MyState Contents Standard may suit renters who want cover for listed events, but it is not automatically an all-risk policy. Accidental damage at home, electrical motor burnout and portable contents away from home are optional on Standard. Before choosing it, check the current policy wording, quote and Certificate of Insurance—especially for valuables, items you take outside and the excess that applies.
Who provides the cover?
Insurance Australia Limited (IAL) issues the insurance under the CGU brand. MyState Bank promotes and distributes it under an agreement with IAL; the bank says it does not guarantee claims. The policy’s terms are set by the insurer’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and your Certificate of Insurance. MyState’s home insurance page explains the arrangement and links to product information. [c002]

What does Contents Standard cover?
MyState’s public summary lists Contents Standard cover for events including fire, flood or rainwater run-off, theft, storm, escape of water or liquid, impact, lightning, earthquake and liability. It also lists benefits such as contents in storage, in transit or in the open air; food spoilage; identity theft; temporary accommodation; storage costs; moving to a new home; student and visitors’ belongings; removal of debris; and replacement of keys and locks. These are summary-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every loss or situation is covered. Terms, conditions, exclusions and benefit limits in the current policy wording control. Which benefits are optional—and when might they matter?
| Benefit | Contents Standard | Contents Plus | Why a renter might check it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accidental damage at home | Optional | Automatically included | Consider whether spills or accidental breakages are a meaningful risk for your household. |
| Electrical motor burnout | Optional | MyState’s summary does not establish its status for Plus | Check the wording and quote if you want this protection for appliances with motors. |
| Portable contents away from home | Optional | MyState lists portable contents as an optional or additional benefit | Relevant if you regularly take phones, laptops, cameras or other belongings outside the home. |
The table reflects MyState’s public product summary; verify the options available on your quote and the benefits actually selected on your policy. Do not assume a particular item, location or type of loss is covered away from home without checking the policy schedule and wording. MyState’s comparison table distinguishes Standard from Plus. What happens to jewellery, watches, art and collections?
MyState says works of art, collections, jewellery and watches share a $2,500 total limit under general contents. That is a combined limit across those named categories, not $2,500 for each one. MyState says customers can select the optional Valuable Contents benefit for higher cover. Check the policy wording and schedule for how an item must be declared and what limit applies to it. MyState’s valuables FAQ gives the stated limit. [c003]

Portable contents and valuable contents are not interchangeable concepts: portable cover concerns belongings taken outside the home, while Valuable Contents is the option MyState identifies for higher cover of specified valuables. Check both options if your belongings and routines make both relevant. MyState also says valuable contents are not covered while in storage. General contents in storage may be covered if CGU is notified in advance and accepts the arrangement. [c003]
How much contents cover should a renter choose?
Estimate the cost of replacing your belongings rather than choosing a sum insured based only on what feels typical. MyState advises listing household items and says its insurance calculator can estimate average-quality contents per room. Its valuation guide, updated 28 July 2022, also recommends taking photos and keeping receipts as evidence of ownership. Treat that guide as a practical inventory aid, not as current policy wording. What to compare before buying
A public summary is not enough to judge whether this policy is right for your circumstances. Compare your actual quote and policy documents against the questions below.
- Standard versus Plus: Check the price difference and whether Plus’s automatic accidental-damage cover is worth it for you.
- Portable belongings: Confirm whether portable contents is selected, which items and places it covers, and what events or limits apply.
- Valuables: Check sublimits for jewellery, watches, art, collections, electronics and other valuable belongings, and whether specified-item cover is available.
- Weather and water: Read the PDS definitions and exclusions for flood, rainwater run-off, storm and escape of water; similar labels do not establish identical cover.
- Sum insured and claims: Confirm how the policy determines settlement—for example, repair or replacement—and whether your selected amount is adequate.
- Price and excess: Compare the base premium, optional-benefit costs, applicable excesses, discounts and payment arrangements on your own quote and Certificate of Insurance.
- Temporary or transitional situations: Check eligibility rules and caps for storage, transit, moving and temporary accommodation.
What the public information does not settle
MyState’s page directs customers to the PDS for limitations and exclusions and to the Certificate of Insurance for excesses. The PDS and Home Contents Key Fact Sheet links were inaccessible when reviewed, so exact exclusions, definitions, settlement rules, benefit sublimits, premiums and excesses cannot be established from the public summary alone. Obtain the current policy pack and a renter-specific quote before deciding. MyState’s product page provides the public summary and document links. [c001] [c005]
