The cause was timing, not a broken key. The R prompt appeared while the incoming bullet was still too far away. By the time the bullet arrived, the reflect effect the key was supposed to trigger had already expired, and a cooldown blocked an immediate retry. A bot that pressed real keys in the actual game exposed the mismatch, which the author’s own playtesting had missed.
What the player saw
The case comes from Void Parry, a browser game in which the player reflects enemy bullets back at a boss. Its first fight opens with a tutorial. When a slow white bullet approaches, the game shows an R keycap prompt, switches on bullet time, and pulses a ring around the player. The lesson is complete when the player reflects the bullet.

In the author’s account, a new player who pressed R as soon as the prompt appeared often failed to finish the lesson. The lesson then ran into its 25-second timeout. From the player’s side, the instruction and the response did not match, and nothing in the screen explained why.

The author reports four values from the build being tested. Converting the two time-based values to real time uses the bullet-time scale of 0.35 that the author describes, so the real-time figures below are approximate derivations from those reported numbers rather than separate measurements.

The sequence that follows from those numbers is the core of the bug:
- The prompt appears with the bullet 115 px away. Roughly 76 px of travel remain before the bullet reaches the reflect zone.
- At about 52.5 px/s, those 76 px take about 1.5 seconds of real time.
- The reflect bubble lasts only about 0.8 seconds of real time in bullet time. It expires roughly 0.7 seconds before the bullet arrives.
- A player who presses R at the prompt activates a bubble that is already gone when the bullet reaches it.
- A second press is blocked by the cooldown, which lasts about 2.6 seconds of real time. Retrying immediately therefore fails too, so the player concludes the key is broken.
The core issue is that the prompt was tied to the bullet’s appearance, not to the moment the bullet would actually meet the reflect zone. Slowing the world also slowed the game-time timers in this implementation, so the bubble and cooldown stretched in real time, but the bubble still did not last long enough to cover the approach.
The fix the author reported
The author changed the values for the lesson only. The reflect duration was multiplied by three, and the cooldown was set to 0.25 seconds. With the duration at 0.84 seconds of game time, the bubble lasts about 2.4 seconds of real time in bullet time, comfortably longer than the 1.5-second approach. In the author’s account, a press at the prompt then caught the bullet, and the lesson ended 3 to 5 seconds into the game instead of timing out.

Two points about this change are worth keeping in mind. The change was scoped to the tutorial, so the regular fight’s values were not altered by this fix. The write-up also does not state whether the 0.25-second cooldown is game time or real time, so its real-time length should be treated as uncertain.
How the bot test found the mismatch
The author’s own playtesting had not surfaced the problem, so the author wrote an automated test that played the real game rather than calling its internal functions. Its key properties were:
- It ran in headless Chrome, driven by Playwright.
- It sent keyboard presses, the same input a player uses.
- It started with a fresh player and empty local storage, so no earlier progress carried over.
- It asserted that the tutorial lesson ended before 20 seconds.
- It asserted that fight one was won within 35 to 150 seconds.
- It asserted that at least eight bullets were on screen after the lesson.
Using keypresses matters here. A test that calls the reflect function directly would have skipped the prompt, the timing window, and the cooldown, which are exactly the parts that failed.

What the same test revealed about difficulty
The test exposed a second problem. The scripted player, which the author describes as clumsy, died four times in fight one. That result meant the fight was harder than the author intended, and the author tuned fight one using the test’s numbers rather than relying on how the fight felt during play. The write-up does not say what the final values were, so no specific tuning figures should be assumed.

Lessons for tutorial designers
The author’s own summary of the failure is direct: “A new player learns exactly the wrong lesson here: ‘the button doesn’t work.'” The practical takeaways from the case apply beyond this one game:
- Test the tutorial at the moment the prompt appears, and check the time from prompt to impact.
- Compare four quantities together: projectile travel time, effect duration, cooldown, and prompt timing under the same slow-motion rules.
- Review every game-time timer when the world is slowed, since a value that looks safe at normal speed may be stretched or cut short in the slowed state.
- Make the prompt wait for the window in which the action actually works, or make the window long enough to cover the approach.
- Automate at least one end-to-end run that uses real inputs from a fresh save, since manual playtesting by the designer can miss timing mismatches a new player will hit.
What this account does and does not establish
The case is a single developer’s report about one browser game. The numbers belong to that build and are not general game-development statistics. The write-up is the author’s own account published on DEV Community by Nightdrive Labs, and it has not been independently replicated in a published test. The reported fix is also specific to the tutorial and should not be read as a general rule for bullet timing. For the reader trying to diagnose a similar prompt, the value of the case is the method: measure the distance, the speed, the effect length, and the cooldown, then check whether they line up.
