A Gemini API 500 is an unexpected server-side error, and Google says retrying is appropriate. The safer recovery is usually to retry the failed request or workflow activity—not blindly replay every step that already succeeded. That distinction helps prevent wasted work and, where steps have side effects, accidental duplicates.
What a Gemini API 500 means—and what it does not
Google’s current error reference labels api_error as 500 Internal Server Error: an unexpected server error for which retrying is recommended. If it persists, Google says to contact support. A 500 identifies the error class; by itself, it does not explain the cause of a particular request failure.

Google’s legacy Generate Content API error reference calls a 500 INTERNAL. It suggests checking the service status page, reducing input context, temporarily trying another model, waiting before retrying, and reporting persistent errors through AI Studio. These are diagnostic options, not proof that a long prompt or a specific model caused the error.

The HTTP status helps determine whether another attempt is sensible. Google recommends backoff for 429 rate-limit errors and 503 service unavailability. By contrast, 400 generally points to malformed input or parameters; 401 to an invalid, missing, or expired key; 402 to depleted Prepay credits; and 403 to insufficient permission. Google’s troubleshooting guide advises against retrying client errors such as 400, 402, and 403 without first correcting the underlying issue.

| Status | Typical meaning in Google’s reference | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Malformed input or parameters | Correct the request; do not retry unchanged. |
| 401 | Invalid, missing, or expired API key | Check the key and authentication configuration. |
| 402 | Prepay credits depleted | Resolve the account or billing issue before retrying. |
| 403 | Insufficient permission | Check access and permissions before retrying. |
| 429 | Rate limit exceeded | Wait and retry with exponential backoff. |
| 500 | Unexpected internal server error | Retry in a bounded way; escalate if it persists. |
| 503 | Service unavailable | Wait and retry with exponential backoff. |

Retry the failed work, not the completed workflow
In a multi-step process, a server error at a later step does not automatically mean earlier successful work needs to run again. For example, if a workflow has already validated input and saved an intermediate result, it can retain that result and retry only the failed Gemini call—provided the workflow can safely resume from that point.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Google’s Temporal example for durable Gemini workflows puts retry behavior on an activity and classifies 408, 429, and 5xx errors as retryable. Other errors, such as a malformed-request 400, are non-retryable by default. The useful design principle is to give recovery responsibility to the smallest unit that can be retried safely, while preserving completed outputs when your workflow permits it.

Re-running an activity can repeat more than an API request if that activity also writes to a database, sends a message, charges an account, or triggers another service. Before enabling retries, determine which operations have side effects and whether repeating them is safe. Persisted results can help a workflow resume without redoing completed steps, but there is no universal idempotency recipe for every application: the safeguards depend on what the activity does.

Use bounded backoff and avoid duplicate retry layers
Google recommends exponential backoff: wait briefly before the first retry, then increase the delay between subsequent attempts. Add jitter so many clients do not retry in sync, and set a maximum attempt count so a transient failure cannot create an infinite loop. Google summarizes the approach this way: “If you receive an error indicating that you should retry your request (such as a 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED or 503 UNAVAILABLE), we recommend implementing an exponential backoff strategy.”
Google’s troubleshooting guide says its official Gemini API SDKs include automatic exponential-backoff retries for transient timeouts, network errors, and 429/5xx responses. The guide’s Python example describes up to four retries, with an initial delay of approximately one second and a maximum delay of 60 seconds. Those figures describe the documented Python SDK behavior, not a guarantee that every SDK language or version uses identical settings. Check the installed SDK version and configuration before adding another retry layer: if both the SDK and workflow retry the same request, total attempts can multiply.
Choose one clear retry owner
| Retry owner | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| SDK | The SDK’s built-in transient-error handling is sufficient for a single request. | Confirm the installed language, version, and retry configuration; do not assume all SDKs share the Python example’s settings. |
| Application code | Your app needs a request-level policy or must coordinate retries with other work. | Retry only transient failures, use backoff and jitter, and enforce an attempt or time limit. |
| Workflow activity | A multi-step or durable workflow must resume a failed step while retaining completed results. | Classify retryable errors and check whether repeating the activity can duplicate side effects. |
This is a design comparison, not a claim that one owner is best for every system. Avoid stacking independent policies without calculating their combined attempt limits and understanding which layer repeats the operation.

What to do when 500 errors keep happening
- Inspect the response and logs. Confirm that the failure is a 500 rather than a client error or a different transient status, and identify which workflow activity failed.
- Retry that operation within limits. Use exponential backoff with jitter and a maximum attempt count; preserve prior successful outputs when safe.
- Check for overlapping retries. Review SDK settings and application or workflow policies so retries do not multiply unexpectedly.
- Use Google’s diagnostic options. Check the service status page, try a smaller input context or another model as a diagnostic, and wait before another attempt. These steps can help investigate a persistent failure but do not establish its cause.
- Escalate persistent failures. If the error continues, follow Google’s guidance to report it through AI Studio or contact support, with the relevant request details and timestamps from your logs.
