Why grep -r can search more than you expect
In GNU grep, -r means recursive search: grep processes files beneath each directory operand. If recursion is enabled and no file operand is supplied, GNU grep searches the current working directory. So a command launched at a repository root may inspect every eligible file in that tree, not just the source files you had in mind. A large tree—including generated or vendor content—can make that work substantial, but high CPU usage is not an inevitable property of grep.

The title’s 100% CPU reading is specific to the author’s reported incident. The command, working directory, repository contents, operating system, and process-monitor evidence are not available here, so there is no basis to identify one of them as the confirmed cause.

GNU grep’s lowercase -r skips symlinks it encounters while recursively walking directories, though it follows a symlink supplied directly as a command-line operand. Uppercase -R follows all symlinks. If a tree contains links to other directories, that choice can change which files are searched.

How to narrow a recursive search
Choose the search scope before running the command. A directory operand, an exclusion, or an explicit file list makes the intended scope clearer than an unrestricted search from the repository root.
Search a specific directory
Pass the directory that contains the files you want to inspect rather than relying on the current working directory. For example, a search intended for application source should target that source directory, not the repository root. Adjust the path to match your project.

Exclude directories you do not want to scan
GNU grep supports --exclude-dir=glob for excluding matching directories during recursive searches. Use patterns that match the actual directory names in your project; exclusions should be deliberate rather than assumed to cover every generated or dependency directory.

Select files explicitly when extensions define the scope
When the task is limited to a particular file type, GNU grep’s manual documents combining find with grep to select matching files before searching. This is more explicit than traversing a whole tree and filtering mentally afterward. Check the selected paths before relying on the result, especially if the project has nested directories with different content.

When git grep is a better fit
For a search of repository source, git grep can be a useful alternative because its default scope is repository-aware: it searches tracked working-tree files or the index. Pathspecs can restrict the search to particular locations. Its default is not a scan of every file on disk: untracked files require an explicit option, and ignored files require additional option handling.
That distinction matters when the task is to search generated, newly created, or ignored files. In those cases, git grep may omit files you intend to include, so choose the tool and options according to the scope—not just the command name.

What a JavaScript Git hook can—and cannot—do
A Git hook can run a check during a configured Git workflow. A JavaScript hook can make a scoped check part of that workflow, for example by checking files relevant to the change and reporting a clear failure. That is a prevention pattern, not proof of what the author’s unseen hook did or of a measured reduction in CPU use.
Design the check around the change
- Determine which files or paths need checking; avoid rescanning the entire repository when only a limited set is relevant.
- Use a clear working directory and fixed arguments for the checker so its scope is predictable.
- Explain the failure in a message that tells the developer what needs attention.
- Handle process errors and exit status so a failed checker is not mistaken for a successful one.
Invoke child processes without building a shell command from input
Node.js provides child_process.spawn(command, args, options) for launching a process asynchronously. With its default shell: false, the executable and arguments can be passed separately instead of assembled into one shell string. Node also supports a timeout and an abort signal for ending a process when appropriate. Avoid passing unsanitized input through a shell: Node warns that doing so can create command-injection risk.

Account for output as well as runtime. If a child process writes to piped output that the hook never consumes, the pipe buffer can fill and block the child. Decide deliberately whether to read, forward, or redirect the output, and make sure the hook handles the child’s completion and errors.
Why the hook is not a universal guarantee
A hook only automates checks in Git workflows where it is installed and runs. It may be absent in another environment or bypassed, so it should not be described as an unbreakable safeguard against every broad search or CPU spike. The supported claim is narrower: a configured hook can help enforce a specific, scoped check in the workflows that use it.
