The app lets a child photograph a handwritten spelling test and, according to Hunter’s account, returns word-level spelling feedback, a legibility indication and a crop of each word. Its design pairs Amazon Textract’s word locations with Claude’s handwriting interpretation, while deliberately scoring the OCR’s literal text so that AI correction does not conceal a misspelling.
Why Hunter built Bee Hunter
Hunter describes a familiar gap between practice and recall: his children could work through spelling words with the list available, but forgot or misspelled words when asked to write them from memory. Bee Hunter was his attempt to make checking that practice easier. A parent or child photographs the handwritten test; the app processes it and presents feedback tied to individual written words.

How the app turns a photo into feedback
The architecture gives separate jobs to image storage, handwriting services and application logic. In Hunter’s account, the browser uploads the photo directly to Amazon S3 using a presigned URL. Event-driven processing then analyzes it, stores submission and result data, and lets the browser check a status endpoint until processing finishes.

| Component | Role in Hunter’s design |
|---|---|
| Amazon S3 and CloudFront | Image storage and hosting. |
| API Gateway and 14 AWS Lambda functions | Backend endpoints and processing logic; 14 is the count Hunter reports for this project in his 2026 article, not a general AWS recommendation. |
| Amazon DynamoDB | Stores submissions and results. |
| Amazon Textract | Identifies detected words and their image locations. |
| Amazon Bedrock with Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Interprets handwriting and helps label words. |
Hunter says the services cover different weaknesses. Textract can identify useful bounding boxes for cropping but may misread a handwritten word. Claude can infer what a child intended to write, but does not provide the precise image coordinates the app needs to crop that word. Bee Hunter reconciles the two outputs so it can associate a word interpretation with a location in the photo.
Matching a word to its image crop
The reconciliation cascade tries an exact match first, then hand-coded special cases, and then fuzzy matching. Hunter reports a fuzzy-similarity threshold of 0.5, lowered from 0.6. That is an implementation setting from his app, not a validated threshold for handwriting recognition generally. A lower threshold may allow more candidate pairings, but it also makes false matches a concern; the source does not provide comparative accuracy measurements.

Why the OCR reading gets scored
Claude helps identify and label a word, but the spelling score is based on Textract’s literal detected text compared with the target spelling. This separation is intentional: if the app graded Claude’s corrected interpretation, it could turn a child’s misspelling into an apparent correct answer.
Hunter says the app uses Levenshtein alignment to classify character matches, substitutions, insertions and deletions. In practical terms, the feedback can distinguish different ways a written attempt differs from the target rather than treating every mismatch as a single undifferentiated error.

What went wrong with processing—and what Hunter changed
Hunter reports a reliability incident in which Textract wrote a textract_complete stage, while the analyzer’s guard expected storing_results. The mismatch, together with status writes and retries, reportedly allowed overlapping analyzer invocations. Those concurrent calls led to Amazon Bedrock throttling errors, including ServiceUnavailableException and “Too many connections.” Hunter says users saw waits and 60-second timeouts. These are the author’s reported incident details, not independently verified service telemetry.
The reported fixes
- He changed the trigger check to match
textract_complete. - He made the completion state
complete, so that completing analysis would not trigger analysis again. - He added exponential backoff with random jitter for Bedrock retries: four retries after the initial attempt, a one-second base delay that doubles, and a random 0–2-second jitter. These are the retry settings Hunter reports for this implementation, not universal defaults.
Hunter’s diagnosis highlights an important interaction: a state-machine typo can do more than mislabel a status. If it causes work to run repeatedly or concurrently, the resulting load can overwhelm a downstream service. As he puts it, “The lesson worth keeping: the stage typo didn’t just cause wrong behavior, it manufactured concurrency, and the concurrency is what took Bedrock down.”

What remains before a wider release
Hunter identifies several pieces of work he would do before opening Bee Hunter to strangers. He presents these as proposed improvements, not features he says are already in place:

- Retry and failure handling for stream processing: isolate and recover from failures in the event-processing path rather than allowing them to compound.
- Infrastructure as code for stream mappings and retry settings: make operational configuration reproducible and easier to manage alongside the application.
That distinction matters when reading the project as an engineering example: the article describes a working personal app and a response to a specific incident, while also naming reliability safeguards Hunter still considers necessary for a broader audience.

What Bee Hunter’s design illustrates
The project’s central trade-off is not simply which AI service reads handwriting best. Word interpretation and coordinate precision are separate needs, and the app combines services to address them. It then draws a further boundary between using a model to help identify a word and using literal OCR text to judge spelling.
- Recognition versus localization: the system needs a plausible word reading and a reliable location in the image to show a crop.
- Helpful interpretation versus faithful grading: a correction that improves a transcription can be harmful if it masks the spelling error being assessed.
- Retries versus duplicate work: backoff can ease throttling, but correct event guards and idempotent processing matter to prevent unnecessary concurrent calls.
