A green test run is not evidence that an AI coding agent fixed a bug if its patch never landed. In an October 1, 2026 DEV Community post, developer prodbymarcu describes a runner that treated tests passing on an unchanged checkout as success. The account’s practical lesson is to verify the applied change, test that state, and review the exact diff before trusting the result.
How a rejected patch became a false success
In the author’s account, an autonomous Python agent worked through paid GitHub bug bounties on a secondhand RTX 3090 graphics card. The setup used a quantized Qwen3 27B model served locally with llama.cpp. Its runner cloned a repository, installed dependencies, ran baseline tests, then asked the model for a fix in as many as six rounds, applying each candidate and returning failures for another attempt.

The failure was in the runner’s handling of a malformed patch. The model returned invalid unified-diff hunk headers, and git apply rejected the patch as corrupt. The runner logged that rejection but continued to run tests against the untouched checkout. Because the existing tests passed, it recorded success even though the saved diff was empty. The author reports that this false-green round took 40 seconds.

Make patch application a gate, not a warning
The first check belongs between patch application and testing: did the working tree change? The author’s safeguard checks git status --porcelain after applying a candidate and skips crediting a green test if there are no changes. As the author puts it, “If the working tree is clean after "applying" a patch, the patch did not apply.”
- Apply the candidate and inspect the result. Treat a failed
git applyas a failed candidate, not as a reason to proceed to a success decision. - Confirm there is a change. Check
git status --porcelain. If it reports no changes, do not treat tests on that checkout as evidence for the proposed patch. - Run tests against the changed checkout. Record test results only after confirming the candidate actually changed the repository.
- Collect the complete candidate diff for review. If the workflow may stage changes, inspect
git diff HEADrather than relying ongit diffalone.
This is a basic integrity check, not a proof of correctness. A changed working tree can still contain an irrelevant, incomplete, or harmful patch; tests can still miss the bug. The guard prevents one specific category error: calling an unchanged checkout’s green tests a successful fix.
Review staged and unstaged changes together
The author points out a related visibility trap: after git apply --3way, changes may be staged. In that state, plain git diff can appear empty because it ordinarily shows unstaged changes. The article’s suggested collection command is git diff HEAD, which includes changes relative to the current commit whether staged or unstaged.

The point is to review the same complete change that will be tested and potentially submitted. A blank unstaged diff is not enough to conclude that nothing changed if the application path can stage files. Conversely, seeing a nonempty diff does not establish that it is appropriate: inspect the actual edits against the task.
A passing type check can hide a damaging rewrite
The post describes a separate failure mode involving patch scope. A request to fix a one-line pagination problem in a 58 KB React context file reportedly produced a 1,379-line rewrite. It typechecked, but the author says it removed token-refresh behavior and changed a PATCH endpoint to a POST at a different path.
That example illustrates why “it compiles” and “the tests pass” are not substitutes for semantic review. A large diff can alter unrelated behavior or API contracts while satisfying a narrow check. The relevant question is not simply whether the patch is syntactically acceptable, but whether its changes are limited to the intended problem and preserve surrounding behavior.

Keep scope proportional, but treat limits as heuristics
For focused bug fixes, the author describes rejecting patches above 60 changed lines. That is a safeguard from this particular workflow, not a universal threshold: some legitimate fixes require broader changes, and a small patch can still be wrong. Unexpected size is a reason to stop and inspect, not a standalone measure of correctness.
Give the model complete, bounded instructions
The author says that truncating the target file at 20,000 characters led the model to invent the missing remainder. They also describe requesting complete file contents or exact SEARCH/REPLACE blocks instead of unified diffs from this model, and checking that the search text exists before performing a replacement. These choices address the failure modes encountered in this run; they do not guarantee that generated replacements preserve behavior.

The author says the same pipeline later produced two patches under 25 lines each: one for stale pagination state, and another for an unauthenticated QR-code endpoint where an unbounded size parameter fed PNG buffer allocation. According to the post, both passed the repositories’ own type checks with no new errors. These are the author’s reported examples, not independently reproduced findings or evidence that the model is broadly reliable.

The post’s consistent recommendation is human review of every diff before shipping. A useful review asks whether the intended code changed, whether unrelated behavior or API semantics changed, whether the patch addresses the reported failure, and whether the tests cover the relevant case. The runner can verify mechanics and report checks, but the account does not present its safeguards as a replacement for that review.
A practical verification checklist
- Stop or mark the candidate failed when patch application returns an error.
- Verify that the working tree changed before interpreting a test pass as evidence about the candidate.
- When staging or three-way application is possible, collect the reviewed diff with
git diff HEAD. - Investigate unexpectedly broad rewrites, especially when the task is narrowly scoped.
- Provide complete relevant context rather than silently truncating a file the model must preserve.
- Review the actual final diff for behavior changes and API changes before submitting or shipping.
The author’s summary is apt: “The part that checks whether anything actually happened is where your nights get saved or wasted.”
