1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf calls you want are not ringing, check four places: unknown-caller screening, spam filters, the blocked-number list, and automatic call screening. These controls can silence a call, send it to voicemail, place it in a separate list, or block it outright. The right fix depends on your phone, software, Phone app, and sometimes carrier.
First, identify what “blocking” means
A call that does not ring is not necessarily blocked. Your phone may have screened it before ringing, silenced it to voicemail, filed it outside the main call history, or declined it because the number is on a block list. “Unknown,” “private,” “spam,” and “blocked” can refer to different caller categories and settings.

If possible, ask the caller to try again while you check your call history and filtered-call lists. The location and label of those lists vary by phone and app.

1. Check unknown-caller screening
iPhone
Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Apple lists three options: Never, Ask Reason for Calling, and Silence. Never turns off screening so calls from unsaved numbers ring; Ask Reason for Calling screens them before ringing; Silence sends them to voicemail. If you want unsaved callers to ring directly, choose Never. See Apple’s iPhone call-screening instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Google Phone on Android
Google’s Block unknown setting is narrower than its name may suggest: it blocks private or unidentified numbers, but ordinary numbers that are not saved in your contacts can still come through. Find it under Phone > More > Settings > Blocked numbers. The exact interface can depend on the Android version and Phone app; Google notes that some steps require Android 6.0 or later. Details are in Google’s number-blocking guide.
2. Review spam filters and filtered-call lists
iPhone
The Phone app’s Unknown Callers filter moves calls from unknown numbers out of Recents and into an Unknown Callers list; it does not mean every such caller was added to Blocked Contacts. Apple also describes a Spam filter that silences calls identified by the carrier as potential spam or fraud and moves them to a Spam list. Check those lists for a wanted call. If the app offers the option, mark a legitimate caller as known.

- REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
- 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
- BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
- SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
- IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.
Google Phone
Caller ID and spam protection can be enabled separately from Filter spam calls. If a legitimate number was identified as spam, look for its call entry, choose Not spam, and unblock it if prompted. Google explains the feature and its controls in its caller ID and spam protection help.
There is a privacy trade-off: Google says numbers for calls to or from people outside your contacts may be sent to Google to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. Google says it does not get phone numbers from your Contacts list.

3. Remove the caller from your blocked-number list
If one person’s calls are missing, check the block list before changing a broad screening setting. An individual number may have been blocked accidentally.
- iPhone: Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts, then unblock the number or contact.
- Google Phone: Open Phone > More > Settings > Blocked numbers, then remove the number.

4. Check automatic screening and manufacturer or carrier features
Google Call Screen
On supported Pixel phones, Call Screen can screen some calls automatically. Google says contacts are not screened and documents automatic screening in English in the United States on Pixel phones running Android 10 or later. To review it, open Phone > Settings > Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen > Call Screen > Unknown Call Settings, depending on the interface. Adjust or disable automatic screening if it is intercepting a caller you want. See Google’s Call Screen instructions.
Samsung Smart Call
Smart Call may not be available on every Galaxy model or carrier. Where it is available, its settings let you choose to block all spam and scam calls or only high-risk scam calls. Check the actual Phone app on your device rather than assuming the same option exists on every Galaxy. Samsung’s Smart Call support page describes the feature.

Choose the smallest change that fixes the problem
- If all unsaved callers are affected, review unknown-caller screening first.
- If a call is present in a spam or unknown list, correct its classification there rather than disabling every filter.
- If only one caller is affected, remove that number from the individual block list.
- If screening is happening automatically, check Call Screen or the manufacturer’s caller-protection feature.
After changing a setting, have the caller try again. If the call still does not ring, confirm which number they used and check whether a carrier service or another installed calling app is also screening calls. Menu names, feature availability, and behavior can differ by device, app version, language, region, and carrier.
