on a local disk | Durable disk plus off-host backups and restore testing |
| Updates | Convenient for experimentation; downtime is acceptable | Schedule maintenance, review release notes, and retain a rollback image |
| Best use | Learning, prototyping, and private experiments | Webhooks, scheduled reports, and team workflows that must run unattended |
Both environments use the same n8n core product; the difference is the operational discipline around it.
Security checklist for a self-hosted instance
- Use a strong owner password and protect the encryption key outside source control.
- Expose only the reverse proxy or required service ports; keep the database and vector store on private networks.
- Terminate TLS at the proxy and redirect HTTP to HTTPS.
- Apply least-privilege scopes to Gmail, Slack, Telegram, CRM, and database credentials.
- Validate webhook signatures, schemas, and content types before processing data.
- Redact secrets and personal data from execution logs and error notifications.
- Patch the operating system, Docker components, and n8n image on a planned cadence.
- Monitor disk space, container restarts, failed executions, and certificate expiry.
Licensing and client-facing use
The free Community edition is available without a license key, but the Sustainable Use License places boundaries on how n8n can be exposed as a product or service. In particular, offering the workflow editor to clients or selling n8n itself as a hosted service can require a different arrangement. Paid Business and Enterprise self-hosted editions require a license key and provide additional licensed capabilities.

Troubleshoot common failures
The editor opens, but workflows disappear after a restart
Check that the volume mapping targets /home/node/.n8n and that the container starts with the same named volume or bind mount every time. Confirm the host disk is writable and that the Compose project has not created a new volume with a different name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWebhook requests never arrive
Verify DNS, firewall rules, proxy forwarding, TLS termination, and the configured public webhook URL. If n8n is behind a router or tunnel, confirm that the external path is forwarded to port 5678 internally. Test the sender’s retry behavior and inspect proxy logs without exposing payload secrets.
Scheduled executions run at the wrong hour
Compare the workflow timezone, GENERIC_TIMEZONE, TZ, host timezone, and daylight-saving rules. Change one setting at a time and create a test schedule with a known timestamp.
Credentials fail after moving the instance
Ensure the original encryption key is present and unchanged. Restoring the data volume without restoring that key can prevent n8n from decrypting stored credentials. If the key is lost, plan credential rotation rather than attempting to recover plaintext secrets.
A workflow loops or creates duplicates
Inspect retry settings, webhook sender retries, polling cursors, and branches that re-enter a previous node. Add an idempotency key, persist the source event ID, and place irreversible actions after validation and deduplication.
Bottom line
Start with Docker Compose, persistent storage, a protected encryption key, and a private network. Build one observable workflow—such as webhook notification or a scheduled report—before adding AI or multi-step routing. Then add retries, approvals, backups, monitoring, and TLS until the automation can survive a restart and a predictable failure. n8n’s large template directory can shorten design time, but the quality of a self-hosted workflow depends on how carefully you adapt and operate it.
