PCWorld contributor Chris Hoffman makes this case in a first-person roundup published September 16, 2026, in which he describes ten accessories that changed how his fast PC felt to use, not how it benchmarked. Comfort, workflow, and display quality usually return more than another hardware upgrade, and they apply equally to a high-end gaming desktop, a mini PC, or a docked laptop. Input: the mouse, keyboard, and mousepad
These three affect your hands for hours, so they deliver the most noticeable change for the least risk. None of them is a universal fit, which is why the article warns against buying a single “best” mouse without trying shapes.

Mouse
Hoffman’s advice is that grip style, size, design, and button placement determine comfort, so the Razer Cobra Pro is an example of a shape, not a recommendation for every hand. If you can, hold a few mice in a store before ordering. If you cannot, check the return policy first.
Keyboard
The article highlights tactile switches and customization on the Keychron Q3 Max. Its main practical point is the tenkeyless layout, which drops the number pad. That suits people who rarely type numbers and want the mouse closer to the keyboard. If you do use a number pad for spreadsheets or accounting, a tenkeyless board will feel like a loss.
Mousepad
The SteelSeries QcK Medium is a cloth surface. Hoffman says he used one for eight years before replacing it. That is one person’s experience, not evidence of how long any pad lasts, so treat the lifespan as anecdotal.

Workflow: a separate macro keypad
The Elgato Stream Deck Neo is the article’s central pick. Its keys can launch apps, trigger actions, automate tasks, and run shortcuts. Hoffman places it beside a tenkeyless keyboard that lacks extra macro keys, which is the case where a separate keypad adds the most. Hoffman writes: “For me, the Stream Deck Neo is an essential accessory that speeds up my workflow.” That is his personal assessment.
Before buying, decide which tasks you would actually assign to keys. A keypad only saves time if you have repetitive actions, such as switching audio devices, opening a project folder, or running a recurring command. Without a short list of those, the keys sit unused.
Display: when a new monitor is worth it
The MSI MPG 272URX QD-OLED is the article’s example of a 4K OLED monitor with HDR and a high refresh rate. Hoffman notes that someone can keep an existing monitor if it meets their needs, and that is the right starting test. Upgrade the screen when the current one is limiting you in a specific way, such as low resolution for the sharpness you want, weak HDR, or a refresh rate that does not match your games or work.

Before you buy, confirm that the monitor’s inputs match your graphics card’s output ports and that your PC can drive the resolution and refresh rate you want. A monitor that is faster than your connection or graphics output will not deliver the upgrade on paper.
Sound: speakers, headphones, and microphones

Headphones
For readers who are not audiophiles, Hoffman’s advice is to prioritize comfort over sound quality. The Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X is the example. He also says a gaming headset is unnecessary if you do not need an integrated microphone or wireless audio. An under-desk hook keeps headphones off the desk when you are not wearing them.
Microphone

Hoffman describes waking his desktop and signing in with Windows Hello through an infrared camera, and he also points to the 4K sensor for meetings and recorded video. Those are his observations. Windows Hello face sign-in requires an infrared camera that Windows supports, so confirm that your PC and this webcam both meet that requirement before you assume it will work. The article’s specifications and compatibility were not independently verified.

Controller
The Microsoft Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is the article’s gamepad. Modern Xbox controllers connect over Bluetooth or USB-C, while older models rely on a receiver dongle. Check which model you are buying and whether your PC supports that connection method.
